Speaking on Los Angeles radio, a minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers confirmed the team's lead owner, Jerry Buss, has been actively opposing a Kings' move.

"Dr. Buss has led the charge on this," said Tim Lieweke, president of AEG, the company that runs the Staples Center arena in Los Angeles. "We are on the same page as doc."

So, we all knew...

…that Buss was lobbying against the Kings’ relocation, but “leading the charge?” This speaks to his massive influence behind the scenes with the BoG, I would think.

Well, that's coming from a Lakers minority owner.

Maybe he only means to say that Buss is leading the charge on behalf of all other Lakers owners.

But, yes, I do still think Buss wields considerable influence.

Leiweke is more than just a "minority owner"

“Tim Leiweke and Tim Romani solidified their 13-year relationship in sports facility development by forming a new company called ICON Venue Group, a joint venture between Anschutz Entertainment Group and Romani Group.”

I wonder who is lighting a fire under ICON Venue for the city of Sacramento?

by sqrebck on Apr 22, 2011 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand that Leiweke has his fingers in a lot of pies.

I’m just trying to figure out the extent to which Buss is influencing other members of the BoG. This article confirms that Buss is the most influential figure associated with the Lakers—since Leiweke is “on [his] page”—but that’s nothing we didn’t already know.

IMO – The Kings will be in Sacramento next year. The Deal is terrible.

That Lakers' minority owner cofounded ICON?

The Lakers are building a new arena in Sacramento?
The Lakers are our savior?

My mind has been blown.

True

But this certainly doesn’t hurt us. It really just confirms what we had been assuming anyway.

by Gabraham on Apr 22, 2011 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with this too.

It doesn’t hurt the fight to keep the Kings in Sac.

It certainly doesn't hurt us

To keep working to expose how utterly stupid it would be for the team to move to Anaheim. Sure it’s for his own interest, but it doesn’t hurt our cause either.

by jveezy on Apr 22, 2011 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It's one thing for a city to vehemently oppose losing its own team

But having opponents from different regions opposing it for completely different reasons is extremely helpful. You never know what reason is going to resonate with each decision maker.

If Buss’ concern gives the big-market owners concern… if the letter from the mayor’s office motivates politicians to look at the laws closer… if an Anaheim citizens group opposing the bonds spreads some local concern… etc, it becomes a much wider net to capture attention and opposition.

Let them help! Here we stay!

Buss isn't concerned with the Kings

He’d be just as concerned about ANY team moving into that market. The opposition from him is certainly helping us get that additional one year to get our own complex built, but his ongoing issue is going to be continuing to fight other potential relocations to Anahem.

throught a high fee and the perception that the LA market has no room for a 3rd team. That has to suck for the Maloofs if they want to try it another time.

Stern already said

That Buss has no influence on him (stern) what so ever. However, this falls into the category of “any news that doesn’t hurt the kings” is good news regarding this whole situation. And Buss does have influence on many others either way. I’ll take it.

by Marcus Newton on Apr 22, 2011 12:06 PM PDT reply actions

Buss does has influence of course

but Stern can still rationalize with a ‘not in the best interests of the league’.

He may not have influence over Stern

At least publicly… but Buss does have influence over his fellow owners (whom have the final say) and he controls what ultimately will be the cost of infringing on his territory. So for now among others, In BUSS WE TRUST! (along with KJ, Burkle, Sac business leaders and that guy running the petition drive in Anaheim).

I wonder if the revenue sharing / CBA negotiations

will now include making that 75 mile ‘rule’ a lot firmer.

I’d think so.

I think it has to...

I think it has to provide protection for the territory of big market teams or they have no incentive to sign onto the plan. Otherwise they get hit more than once. Hit by profit sharing AND by losing market share to teams moving into their area.

I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...

by MustangMBS on Apr 22, 2011 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I would agree

I would think that recent buyers in the down market who still paid a ton for teams (Warriors & Nets) bought in under the belief that the NBA would be going in a certain direction. Considering the owners are so concerned about retaining value in their franchises and also retraining value in each other’s franchise as well I really would not be shocked if Stern ends up leading them all down the path of some form of revenue sharing and stricter market borders. I really do believe that will happen.

The reality is if our new arena plans do not come to fruition by March 2012, it appears the opposition to a move to Anaheim could be fierce next year regardless of what happens.

Shit, Jarry Buss should contribute to our new area in Sac – he will still come out ahead with the cable money he will save!!

I will be curious to see what stops Anaheim (read: Samueli) will try during the site visit next week…

“And as a result, if the team does come back or stay in Sacramento for another year, it will not only be much better off financially, but it will also give us the time to deliver a deal on a regional basis for a new arena.”

Interesting that he says “come back” (to Sacramento) before correcting himself – as if the Kings were already out the door in his mind before the recent turn of events.
