Goodbye, Shaq
Shaquille O'Neal is retiring. He announced on Twitter that he'll end his 19-year career after a disappointing season with the Celtics. He has lore in every NBA city in America, but special lore here in Sacramento.
This dude was completely unstoppable, no matter who you threw at him. He was the unsolvable puzzle. Kobe Bryant was fantastic during the great Kings-Lakers battles of the Glory Era. But Shaq? He was on another plane, just a gigantic problem, constantly. We had Vlade Divac, Chris Webber, Scot Pollard ... it didn't matter. If Shaq was on and focused, you weren't stopping him, period. In 16 playoff games against the Kings, Shaq averaged 30.7 points and 15.7 rebounds. Thirty and fifteen.
He wasn't just dominant -- he was completely hateable. He called our team the "Queens." He made fun of us, and our cowbells. Even after his prime was gone and he no longer competed for championships, he pretended he had no idea who Spencer Hawes was. He seemed to genuinely consider Sacramento a joke he wasn't in on, a mistake on the NBA map that he'd rather didn't exist.
Shaq was a total villain in Sacramento in every way, so much so that I vomited into a garbage can when I walked into work at a bar on one fine afternoon in 2004 and saw the front of the Sacramento Beesports page, emblazoned with a big ol' headline that read
"Shaq-ramento?"
I was appalled. An MVP-caliber center, a legit superstar and Hall of Famer on just the other side of his prime ... and I was appalledour fine newspaper would suggest him a potential target. That's how hateable, how much of a villain Shaq was for us. I don't think I was alone. I don't think many other fans would have clamored for a Shaq trade, were one even possible. (It wasn't.)
We can all appreciate Shaq's greatness, and be thoroughly entertained by his antics. (His feud with Kobe remains a highlight.) But in the end, I'll always remember Shaq as the BAMF that destroyed the Kings when it mattered most, the guy that didn't break our hearts in one shot like Horry, but stomped our hope like a megalith Beelzebub.
Goodbye, Shaq. Thanks for ruining our dreams.

Oh, come on, man...
I hated Shaq, too, but it was because he was so ridiculously good and dashed our hopes during every playoff series in which he faced Sacramento.
I understand not liking the dude because you’re a Kings fan. But, I’ve forgave him a long time ago and accepted the situation for what it was: Shaq was the best, most dominant player in the game. He just happened happened to play for the bad guys.

Normally, I'm not a hater
But in Shaqs case I am. I hated the fact that a mickey mouse attraction for the league was allowed to travel, foul, and dunk on every play. Any other player woulda fould out by halftime. I hated the fact that the league had an MVP who couldnt make a shot if you managed to keep him 4 feet from hoop, much less a free throw. Was Shaq an amazing physical and athletic specimen? Oh yea. A P.O.S? Oh yea

Flip side to that
The league allowed Shaq to be battered in ways nobody else had to endure. If they called every foul, nobody could have defended Shaq. Well, nobody could anyway, but it would have been even worse.
Never forget, I'm an idiot.

But I don’t have the same venom I have towards him as I do with Kobe Bryant, Robert Horry, or that pissant, Rick Fox.

Fox has to top the list, because:
The other guys we hated because of how good/clutch they were. Fox we hated because he was truly a mediocre player that played dirty.
And also because his news channel is a joke.

Indeed
my hatred of Shaq has since dissipated into respect for his dominance, and even fondness for his entertainment value once we were no longer the butt of his jokes. Not to mention the fact that Laker fans couldn’t stand him.

Shaq was just another immature talented player
who sold his soul for fame. He never played for the love of the game, but only for the love of himself. The exact opposite of a sports role model. Every single of his quotes was either about how cool he is or demeaning to someone else. He was given the great gift of having the best body build ever for the game of basketball, he completely wasted it and still managed to end up in the all-time top 10. For me Shaq always was (at least after he moved to LA) a basketball disappointment and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him the last 5 years making a fool out of himself.

Which begs the question...
How good could he have been with just a modicum of work ethic in the past 5-7 years to keep his fat ass in shape and on the court? A man of his size and skills you don’t just lose with age should still be somewhat dominant even at his age. It’s rather sorry if you ask me.

Agree. Shaq wasn't that bad.
I always thought that he was just making those stupid “Queens” comments to get under our skin, which worked incredibly well and probably amused him.

Just see it for what it was.
I take Shaq’s Sac-bashing as a compliment. It meant the Kings were always on his mind, which really meant that he respected our team because he knew they would pose a threat. Part of winning a championship is doing whatever it takes. His psychological attacks were meant to distract our team and its fans.
If you hate Shaq, it’s only because he was better than our guys. And if you don’t believe me, then imagine if Shaq had signed with Sacramento instead of L.A. after he left Orlando. He is a guy you WANT on your team.

the ‘overrated’ comment was based on the head-to-head matchups between David and Hakeem during the non-jordan years playoffs that lead to the 2 Rockets titles. There was that one year where Dream made both Robinson and a young Shaq look bad in succession.

Hardest part about ranking players
is that every era is different. You could probably take some players that are mediocre in this era that’d be great in another, and great players from another era that might be mediocre now. Basketball has changed more than any other sport in my belief, even in just the last 30 years.

Unlike the other coattail riding Faker d-bags from that era (paging mr. fox. mr. fox to the white courtesy d-bag phone please). Doesn’t mean I was particularly fond of him back in the day though!
Although I didn't enjoy his antics...
I consider Shaq to be the greatest physical specimen to ever play professional sports. Although he couldn’t shoot free throws worth a damn, Shaq was incredibly coordinated for a man his size and it is a sad day when the league loses a player like this, no matter what teams he played for.
If DeMarcus Cousins can develop into even 80% of what Shaq was in his prime, Sacramento fans are in for an amazing decade.

But not on the basketball court as I think he underachieved because he didn’t take care of his body or ever learn to make a free throw. As dominant as he was once upon a time, he could have accomplished more with better work ethic.

he would no doubt be the greatest big of all time, and one of the best ever. There’s things about Shaq that I love. I love his sense of humor, how outgoing he was, his generosity at times, and a helluva lot of other stuff I can’t think of. I hate how he never was able to be mature and grow up, how he would hold stupid grudges, his selfishness, his propensity to make a dumb statement and hold by it, and his work ethic or lack thereof. I sorta wish he would have just retired after the great season in PHX, but he will go down as one of the most dominant players to ever play the game and definitely the biggest personality to step on the court.

But I always loved Shaq. Hated that he was a Laker, and hated what he did against the Kings. But watching his career from LSU on through the NBA the guy was dominant, and had a ton of fun doing it. Sure, he didn’t maximize his talents, but it’d be hard to say he didn’t live life to the fullest.
I’ll miss his personality and enjoyment of the game more than anything else. He was truly larger than life, which is really saying something.

sd377 wants to ban me for unleashing the Kaepernick Supernova Gamma Ray
Shaq found a way to always be in the news.
Liked, hated loved, feared – he dominated NBA basketball for nearly 20 years. As a player, as mouthpiece, a clown (The Big Aristotle, Diesel, etc.), a taunter, a strategy changer (Hack a Shaq), his acting career (Blue Chips, Shazaam!), his rap career, his police career.
He was simply a dominant athlete – incrediblly quick feet, fast jumper, superb hands, incredible strength. No one that big and strong should be that fast and quick and agile. As a basketball player – He never could shoot further than 8 feet from the basket – not a jum shot, not a hook shot, not a free throw (crossing the line all time) and never a 3 – but he could pass and see the floor, and he could dominate on offense by creating space and on defense by taking up space.
For all the negatives – his dismissal of Sacramento was mean spirited and was it’s own form of utlimate respect, but there isn’t too much more. The guy was funny and there are too many stories of his generostiy to ignore. He showed little emotion on the court for a guy who got hacked, slapped, shoved, scratched, grabbed, pushed and bodied as much as he did. I wish he had worked as hard on his game as his public image but for a guy who both worked hard and hardly worked he is one of the NBA’s greatest ever. His MVP awards and 4 Championships are testimony of that.
Happy Retinrement Shaq, I respect you but won’t miss you.
