One of the guys I work with was watching the bond measure to raise money in Anaheim for the new Kings stadium. A woman official joked, “We’ve finally found a way to deal with those cow bells.” My coworker is an avid Kings fan, and was moved to the point of writing a letter. He said, very politely, that while it’s good for the city of Anaheim that they are gaining a new sports franchise, there are a lot of people here in Sacramento that are kind of hurt by all this. The Kings were a point of civic pride, and while it appears they must go, virtually no one is happy about it. He’s happy for Anaheim, the tone of her comment was unnecessarily hurtful, considering what Kings fans are already going through.
She wrote back, apologizing profusely. And promising a court side ticket to opening night at Honda (I think) Arena.
The moral: Complaining to politicians gets you free stuff sometimes.
