Who to study?

A lot of times we as fans try to compare players to other players. We see similarities, we notice where one player has something that the other doesnt; we just love to find comparisons. And lots of times, we say that a certain player should go learn from a star that has a similar playing style. THAT is what this fanpost is all about.

Details after the jump.

Star-divide

 The question I propose here is: Who do you want our players learning from? Who's game do you want them to study?

Obviously I don't mean that the entire team as a whole should study one player. I mean, for example: Which player should Tyreke learn from? DeMarcus? JT?

And let's exclude the vets such as Udrih, Dalembert, and Garcia. Focus on the key players, and the players that have potential.

As such, I ask you all to think of a player that each of our players should learn from.

Do this for: Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, Omri Casspi, Donte Greene, Jason Thompson, Hassan Whiteside, and DeMarcus Cousins.

Post which player you would pair up with each of our players, and why.

I'll just start with one.

I would like DeMarcus to study Zach Randolph’s game.
As everyone can see in the playoffs, Randolph is a straight up beast. He gets boards, has a nice jumpshot, and does all the dirty work. And he always RUNS up and down the court. He hustles back onto defense. That’s something I would like to see Cousins do more of.

I'll think more about this but I already have a couple in mind

And I’ll limit it to teams in the playoff still (and they’re not completely realistic). You also said study, not become that player so…

Cousins = ZBo on O, Perkins on D
Tyreke = Westbrook (the good, but especially how not to replicate the bad!)
JT = Joakim Noah
Donte = Shane Battier or Luol Deng
Omri = Shane Battier or Luol Deng
Pooh = JJBarea
Thorton = Jason Terry
Whiteside = Ibaka

Great list

though i initially though of Daly for Whiteside.

I would make a few adjustments.

JT = Buck Williams and Charles Oakley
Cousins = Tim Duncan and Hakeem

Cousins isn't as athletic as Dream.

But Duncan definitely. Just don’t think he has Duncans temperament either. JT as Buck Williams or Charles Oakley? Mwahahahahaha. That’d I’d love to see. Both Buck & Oak were much stronger at the same age.

It's about who they should study.

And although Cousins isn’t as athletic as Hakeem and JT isn’t as strong as Oak/Buck, these are players that I hope that they model their games after.

Sigh.

I love your reporting. I hate your assessment of talent.

Again.

JT is not like Buck Williams or Charles Oakley. He doesn’t have their type of bodies (at the same age) and is not the banger either was. It’s simply not his game.

So perhaps it’s not the talent assessment I agree with. it’s the comparison of JT to Oakley/Williams that I disagree with. And, I don’t ever see JT being the linebacker PF that Williams/Oakley were. That’s not who he is.

Ham, this comment is going to be from way out in left field

but for whatever reason I happened to stumble upon this in the comment sections from way back when (sorry if the link does not go right to your comment but it’s the one with the blockquote).

You might not remember but where did you get that supposed quote from me? If I wrote it it would definitely be sarcasm but I never use ’Reke.

yeah just curious

I had two people from GSoM who were upset with me for getting them kicked out and one would make similar looking usernames (like wallywagon1) at other SB Nation websites and the other one would actually use my name at different message boards (like sacbee.com) and say stupid stuff like that.

To be honest, for JT I like Nick Collison

but that’s also because I gave up on him ever having the athleticism to be a force down low offensively or defensively

I'd be nice if MT watches some tape of Joe Dumars over the summer.

Given his size and strength, Thornton could turn into a terrific defender if he puts the work in.

Here is mine..

DeMarcus Cousins – Chris Webber and Vlade
Tyreke Evans – Dwayne Wade and Lebron James
Omri Casspi – Ginobili and Batum
Whiteside – Dalembert for D and Garnetts baseline jumpshot
Donte Greene – Gerald Wallace
JT – Shareef Abdur-Rahim

I want all our players to study Steve Nash.

Maybe that way we’d make our freaking FTs.

Great idea!!!

DMC = ZBo! Gotta love both of their touches from the outside!
Reke = Wade/Bron really just to be an all around player, Jumpers, passing, dunks
JT = Marc Gasol, Grab some boards, hit a few shots and just stay on the floor
Greene = Deng
Casspi = Dirk (not as tall), Hit ur open shots/make a move so the shot is open
Pooh = JJ Barea
Thornton = Crawford/ the Jet
