Surcharges at new Kings arena could raise $20 million a year, report says
"Surcharges on everything from tickets to hot dogs could raise as much as $20 million a year toward construction of a new downtown Sacramento sports arena, Mayor Kevin Johnson's task force said today. Those user fees could wind up generating more than half the money needed to pay for the arena, according to a report released today by the Think Big Sacramento task force."

That's why you eat before you go to the game
Same thing with movie theaters. I don’t get it but apparently the hungriest you’ll ever be in your life is the moment you step into a movie theater and realize that if you don’t buy something you won’t be able to eat for the next 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s verging into the realm of suicide. You better buy the bucket of butter with pieces of popcorn inside so you don’t starve do death.

Starve TO death I mean
And I like the alliteration I got in the last sentence. I wasn’t even thinking about it, I was just typing.

I totally agree
When I go to the movie theater I wear all my baggy clothes and I bring a big coat (even in the hot summer). I try to bring in 1 to 2 cans of soda. I’ve also been thinking of ways I can bring in some burgers and fries. Maybe a large pizza . . .
But if the Kings stay I will pay whatever price for food that the team needs me to pay!

My friend used to work at a theater
and I’ve heard some funny stories of stuff people have brought in. At the arden theaters there is a chinese restaurant right by and people are always sneaking in the chinese food and it stinks up the whole theater.

Wow that sounds awesome
I never thought of bringing chinese food into a movie theater. I’d have to use the fanny pack for something like that. The other day I watched a movie and just brought a burrito, tacos, and chips and salsa (plus sodas).
I can’t imagine watching a movie and smelling mongolian beef, chow mein, or walnut shrimp though. That would be interesting . . . .

That's a pretty wide berth between $5 and $20 million.
Does anyone know of any arena that does a surcharge for food and drinks?
I think Kansas City has some surcharge but I'm not 100% sure
Its one of the reasons the comparison between the two situations.
Also I agree with you that the Bee did a poor job of reporting the facts here, as $20 million is the most rosy outlook featuring the highest possible surcharge. Considering the range is $5-20 million (according to the actual report they cite, which is where Wally and I are getting that range), that’s quite a bit of difference.
Still, I’m glad they’re looking for revenue streams that shouldn’t provoke too much public outcry. Charging a user fee for people who actually use the arena facilities or the area around it seems to make perfect sense to me.

at the Sprintcenter, sorry
One would think it would be difficult to get the vendors to go along with that part of it.
