Free Agency

The maloofs have said that hey plan to sign a free agent or two in the upcoming free agency period, whenever that will be who knows. But is going after a free agent or two this year really worth it? There are some decent players out there for this season, but next year in free agency dwight howard, chris paul, steve nash, vince carter, and antawn jamison will be available and those are just the unrestricted free agents.

I think the kings may be better off just waiting till next season to get involved in free agency, yeah it would be nice having a solid veteran for this season. But just look at the names for next year. The kings have the most cap space in the nba and could offer any one of them the most money of any team.

What are your opinions on this???

Here's the thing

In order for the Kings to get Howard or Paul the Kings would need to make some major strides internally for Sacramento to be a desirable location. It’s not just the money. I think playoffs while pushing the #1 seed to their limit would need to happen for those two to consider Sac.

I would prefer Howard because if we acquired Paul it would probably mean we move Reke, but not necessarily. But it’s all a pipe dream. Howard will be a Laker and Paul will be a Knick next year. Don’t want any of the other guys. Nash’s body needs PHX trainers to stay viable, he would fall apart here.

Also, I would be ok with staying pat with what we have gotten so far this offseason

Really excited to see what a healthy team can do. I think it may be wiser to wait a year to sign a free agent, not because there are better players available, but that the new CBA will have had a little while to impact salaries more so than it’s first year. In this scenario, I think trades which heavily favor us would be even more obtainable.

Nash

I wouldnt mind having Nash for a season or two, yes he’s older but he is a fantastic player and could help our guards on the team. Nash has lots of experience and it would be great having him give pointers to jimmer and tyreke

Why would Howard go to the Lakers?

To play with a 34 year old Kobe going into his 17th season? Or just because it’s LA? If I was Howard I’d be looking at an up & coming team with 1 or 2 young stars. Maybe OKC or even the Kings. If it’s about winning. If he’s more interested in big city glitz & glamour maybe try to go to Miami. They can trade either Lebron or Wade for Howard. Making Miami a more balanced team. Wade, Howard, & Bosh or Lebron, Howard, & Bosh is a much better & more balanced team than Lebron, Wade, & Bosh or even Lebron, Wade, & Howard.

I love beating dead horses.

Howard has said he wants the endorsments and opportunities available in a large market

And LA has more assets to dump to get him. He cares about winning, yes, but he cares about money more. I don’t think he wins in LA with Kobe still there, but he will still go none the less. At least he will get away from Otis Smith.

Where has he said this?

All quotes that I have seen attributed to him have him staying in Orlando. While this may just be a case of Howard trying to say the right things, I have never seen him say that he wants the endorsements and opportunities available in a large market.

What else can a guy do than what Howard did?

He said over and over again he wants to win in Orlando and that he´ll talk about free agency when the time has come, not a year in advance. Still this causes people to say he´s all about the money and glamour. If I were in the NBA I´d be pretty pissed about comments like this. Can you really expect him to say something like “I´ll definitely stay here” or “I´ll never go to LA”?. Come on now, give the guy some credit. I´m not saying he´ll end up in Sacramento, but it´s premature and unfair to think you know what´s on his mind right now.

Dont blow ALL the cap space

But not in order to sign a big name.
Howard and Paul are pipe dreams. We need room to be able to resign/extend Tyreke and Demarcus when their contracts are up. I am in favor of signing a defensive center via free agency (Chandler, Dalambert, Oden) without blowing the bank, and letting our core group make the improvements necessary to work our way up into the playoffs. We need to have the cap space to resign the group that we have, and build solid role players via free agency.

Were not going to sign a big name in free agency

We have a questionable coach, questionable owners, no guarantee of a new stadium, a bunch of rookies and no night life.

Optimisim has nothing to do with it,

How many superstars have we signed through free agency?

enough said. And resiging Webber doesn’t count as he was already here.

If we focus on trades our chances of bringing on a marque player are much better and more realistic.

I think we have a better chance of trading for a guy like Josh Smith

Donte+Jt for Smith.

I would start
Reke
Salmons
Smith
Hickson
Cousins
Jimmer/Thornton/Honeycutt/Thomas/Whiteside/FA aquisitions on the bench. We’d need another shooter, and probably a guy like Chuck Hayes.

That team might make the playoffs.

by VenomySnicket on Jul 4, 2011 1:04 PM PDT reply actions

We couldnt do that

We could give up donte, but we still need JT. Were gonna need him off the bench for the 4 and 5 spots. We cant really count on Whiteside just yet, but if that trade were to go through i think we could go after crawford in free agency for the other shooter. We cant count Dalembert out just yet either, there is a chance he’ll be back next season

by kingman1234 on Jul 4, 2011 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Smith could start at PF with JJ off the bench

JJ at backup PF who could be 3rd center. With Jackson as the 6th big and Hassan as the backup Center. Then go after someone like Kirilenko or Odom for the starting SF.

The Hawks declined the Teague - JT trade

Giving away Josh Smith for the same player and Donte is out of the question.

Things change

They couldn’t make it out of the semi’s and Smith shot 40% in the playoffs. Plus the have $66M commited to 7 contracts. I think JT + Omri saves them $8-9M in cap space, gives them a versitle big to team with Horford and fill the void at SF. But, JT & Donte and maybe a 2nd rounder plus all that cap space could help them fill out the roster and give them room to make some other moves.

Dollar for Dollar, I don’t know of too many bigs that you can get and save that much cap space.

You don't give up on a 25 year old quasi-star

who has already made one All-NBA Defensive 2nd team for what is essentially a cap dump.

It will be interesting to see how they improve their depth

I know some one on their website felt they could get Dalembert for the MLE and Thornton for the Vet Min. So, there’s a lot of spread of opinions here.

And, if JT can improve his FT% about 10-15%, I think he could be an extremely valueable chip. Given starters minutes, he could be a 15 & 10 hussle guy.

Yes and Yes

Here’s is the thing about JT – he is still improving and wanting to improve. He understands the NBA as a career and that staying in the same place is going backwards. It may seem to be an ‘of course" but it isn’t. Aplply that to Evans, Cousins, Thornton (and hopefully Greene, and as a side note, Casspi) and that is what what keeps our hope embers glowing.

by betweentheeyes on Jul 5, 2011 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes and Yes (but no on Donté)

Internal improvement is such a cliche but for young teams it’s the absolute rock that the rebuild is based on. No doubt that JT gets it, I’m just not sure he can be the 15 and 10 guy we’ve been hoping for since he was drafted. I don’t believe he’s reached his ceiling yet but if he is capable of putting up 15/10 consistently then he’s not a nice trade chip, he’s a keeper.

by Bluejohn on Jul 8, 2011 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

He's not going to be a 15/10 guy as a backup, only as a starter

and, only as a center. He could get the 15 but not the 10 as a PF Last season only 3 Centers and 5 PF’s averaged 10+ rebounds.

Of the PFs, Love, Gasol, Randolph,Griffin, & Kris Humphries, only Humphries played less then 36 mpg. Of the Centers, Noah managed 11 in just under 33 mpg & Bogut in just 36, while Howard managed 14 in 37.6 mpg. Five centers played above 35 mpg, 1 over 36 mpg (Lee), and Howard had the most at 37.6.

Howard

I would like to see how things change with the new collective bargining agreement, it might be harder for players to leave there existing teams, I think the smaller teams will be pushing for that as having players leaving for the established good teams/ bigger markets is an issue for them.

Is Howard that good a player, I don’t doubt he is an amazing athlete but is he a great winning player?

Josh Smith doesn’t excite me, I think the Hawks have a few questionable character guys, for a team with talent they seem to under perform.

Do players really need to be in a big markets to get the celebrity endorsements, I think Lebron did ok while he was in Cleveland

I wonder will the Lakers be as bigger draw now that Jerry West is no longer with the Lakers, there last big moves were signing Shaq and drafting Kobe, once Kobe goes will the Lakers be that big a draw?

by Murf on Jul 6, 2011 1:25 PM PDT reply actions

Personally...

I really would like to add Nene or Gasol. I’m more for Nene but Gasol would be great too. Nene can play PF and C, solid defense, efficient offensively, great athlete, and has less mileage than most players would have at his age.

As for Dwight…my money is on New Jersey or LAL getting him. NJ especially can be a darkhorse to get him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them part with Brook, some other player, and a draft pick for Dwight. They’re trying to model their team after NYK and MIA…

Defensive Small forward other than Salmons!

I want to sign either Tayshun Prince or Shane Battier good 3 point shooter and defenders and can mentor teammates to learn how to play defense and resign sammy and thornton for sure!
