Possibilities...
If the Knicks are hoping to have about $6 mil in exception money to lure Sammy, is that amount (assuming it’s reasonably accurate) something that Sacramento should consider matching? If I recall, it’s about half what he made this season, and probably fair, given where he is in his career. Do we go higher? Is Sammy’s re-signing dependent on who we get in the draft?
Is a sign-and-trade situation with NY something that might be of interest? The Knicks’ roster is so odd at the moment, is there anyone there who would be worth getting after?

It's interesting
You don’t really know what kind of ripples the new CBA will have. Right now, I think Dally is worth more than the MLE. But if the cap itself goes down, the MLE could do. Or the MLE could even go away, in which case salaries across the board should go down by quite a bit.

LOL Let me tell a little story about a friend I have.
He’s extremely intelligent and arrogant, he is bi-polar and loves to argue. Anyway he was looking for work on Craigslist and found somebody in Sac who wanted to ship him 7 laptops to repair and pay him $50 each. Anyway about a week later, he posts something on facebook about how he scammed a scammer.
He said he made the scammer take a picture of himself holding a fruit and looking like a fool. Anyway my wife found a story with that exact picture on a funny forum somewhere.
I’ve caught him either 1) stealing other people’s experiences and saying he did them to seem funny or smart and 2) just plain making them up for a laugh or attention.
I really hate that about him.

I think we'd go higher than $6 mil to sign Sammy, and I'd be surprised if any other teams outbid us.
The teams that are really motivated to get Sammy are the ones that can’t afford him (Knicks, Heat). I also think that, money being roughly equal, Sammy would rather be back in Sac than anywhere else if he can’t go to NYC or Miami.

Just letting you know
In California Dally would fall under the 11% income tax rate. In Florida, it’s 0%. You also want to look at not per year but total because that is usually how players look at it (even if they are looking at getting traded in the future).

Sammy turns 30 in 6 days
The only reason I bring that up is that the 1st year amount may not be as important as the length of the contract and the amount of guaranteed money. After all Dalembert has been one of the best iron men when it comes to injuries, so even at 30 years of age, I don’t think a 4-5 year contract at least partially guaranteed in the final year isn’t out of the question. Also, with our cap space we could front load his contract.
but, since we haven’t already offered an extension, I’m guessing that we don’t want to overbid. Max last season for a 9 yr players was 28% of the salary cap and Sam was at 80% of that. If the Cap drops to $50M, the equivalent to Sam’s salary this season would be $10M under the new Cap and the MLE would be just below $5M. So, a 4yr contract starting a $7M with the final season only partially guaranteed sounds like a reasonable offer to me. I’m also assuming that the raises will drop below the current 10%.

Enough time to develop JT and Cousins to be our two starting bigs, if we don't make any changes.
Though I doubt Geoff Petrie won’t be looking to get another big man if Hassan Whiteside dosen’t turn out well. Yes, I still have some hope for poor Hassan.

Good point
the casual mentioning of going after Paul and Howard, before conceding that getting both may be a problem, seems to confirm this.
And like SB points out, it is hard to give a reasoned opinion on the FA market when there’s no clarity about the CBA.

Would Dalembert accept less money (Knicks could only offer him MLE) for a one year contract, or more for more years in Sacramento?
I have no doubt New York is interested. But New York media hype will make it seem a lot more likely that he’ll sign with them than anyone else no matter what.

It's going to take more than MLE money to sign Sam, especially under the new CBA where it will likely drop to below $5M
If it’s even included in the CBA at all.

The MLE is one of the biggest problems with the current CBA, contributing to highly overpaid middling players
I think there will be dramatic changes to it, or like you said if its included at all. Sammy is worth a little more than a current MLE IMO, only because he is a decent big man. I wouldn’t overpay to keep him though, because of his inconsistency. Some games he’s huge, some you forget he’s even playing.

Add the Maloof's interest to keep a team they no longer had at a level in there too.

What I hope
… is that the threat of losing him doesn’t lead the Kings to sign him to an extension under the current CBA, as they could do. As I wrote yesterday, I think there’s an opportunity to upgrade the position, but that can’t be in play if they sign him early.
I totally disagree unless we're talking about upgrading the PF position.
There are few Centers that can guard PF’s like Sam, including DeMarcus. And, while offensively Cousins is bye far the superior rebounder scorer and low post threat as either the PF or Center. Defensively, he’s a liability defending long athletic PFs, and he is not an outstanding shotblocker goaltender which is why he has developed the ability to take charges.
I really don’t see anyone who can fill that defensive spot next to DeMarcus who is more obtainable and who won’t cost more. We don’t need offense from that position other then 6-10 pts per game.
I would also point out that Sam and everyone else on the team was learning to play together under a new coach and learning each others tendencies, which wasn’t easy considering the 27 starting lineups. So, I look to see more improvement this season which will just increase his value. I also believe that Sam’s offensive inconsistencies had a lot to do with the guard play.
If it were up to me, I’d lock him in to solidify our 3 man big rotation which worked so well at the end of the season. then wait until the lottery to see where we’re going to draft and then start planning our strategy on improving the guard and wing positions.

What about JT sliding into a starting center role?
His defense seemed improved towards the tail-end of the season. Maybe not on the level of Sammy yet, but serviceable. I feel that if given consistent playing time and consistent coaching, he could continue his progression from a year ago, and be a 13-9-1.5 guy, and continue improving with the rest of our core.
He has got to take care of his fouling issues, but do you think JT could be a capable starting center next to Cousins?
JT could do it in spots because of injury
But his abilities are more or less where they are gonna be. He may become more consistent, in line with the end of the season, but his room to develop is kind of limited. Remember he wasn’t a one and done guy. He came out after his Junior year I think.
Same reason why I think Kembla Walker doesn’t have that great if value

He did improve at the end of the year, but playing the PF
As a center, he’s a terrible shot blocker, a below average rebounder, and has little to no post game as yet. 67% of his shots were away from the basket and he only shot 50% on the 22% of his shots that were in close. Defensively, he’s easily backed down into the paint where he is easily beaten.
JT is fine as the 3rd big because he can play the PF spot along side DeMarcus or Sammy. Can he play the Center, yes, he’s 6-11 and 260, but he doesn’t yet have the skill set of a low post scorer or defender. And, I don’t see him creating any problem for guards who penetrate the paint.

I’m really looking forward to those three growing together. I can see Reke and DMC both having breakout years next year, if Reke is truly healthy, and if DMC puts in the work in the offseason, I think those two definitely have the potential to be all-stars. There is one other point, once the FA market opens, offers to Restricted FA’s can be matched by their original club within 7 days. So chasing after other FA’s, might create a problem in resigning our own. Unless your absolutely certain that you can sign one of your two suggestions, your taking a risk that someone else will sign Sam while your waiting the 7 days for your pie in the sky dream player to chose you.
And, as I said elsewhere, I believe you need a player along side DeMarcus that can defend PF’s until his defense improves. He’s just not quick enough to stay in front of quicker PF’s especially away from the paint. Just because Gasol works well with Z-Bo doesn’t necessarily transfer to DeMarcus.

I think its worth it to see how high they are willing to go to resign Gasol, or how much they’ll be able to in the new CBA.
I’d rather overpay for Gasol than Sammy, given he’s younger and has room for improvement. In fact, why not make an offer for both Sammy and Gasol (assuming money talks over promises of starting). If we get both, put JT on the block with some combination of the draft pick, Casspi, Greene, or Cisco and see what caliber of veteran small forward we can add to the team.

So it’s his last contract i can understand that….but if you’re looking at a team that has a 2 time MVP, has a guy who has a ring and is about to dethrown Kobe as the best player in the game, and a PF who could go off for 25-7 whenever he wants to, plays 1 of the best defenses in the league…..and the only thing they are really missing is a Big Center who Blocks shots, gets rebounds and can get 10 or more points a game…OH and they LOVE to pass the ball! So it’s not like he wont get the ball, its not like he wont be able to show off a few of his new moves everyonce in a while……Dali is a missing piece to MIA….Why wouldnt he go there where what he is as a player is exactly what they need?

Can they pay him?
I don’t think they can with all the money tied up. He may want to go there but I don’t think he’ll take 2 or 3 mil a year out of his pocket to do it.
Miami will shoot for a decent big or a young developing big.

If they could get a third team to take mike miller
or some how facilitate a sign and trade with a third team it could happen. But who is gonna do that for the crap MIA has in assets? If I was MIA I would trade Bosh to get what they need.

Hopefully we know where Dally wants to go come draft time
If we could do a sign and trade for Landry Fields and then pick up someone like Enes Kanter in the draft that would be all right. Hope Dally re-signs though
Hey look! Spencer Hawes is a restricted free agent...
I hear that kid has potential….
I can't stand Hawes!
A nice pass every now and again does not off set the 35 and 16 he would give up.He got pushed around too easy, didn’t seem to wanna add to his game.Passed on summer league when he needed it so bad.I think he thought he ewas alot better than he was cause he had a couple of nice games vs LA.I would rather have Olden Polynice back .Yeah I hate him that bad!

I hate to say it.....
But if I was Sammy I would be headed to Miami even if the pay was less. The guy is already beyond rich from his last contract and moving to Miami he would be close to home, be a championship favorite for the rest of his career, fill a major need, and after the tax code in Florida, wouldnt lose that much. Unless Sac or some other team offers him an insane contract (Toronto), he is gone. Time to look at some big men in the draft to fill the void. I say Enes Kanter. And then focus on FA and pick up either Chandler, JGreen, or Kirlenko. RESIGN THORNTON!

Sammy is going to sign with
whoever is going to let him shoot. I don’t see that happening in NY or MIA. Unless he gets offered some ridiculous coin. Which, again, I don’t see that happening in NY or MIA.
Sammy said that he wanted to come to Sacramento and overall I think he likes it here
I don’t see it being a problem resigning him as long as the Kings are willing to match other offers
by HeuristicLineup on May 4, 2011 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions
In his first interview after the trade
he said he wanted to come to Sacramento because we valued his offense (paraphrasing). He wanted out of Philly because they didn’t want him shooting. He sees himself as a scorer not just a rebounder/shotblocker.
He did his fair share of shooting here. If he went to NY or Mia he will go straight back to his role in Phili
by HeuristicLineup on May 4, 2011 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't think he'd mind taking a reduced offensive role on Miami
considering that they’d be winning all the time.

ya but...
it has to be in range of what we really would want to spend on him. I would give him 7 mill a year tops. If we could turn Sammys 13 million from last year into both Thornton and Sammy that would be great. We would head into the summer still at the minimum and be able to do some damage in a big trade.
If we can't get Nene or Gasol
We’ll offer him 7-8 mil a year.

I think Sammy is the best option out there for the Kings
I’ve seen alot of talk about Gasol lately.I would rather sign Dalembert.I agree with High Tops, his ability to guard pf is huge for us since DMC can’t guard athletic pf very well. Also if you give him 8-10 mill which would be okay with me for 4 or so years,he will play in most of them. How bad would our defense be without Daly? Our perimeter d is awful,we constantly have people blowing by our guards.Imagine if we had no protection at the rim it would be even worse.
I don’t think Gasol will be going anywhere, and I like having the defense and versatility more than scoring especially on this team. The last 3 months he averaged a double double.Ever since the trade of Landry,he was maybe our most consistant player.
I think if the Maloofs will actually spend there is no reason at al we can’t sign both Daly,Thorton. We have so much space.Interior defense is a priority.Sign these guys there is no reason not to unless they just dont wanna play here.

My guess
Nene or Gasol at $10 mil a year
+ Thornton at $5mil
+ a FA/traded SF at $10 mil (Iggy!)
+ (something)
Or
Sammy at $7-$8 mil
+ Thornton at $5mil
+ a FA/ Traded SF at $10mil
+ (something)
generally, I think we land at $55 mil or so.

remember, Sammy is/was getting $14 mil
So it could be a wash salary wise or slight gain if we re-sign he and Marcus.

Nene is almost the same age as Sammy, with a history of serious knee injuries.Does that worry you a little?
It does me and Dalembert is a better rebounder than both.I like the second option better imop

I like the first choice best.
I may only be a pipe dream though. The addition of Iggy and Gasol would tenatively make our team one of the best defensive teams in the league.

One of the worst 3 pt shooting teams as well
Wouldn’t mind giving Kapono a flyer if we are trading for Iggy anyway, but he gets a lot of cash for one skill set as Aykis pointed out yesterday.
I think Sam is great for chemistry, I really do. I’d prefer Gasol over him though if we are serious about trying DMC at the PF. Gasol and DMC both have a great midrange game.

You're right about the 3 pt shooting. I didn't think about that.
Thornton is good and after that we have……… Exactly. We would need to get someone else for sure.

thats a pretty un athletic frontcourt great offensivley tho.
I don’t think we need Iggy.I think get a sf who can shoot the 3 and play good to great d(Battier).Plus he doesn’t need the ball in his hands we got alot of ball dominating players already imop. Why would Mem let Gasol walk?I think they let Gay go before him, they showed they can win without him

you it makes us better defensive team?I see Iggy as a d upgrade, but not Gasol over Sammy no way
by WE NEED A DEFENSIVE MINDED CENTER on May 4, 2011 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I can see why you say that about Gasol and Dalembert
But I have an unorthodox reasoning for my comment. We do agree about Iggy, fine. But Gasol is better defensively in my opinion because it also includes his ability to put the ball in the basket.
What I mean is, because Gasol is a much better offensive player, the ball will go in the basket more. This would give our defense more time to set after a made basket because it takes longer for the other teams’ offense to get set and thereby eliminates or hinders fast break opportunities.
Also, Gasol has better rebounds per game and blocks per game this year. But those stats could be misleading because it does not take into account the per minute factor. But I’m too lazy to look it up. If I did, I would not be surprised to find Daly leading in both those categories though.

Offense creates defense & defense creates offense.
its the circle of life.

Daly has more rebs per game in 7 less minutes a nite
is Durant the best defender in the league cause he scores the most?No ,I think Daly is a athletic player in the frontcourt we need that.We don’t have too many crazy athletes on our team.Gasol is a good offensive player but Daly for all his goofy shots was pretty good scoring the ball the last 2 months.I like Sammy obviously and don’t think Gasol really makes the team better. Our core are young players and they need to grow I dont think rehauling the roster is the answer.Gasol will most likely resign w/ Memphis.Daly really hides DMC shortcomings with him being able to guard more athletic players.Plus he never gets hurt,he never misses games and thats huge.I think DMC and Daly are a perfect complament for each other imop.I was just joking about Durant, and understand your reasining of eff.scoring.Once our d sets up we still have a not as good defender playin c in Gasol
