Sacramento Businesses Put Deposit Down For Kings

Photo

As you no doubt have heard by now, 30+ Sacramento businesses have backed up their pledges of $10 million with actual deposits today.  This is a big step forward to keeping the Kings in Sacramento.

As such I think its only right that we honor said businesses with our patronage, and we let them know how thankful we are for stepping up to the plate.  After the jump (and also on the sidebar), a list of the companies who put a deposit down today.  Feel free to write letters or send e-mails thanking them as well.  We're all in this together.  Here We Stay.

not to be donny downer

but what exactly does $10M get you these days? I doubt that’s enough for the building permit – it certainly doesn’t get as far as pouring footings for the new home.

This list looks suspiciously like all the usual suspects in terms of Sacramento financial power, plus a few like AT&T and Wells Fargo that almost certainly won’t be ponying up too much more than already bid, when push comes to shove. And really, which of say, Sleep Train and Golden One is going to really up the ante to get naming rights?

From the pure financial perspective, I’m really just not seeing what this means, other than (marginally) good PR for the above listed companies, especially with a particularly belligerent ownership.

Nick Swisher is handsome.

by edm7 on Apr 28, 2011 12:01 AM PDT up reply actions

the article is fairly vague.
Johnson said, Sacramento businesses “made a down payment on the Sacramento Kings and this being their permanent home.”

Is the implication anything other than to build an arena or purchase the Kings outright? Why exactly is the City of Sacramento doing the Kings work for them in selling tickets and “sponsorship deals”?

Nick Swisher is handsome.

by ChrisCEIT on Apr 28, 2011 1:09 AM PDT up reply actions

My understanding

Is the $10 million figure is meant to be an investment in annual revenue in the Kings (via season tickets, luxury boxes, advertising).

You’re right – for an arena, that’s a miniscule figure. For annual cash flow to the franchise, it’s pretty big.

Burklemaniac

by otis29 on Apr 28, 2011 4:53 AM PDT up reply actions

so

they’re going to buy up the tickets the Kings can’t sell in 2011-2012 and then what? Act as some kind of consortium for a secondary market that doesn’t currently exist? I’m not buying it – not in the slightest. These companies aren’t just throwing their hard earned dollars away each and every year the Kings come up short financially (as they say they are, and I’ve repeatedly expressed how that can’t be the case).

You’re right though. If the city (and it’s business interests) cut the Maloofs a $10M check each May, then yeah, that might change their mind. Good move, Mr Johnson. A true leader of business. Blech.

Nick Swisher is handsome.

by ChrisCEIT on Apr 28, 2011 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

it’s not $10M in deposit currently, as was reported earlier. It’s $2M.

by ChrisCEIT on Apr 28, 2011 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

As Otis mentioned above

The money is new revenue for the organization in the form of tickets, luxury boxes, advertising, sponsorships, and whatever else this companies can work with the Kings on.

Why is the city doing the Kings work? That’s the question we are all asking ourselves too. But the money is certainly not for the arena; that’ll come later (if/when we get to that point)
