Holy shi*t

He’s my favorite coach, and it was a treat to see him in person the other night. Damn. Best wishes I guess, though I’m wondering what the hell is going on.

I’m shocked by this, but I wouldn’t want him here. My feeling is that you’d have to have players with the right personality to work with him, otherwise he’ll rub people the wrong way. And I can just imagine what Tyreke and DMC would be like having to work with him.

by Bitgod on Feb 10, 2011 1:29 PM PST reply actions

This is a sad day for the NBA

Jerry Sloan represents stability, hard work and grit. He has lived his last 23 years as the representative of the Jazz – through hard times as a team and the personal tragedy of losing his wife to cancer.

For him to sign a contract extension for one year earlier this week and then announce he is to retire today is confusing. There must be more to this story, because of all the things that one can say about Jerry Sloan top on the list is that he is not a quitter. I am shocked by this announcement because it is a surprising way for that cowboy to ride into the sunset.

Jerry Sloan deserves the best wishes for happiness from the NBA and it’s fans for providing so much to the League and we fans for so long.

Lastly, I don’t believe Jerry Sloan will ever coach elsewhere. Coaches don’t get their suit coats retired but if they did, his name should be hanging in the rafters in Salt Lake City.

Much respect to the dude, but I don't know if I'd want him in Sacramento...

Great coach, but I’m not sure if he has the right style and personality to effectively click with our current roster and organization. His reputation for being a staunch hard-ass is pretty well established – not necessarily a bad thing, but it would be a pretty big change.

by jeremy548 on Feb 10, 2011 1:43 PM PST reply actions

If anything, it went something like this last night after the game:

Mgmt. - “Jerry, ease up on Deron, ok.”
Jerry – “F. U., I’m quitting”
Mgmt. – “Hold on, I didn’t mean…..”
Jerry – “F.U., I’ve been wanting to retire for a while.”

I don't buy that at all

by kwill on Feb 10, 2011 2:55 PM PST up reply actions

that doesn't explain why he would quit mid season

and quite frankly, rumors about players thinking there is going to be a fist fight between Deron and Sloan don’t come out of thin air. Shit happened and given the insane amount of years Sloan has been there, given the long time owner died recently, and given the 6 plus years Deron has been there, maybe there were a lot of things that contributed to Sloan saying he’s done but I wouldn’t start ignorning obvious signs of trouble brewing and teammates being scared there is going to be a fist fight between the coach and a player might be one of those signs.

I am often wrong, but never in doubt.

by wallywagon11 on Feb 10, 2011 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I don't see that

That’s something that’s so out of character for him, it doesn’t make any sense. And why would Phil go as well?

As long as we’re making guesses, I don’t think he wanted to quit, but ownership probably dictated he change his style and go easier on the team.

Apparently Sloan told Williams to run one play, and he ran another.

And they got in a fight at halftime during the game yesterday, and the other players thought they’d actually start physically fighting each other.

I think he would be great with the Kings. This team needs

discipline, especially on offense. Sadly, I doubt he would want to take a job here. There have been discipline problems with players and the head coaches haven’t been shown a lot of loyalty.

I think it is tragic that he had to resign. They will miss him like we miss Adelman.

Yeah, this is probably one of the last places he would want to be,

and that assumes he still wants to coach. Still, all I can think about is how sad it is that one player can oust a long time coach, if that is in fact the case.

by fryingpan136 on Feb 10, 2011 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

Sad day

But all good things come to an end. The Jazz really don’t have the horses nor the identity without Boozer and Okur and some of the tough guys they had like Harpring and Brewer, but I am sure their GM thinks they have the best talent in the league.

On Sloan coaching the Kings, I doubt he’d be interested in the least, and he’s a bit too old. I’d rather see our next coach be at least a decade younger than Westphal, not a decade older.

Seems like owner, GM, Williams all saying they didn't push him out

and in fact begged him to stay.

I think Sloan is done. He no doubt has the chops to coach another team, but I think he’s probably tired of the NBA grind. Seems reasonable.

I wonder what happens to Phil Johnson? Sounds like he was a good soldier.

"His D was a difference at the end."

by NewEraKings on Feb 11, 2011 5:36 AM PST reply actions

The consensus now seems to be...

that he told O’Connor it was him or Deron Williams. O’Connor sided with Williams, and Sloan left. Johnson leaving with him is a sign, in my eyes at least, that he will coach again. He wants things to be done his way and he won’t change his mind about that. Part of it is that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but part of it is that he wins. And I know he’s never won a title, but I think that says less about him and more about the team’s that have been around in his time.

One could argue the feat of staying consistently good is more impressive than winning a title.

Certainly

He’s missed the playoffs only 3 times as Jazz head coach. He’s only had one losing season where they went 26-56 in 2004-05. His worst season other than that was the following year when they were .500. The fact that he hasn’t won a title may be nothing more than sheer dumb luck

The fact that he hasn't won a title

Has a lot to do with the Bulls and Lakers. I think his best (championship) caliber teams unfortunately competed during the period of time those teams were elite.

Yep

Only one team can win it all and during his coaching tenure there have been the Showtime Lakers, Jordan’s Bulls, Hakeem’s Rockets, Shaq and Kobe’s Lakers, and the Spurs dynasty.

by vfettke on Feb 11, 2011 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

One point about Sloan in all this that might be missed:

The Jazz weren’t missing the playoffs before Sloan took over either. They were in the playoffs from 1984-2003. So not all of those playoff appearances were Sloan’s. And, all of those included Stockton & Malone from Sloan’s end too.

Again, it’s not to diminish Sloan’s accomplishments or anything, but the reality is that Sloan took over a team that had won games and made the playoffs for a number of years prior. He simply continued that tradition, found ways to keep the team consistently competitive, and, in my opinion anyway, kept the Jazz talent level similar as the overall NBA talent level dropped. That’s when the Jazz made the NBA finals.

As great as Jerry Sloan was, I think Woj made a great point about Sloan: The world around him changed.

So i've been following the SBnation Jazz Blog faithful

and the general consensus is that Sloan simply felt too old to handle arguing with his players, and decided to hang up the boots.

The consensus is also that DWill shouldn’t take blame for it but will probably become the scapegoat anyway because of mass media spin.

Yeah

The media, and Twitter especially, might have had a lot to do with D-Will taking a big hit. First it was “Deron Williams wanted Sloan gone, or he was gone.” Then it switched and became “Sloan says its him or me.” But the damage was already done. People jumped on Deron pretty quickly.
