The new CBA is coming up and every time the sides get together I like to bring up my opinion on what I'd do if I had total control over the CBA process. Mind you I know this has 0% chance of ever happening but just for fun....
I think every teams salary should be the same and divided into 15 "slots" with the first being the highest salary and the 12 being the lowest. Every year players would be ranked by the teams management into the slots, so players would no longer have guaranteed contracts. Teams would all have the same team salary and there would be no more free agency. A team owns a players rights unless the rights are traded. Trades would no longer have to match salaries. The only players that would be free agents are players who are waived by their team.
What this would do is create team building through the draft and not free agency. It would take away teams making trades for salary purposes too (which as a Kings fan the last few years I hate!). It would keep teams together for longer and also create stronger continuity with the teams and the fans (No more Lebron leaving a team for big money). It would create a more level playing field in terms of teams not exceeding a luxury tax to collect a ton of talent. It would also erase the notion of a player only playing in a contract year. I like the idea of the players having to perform every year to earn their rank in salary structure. It makes it much more like the NFL.
Of course the drawbacks are that it would most likely take a lot longer to turn around a team if it is built through a draft. The players union would hate everything about this idea. But I think this plan would definitely appeal to fans and make NBA basketball easier and more fun to follow. Small market teams would not be at risk loosing their best players, and that alone I think would make fans of teams grow (think about having Tyreke and Cousins leave just as they were becoming all-stars to sign with the Lakers or New York, that would suck!).
So any that is my CBA dream scheme. Anyone else have fun thoughts on the matter?
