Is Dally/Cousins the future at the 5 position?

Few teams have as deep a big man rotation as the kings do: dally, cousins, and JT off the bench. However, there are also some question marks. Perhaps marcus and tyreke can develop a curry/ellis-like chemistry or perhaps not, but if tyreke needs to be dealt down the line, I think it should be for a pf like lamar odom (ie a dude that could start, but also strengthens your bench). The number one guy I'd want to trade tyreke for is paul millsap. Dally/cousins could start against bigger teams, while cousins/millsap would be equally formidable.

Which position on the team do you think is the strongest, and who would you like to  see the kings go after in the offseason?

I feel like an idiot for not thinking it was going to be a trade Reke post

just because the title is " Dally/Cousins the future at the 5 position? ".
.

In my quest to set the family record and live to 103, I am beginning to get pissed at the amount of body parts falling off along the way.

Between Dalembert and JT,

one of them stays as a bench big abd the other has to go, replaced by a guy that is better (today) than Cousins – think Nene or Josh Smith, for example.

dalembert

will cost a lot of money and magoofs will not pay him.also we need to re-sign thorton a nother big money contract.let dally walk and sign thorton and draft derrick willams.

Thornton is a restricted free agent.

So, we’ll get a chance to match -or offer him an extension before then, which won’t happen due to the CBA.

Can't offer Thornton an extension anyway.

So the point is rather moot.

Yuck

Nene’s career high in rebounding is worse than Demarcus Cousins rookie year. Nene is more efficient, but that won’t last more than another year or two. Nene has always been highly overrated. Please, not him.

Are you serious?

I’m not convinced that he’s the best fit here, but really?

Why do we even think

Dally is staying? I mean his contract is up and wait a minute if only their was a team who could use a big Center to play defense and rebound the basketball as well as score a few points for them….AND are in the playoffs….Oh wait their is a team like that…..Next Season Dally is taking HIS talents to South Beach….(i hope he doesn’t but i would)

And if we can land Kyle Irving i think we should trade Reke….Irving/Thornton + DMC is great! But i see us getting one of the Jones which means we will keep Reke

by shadowchicken on Apr 3, 2011 12:47 AM PDT reply actions

As long as money means nothing to him

Which it might. But my guess is he can make a lot more than they can pay him and isn’t quite ready to do the Bibby thing just yet.

Yeah

Dally is still in his prime, if on the downside (will be 30 next year, but that’s the same age we signed Vlade at), and stands to make a lot more money in his career, money that he could use to help his countrymen.

Miami wouldn’t be able to offer him anything more than the MLE, if that even exists after the new CBA.

money that he could use to help his countrymen.

Yep. I think that’s exactly what drives this guy. I just don’t see him being in the MLE to get a ring stage of his career yet.

Trade Tyreke for Millsap?

That won’t fly.

I voted other....Enes Kanter via draft

I don’t think Dally has a future with this team…he’ll go to one of the teams in Florida.
If Kyrie and Perry are off the board, I would like the Kings to get Enes Kanter.

by getPGwithbounce on Apr 3, 2011 12:24 PM PDT reply actions

I like Dalembert for the defense he brings.

The way he has shut down or slowed down some of the better post players has been awesome. He also works extremely well with DMC.

If he leaves however, we definetly need another big. Millsap would be awesome, and I have to say Derrick Williams looked awesome in the tournament. He could be a great pickup and his skillset seems like it would matchup well with Cousins.

Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

I like Perry Jones as a compliment to Daly/Cuz/JT.

He’s athletic, can be more efficient than his end of the season TS% at Baylor indicates, and can handle the ball. He can do a lot of little things that none of the aforementioned 3 really can.

I'm not a big Perry Jones fan

But given our position in the draft, I don’t really see anyone that we should take ahead of him. I’d rather have Barnes, Irving, Valanciunas, or even Kanter, but I think there’s a good chance that all of them are gone by the 6th pick. If that’s the case, I have no problem gambling on Jones’ potential.

Having said that, we need a 3 more than we need a 4 IMO. I think Dally and Cousins play their best together, and Tyreke and Thornton have shown that they can develop some chemistry. I think a good defending 3 with a solid outside shot would be ideal, which is right where Barnes comes into play. And that’s also the appeal of Jones. I think he has the potential to become a solid 3/4 combo guy.

Here is my reasoning:

Valanciunas: I really like his length, energy, and athleticism. I think it will take some time for him to develop, but with Dalembert on board I don’t think time is really an issue. Once he puts it all together, I think he’ll be a perfect compliment to Cousins as an energetic, athletic, rebounding machine with a competent offensive game who can gurad 4’s or 5’s, essentially an upgraded Sammy. Not a perfect fit, but in a weak draft I’ll take it.

Irving: I think the guy is the second coming of Chris Paul. Love his game.

Kanter: Having only watched his game on youtube clips, my scouting is relatively limited on him, but so is everybody’s. Watching him, he reminds me a lot of our very own Demarcus Cousins. I think he’ll be a better rebounder with inferior passing skills, but more of an inside post game focus than Cousins. Might be a bit redundant at times, but I really wouldn’t mind having a Cousins with his head on straight and the regular Demarcus playing side-by-side.

Barnes: He’s my personal preference because I think he really put it together by the end of the season. He has always been a good defender and rebounder for his position, and he plays very well off the ball. He’s a good spot-up shooter with the ability to make plays on offense, and he’s very clutch. Throw in his maturity and very good intangibles, and I think he makes for a perfect fit with this team, and this team is a perfect fit for him. He won’t be required to carry the load in the way that he would with other lottery teams, and with Tyreke and Demarcus blossoming into stars we don’t need Barnes to step right in and be “The Man”. He can develop at his own pace, which I believe will eventually make him an all-star anyways, and just be relied upon to be a very good role player.

Perry Jones: I go back and forth with him because he is oozing with talent, but I struggle to like players that don’t have an elite NBA skill, and Jones does not. He never dominated at the college level, and while he has size, he doesn’t really use it. Good rebounder, but zero post game and average defender. He has good handles, excellent considering his size, but they’re still not NBA caliber handles and in the NBA people don’t give you a pass just because you’re a decent dribbler and you’re big. Having watched quite a bit of him, I think he’s a hard worker, but he doesn’t know how to put his imprint on the game. Because he’s not great at anything, he tends to just be ok at everything and be satisfied with that. He reminds me a lot of a better version of Anthony Randolf or Donte Greene, blessed with incredible size and athleticism and a desire to use it, but no real clue how. I think he’ll be ok in the NBA, and he certainly has the raw talent to be great, but he reeks of mediocre role player. If there is no one else, I don’t mind if we take the gamble, but the guys above are higher on my preference list.

In the Valanciunas paragraph I meant "good fit" wit Cousins, not "perfect fit"

That’s what happens when I write and watch tv at the same time. I suck at multi-tasking.

You said

Kanter will be a better rebounder than Cousins?

I don’t watch any college game, let alone European, but IMO, Cousins can be a top 5 rebounder in a year or two.

He's off to a good start

But he’ll need to be more physically fit and stronger to get to Sammy D status (and Sammy has been an elite rebounder last couple years.)

It wasn't meant as a knock on Cousins as much as it was praise for Kanter.

Though I certainly believe that Cousins can rebound when he decides he wants to. Besides, didn’t I compare Kanter to Cousins with his head on straight anyways? Why wouldn’t a version of Cousins with more focus be a better rebounder than normal Cousins? If you look up the USA vs. International game when Kanter played against fellow draft prospects, he destroyed guys like Sullinger and Patric Young, pretty decent rebounders themselves.

What does Jones do well?

If he’s going to be playing basketball at the highest professional level, what does he bring to the table that is a professional level skill? And don’t say size and athleticism, you could have said the same thing about Thabeet, and even he has shot-blocking skills.

Everything Jones does is average, which points to him becoming a relatively average player. Barnes has several professional skills in his defense, shooting, and intangibles, and has proven to be a clutch performer and a winner. Jones had little to no impact on games at the college level in the wins and losses column.

I'd hope we can re-sign Dally & give JT an extension

Hopefully Dally would accept a front-loaded 3yr/$15m deal and Kings will give JT a Nick Collison type of extension. If Barnes, Kyrie & Williams are gone Terrence Jones should be our selection. Jones is a versatile player that I think would fit pretty good. I wouldn’t mind bringing in Josh Matthews for a couple million. I’d be happy with a rotation of DMC, Sammy, JT, Matthews and sometimes Jones at the PF & Center positions.

If it's anyone, let it *not* be Bargnani.

This may be biased, but I think JT brings more to the table than Bargs.

Bargs is Raef LaFrentz redux, maybe a little more assertive. But still, 6 rebounds a game from a center that plays 35 minutes is pretty terrible and intolerable for a team that wants to win more than 30 games a season. If JT played 35 minutes a night, he could do 15 and 9 at this point. I don’t know if the team would win if he was anything above the 4th option, but JT can produce.
