More Cowbell: Jimmer Fredette Talk, Coaching Paths

Jerry Reynolds on The Rise Guys
Our friend J.R. talked to the Men of Rise this morning. There was Jimmer talk.

Chad Ford: Mock Draft 4.0
Ford has Kemba Walker locked at No. 7. Mentions the Fredette possibility. Also did so in his Wednesday chat.

GSoM: Mark Jackson in the Context of Other Broadcasters Turned Coaches
Nate Parnham has an excellent breakdown of the precedents for the Mark Jackson hire for Golden State. Lesson: who knows what makes a good coach? I fully expect to endorse Marv Albert in coming years.

Struggling

In case you can’t tell, it’s a) hard to do the links consistently, and b) get much in here that hasn’t been talked about fully in the FanShots.

by Tom Ziller on Jun 8, 2011 11:20 AM PDT reply actions

Need?

Years ago there was probably a big need for a links dump. But as our members have become much more savvy at creating FanShots, the need is greatly reduced. Honestly, it’s always appreciated when you do this, but it’s not sorely missed when you don’t.

I appreciate them myself

I’ve often seen or read some or all of them but there’s often one or two I missed or didn’t find time for.

Summary of top lottery picks from Ford's chat

- Thinks MN will trade #2 pick. Monta Ellis a possibility. Says they would love to get JaVale McGee – seems interesting, which team blinks first there? Wall-Williams would be a great combo for Washington.

- Jazz still have Knight in lead at #3, but in Europe now scouting European players. So Knight not a sure thing.

- Cavs probably take Kanter at 4 if he is there.

- Raptors looking at Knight, Walker, Euros at 5

- Leonard and Euros in play at 6 for Wiz

- For Kings, Knight first on their board. Kemba and Leonard possibilities. Jimmer could go to Kings at 7. Good fit with Reke

by SPTSJUNKIE on Jun 8, 2011 12:09 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I'm still holding out hope that the Jazz try to draft Kanter at 3

And Knight somehow lands into the team’s lap at 7.

Is Jimmer a good fit with Reke?

Love his outside shooting, but who guards the fast guard on defense? I think the best fit with Reke is a ball-moving, playmaking quick guard and a 3 with a reliable outside shot.

he might not be as "quick" as others

but you just described jimmer. He can get others involved. he can make plays for himself. he can hit the 3.

The team has to play team defense.

Funnel the guards toward Dalembert.

dont forget cousins.

He will need to develop into a more consistent shot blocker. I think it is to his benefit if he is covering centers and not PFs.

Shot blocking is great

but somewhat overrated. I’d rather he worked on defensve positioning and challenging shots, something that he seemed to get better at towards the end of the season. Please work on that pick-and-roll D! I just don’t see him ever being a dominant shot blocker

poor image

I agree with your assessment but chose “shot blocking” for whatever reason. I think defense is all about positioning and footwork. I totally agree with casey. defense is more of a team concept then individual.

The shot blocking stat itself may be overrated

But if you’ve got a guy that blocks shots guarding the paint. He’s there all night altering shots and keeping guys from driving in the first place, which is a not a statistic that can be tallied. Cousins is not that type of player right now but is really good at drawing charges which is rare for a big.

Jerry put in a double IF on keeping the pick

sounds like they’re trying to trade it, or considering the idea pretty seriously.

Maybe the Kings entice Jazz to swap 7 for 3. Maybe give up Casspi in addition to 7 to move up to 3.

Some media people out here floated this idea, but instead of Casspi they said ’Reke. I laughed.

People in Utah think they can get Reke and the 7 for the 3?

You have got to be kidding me. Thats worse than the trade kwill proposed to libertyballers!

No doubt.

But the way it seems going around the SB sites, Cleveland prob would say they should offer the 4 for Tyreke and the 7.

ps

I dont think they do that deal. They want a PG of the future. I think B. Knight is their guy.

I think that happens as well unless someone wows them

and that someone won’t be Cantor. Now if they got a player they wanted and two or three picks later got a shot at Kantor, hmmm, maybe.

They really do need a C as well – uhh, just looking at their roster I see two starting caliber PFs, a good older PG and some good bench guys – so scratch that.

If they want their point guard of the future...

Then I would consider offering the #7 for devin harris. Despite the cap space, however, I think they would want some extra value back as well, but I don’t know that I would offer Casspi or Green with the pick.

Really there are a few other trades id like to do in front of that one

But if nothing else works out Id do it. I think this draft is really bad. If we keep our pick I actually think I want Jimmer. But Id much rather trade it to try and solve the 3

This is where we need to build up the hype on

Pooh Jeter. He single handedly turned our season around in the latter part of the… season. His change of speed is amazing. Surround him with shooters and he’s a 10APG guy. He’s like a CP3 in Eric Maynor double dip reincarnation.

(Insert own hyperbole here to hype up Pooh.)

Utah would be dumb to not trade #3 for Pooh straight up. Hell, we might even absorb Derrick Favor’s contract as a… favor.

This.

They'll be at the Eurocamp

Maybe not Geoff, but team will be repped.

Haven’t seen them mentioned at Vesely’s title game or Biyombo’s workout, though.

I would be surprised if Senor Geoff and son don't make the trip to Treviso.

If Petrie was instrumental in bringing over Peja, Hedo and I believe he was scouting Rubio then he will also be in Italy on the 11th.

Two other connected NBA links:

I was listening to a Draftexpress podcast while I was working and they had some interesting draft insights:

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/DX-Podcast-Jonathan-Givony-and-Matt-Norlander-3735/

They mentioned how important psychological testing was becoming to NBA teams. They specifically mentioned a company Sports Aptitude. I looked at their list of clients, which includes our own Sacramento Kings.

http://sportsaptitude.com/clients/current-clients

Although, looking at their list of clients, there are some teams that draft well and some that draft badly (e.g. Bobcats), so draw your own conclusions.

FollowJimmer on Youtube just pulled a video with David Aldridge....

What I recall, paraphrasing here….Jimmer not a system guy….gotta be able to create space…He didn’t mention any teams specifically, but Aldridge said if you have a center who draws double teams (Kings acquired that in the ‘10 draft) and a point guard who can penetrate (Kings acquired that in ’09), if you can create space on the weak side, Jimmer will be a killer….
Based on Jerry’s comments (defense is good, but the team with the most points wins) I think if GP can’t trade the pick, it’s going to be Jimmer.
