Might we end up seeing Jimmer, Thomas and Honeycutt play their first games as a pro in Reno. Seeing that they haven't signed NBA contracts, can they sign a D-League contract?

I'm not sure on the rules regarding that

but I think it’d make more sense for them to go play in Europe instead in an extended lockout. The main draw of the D-League is the fact that you can get called-up straight to the NBA. With a lockout in place, that incentive goes away. Players in the D-League make like $20-30 thousand. In Europe players can make more than that, per game, and play against better competition in much better cities.

With so many stars willing to play in europe, not sure rookies will be welcome with open arms.

Temporarilly opening up a roster spot for Wade makes sense. Put telling one of your role players that he is going to have to sit while some rookie takes his spot only until the NBA starts playing again, would be a real slap in the face.

Also, with 7-8 of the teams owned by an NBA franchise, there might be some financial benefit for the NBA owners to having thier rookies play in the US. Also, they can dictate the type of game that they will play and make sure that they have the best instruction and medical care.

As far as the legality, the drafting team retains the rights to any unsigned rookie for one year after his non-NBA pro contract expires. But since that aren’t signed it could also pose a problem with getting them on your team of choice. You might not be able to send them where you want to, and there could be a draft of the D-League.

Did Cleveland just get its own D-L team?

I swear last year they were sharing.

Are the NBA D league guys in the union?

The ones assigned there by teams certainly are but I have no idea about the rest of them, I’d guess th D league isn’t part of the CBA myself.

Non NBA players are not covered by the CBA.

While NBA teams can send a player under an NBA contract to the D-League, the majority of the players are not covered by the CBA. There will be no lockout for the D-League when the season starts up in November.
