I found it interesting

That on watching the defense on the other end after Bibbys shot, Adelman put B-Jax on Kobe and he defended it pretty well.

Yeah I was watching that.

Why wasn’t DC on him?

I don't know

Perhaps there weren’t any time outs left and Adelman wanted his offensive guys in just in case Kobe made the shot? Bobby wasn’t a slouch defensively either.

I remember exactly where I was when Bibby hit this shot.

I remember just being on cloud nine when Bibby made that shot . . .

Then I felt like this guy by the end of game 6

B-Jax was also doing a good job on Kobe that night.

Kobe shot only 3-11 from the floor against Bobby in the fourth quarter that night.

Tizzy in a walk

Really, when you look at the stats and how long he was the face of the franchise, it’s not close. He was like Kevin Martin v1.0, inasmuch as he was a Robinesque player on a team with no Batman, and as such he took some unfair hits for the performance of the franchise. I feel bad for everyone that never had the opportunity to witness the “Tizzy-flip” live.

I would think so too

But I’m afraid the nostalgic video shown here is going to skew the results. If Tizzy doesn’t win then this entire poll series is invalid.

by Mityt on Aug 19, 2011 8:34 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

It's not invalid to us young fans.

I can't even picture Tisdale.

The earliest few Kings I can even remember are Richmond, OP and Tariq Abdul Wahad.

before C-Webb's beautiful smile

we had Wayman’s beautiful smile. Beautiful human being.

I think there was a nice local article/video about him, but not sure. But I did find this from Oklahoma:

http://newsok.com/wayman-tisdale-biggest-heart-…-biggest-smile/article/3369906

I had the pleasure of being old enough to watch him play for the Kings. The team was perenially awful, but Wayman was the bright spot. Tizzy Flip forever.

I have no doubt that Bibbys game 5 shot elevated him a spot or two

But considering it was perhaps the greatest shot in Kings history, and the fact that he played at a high level for us for so long, including hitting many other big shots, I had no problem with Bibby over Tizzy.

Now though I don’t see anyone close to Tizzy.

I actually went Theus. His tenure was not as long as the others but I think his charisma and star presence was just so important those initial years in Sactown as well as his solid play on the court.

I am sorry i cannot vote anymore as Bibby was picked over Tizzy. I am ashamed. While bibby might have been more exciting, Tizzy was KINGS…

Tisdale easily here for me.

I never got to see him play unfortiunately but everything I’ve read showed him as a stand up guy and the stats show how important he was for this team for a significant time.

I love Bobby

as much as the next guy, but does it concern anyone that a 6th man is getting votes to be the 6th best player in Kings history?

by Gabraham on Aug 19, 2011 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

come the ef on are you seriously making that comparison?

Vlade and Webb together represented the style of play on our only championship caliber teams. Bobby Jackson’s is Tony Delk, or vernon maxwell, or john barry but with a few more years spent with the organization.

huh? wha?

by effin steve on Aug 19, 2011 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

In defense of Aykis

I think he was saying 2 things. 1: stats don’t tell the whole story…which ironically might also be your argument for Vlade’s place on the list. 2: That this list is just that…a vote, a popularity contest, and the outcome does not necessarily mean it is factually so.

Then there is my point which is only that some people can’t think of 6 players better than a guy who at the peak of his powers was one hell of a 6th man. Which is not to say he doesn’t deserve votes if people see fit, but that it might be a testament to the lack of star power this franchise has seen over its history.

by Gabraham on Aug 19, 2011 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

So are we including

Theus’ time coaching too? Because i just dont see how BJax and DC are getting more votes, its somewhat absurd.

that a few of the players from the ONLY REALLY GOOD KINGS TEAMS EVER are getting a lot of love from the voters early on, especially when the guy they are complaining isn’t getting enough love (Tisdale) is LEADING THE VOTE.

And I still think that Martin is a much better player than B-Jax. I think sometimes see the past through pretty colored glasses and are less generous to the more recent players.

Strange as it is, I remember not liking his game back in the day, but don’t remember the exact reasons. i think I thought he was soft or something. Whatever, self. All things considered, he was a good guy and a good player for us, so I had to give him the nod here.

But can we work on a way to include “Punched Rick Fox in the mouth” in Doug Christie’s stat line? Maybe 1/1 in ASARF (Attempted Swings At Rick Fox)?

Go for it all. You're a great champion.

One more thing on those complaining of Bibby v. Tisdale

Bibby: With Team longer

Tisdale: Scored slightly more per game (less than a point difference), but on a much worse team. As section said, he was basically Kevin Martin 1.0, the best player on a bad team.

Bibby: 1st All-Time in Assists and 3rd or 4th in 6 other major categories.

I think it goes beyond “People never saw Tisdale play” when they voted for Bibby ahead of him.

Honest question

And this goes out to those that say that they can’t vote for Tisdale because they never saw him play. Would this mean that Luther Head > Walt Frazier, or Ronnie Price > Oscar Robertson?

I get the fact that it’s tougher to vote for a guy if you never saw him play. But some simple statistical analysis solves that. I mean, if you’re not going to consider anyone that played prior to 2000, you’re going to be left voting for Kenny Thomas, and sooner than later.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Aug 19, 2011 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Honest answer

I think that with having such a diverse group of people on Sactown Royalty, many different criteria will be used to determine the greatest.

Some people will be swayed by players they have seen with their own eyes, some will be partial to ‘show-stopping’ moments (case in point; Bibby’s shot above may be remembered by some far more prominently than the rest of his career) and others will be skewed toward the players from an earlier era.

Stats are certainly one way to analyse it, but for others emotion will override any numbers.

Even though I’ve been watching the Kings since the early 90’s, I certainly have a bias towards latter day players. Marcus Thornton probably wouldn’t rate too highly on many people’s greatest lists, but he is very high on my ‘personal greatest Kings’ list; his tenure has been short, but I love the way he came in with his head down and a$$ up and worked hard from day 1. It also felt like a real victory of the front office to snare him cheaply. His enthusiasm in coming to Sacramento was a breath of fresh air, considering the stank that had been hanging around the organisation at that stage.

So each to their own I guess… but it would be a brave person that would ’fess up to thinking Head > Frazier! Anyone?

Tizzy was a great talent - he was large and mobile, had a dependable mid range game and was a world class musician to boot. That said, I am not a big fan of his.

I have mentioned this before and I apologize for griping more than once but here goes. I am a huge fan of intensity. As a basketball spectator that virtue – aggressive involvement in the game is the heart of all sport. The joy of Doug Christie and Bobby Jackson? Those guys earned their sweat and played hard (balls to the wall, left it all on the floor, insert your fave sports cliche here).
Tizzy – for all of that wonderful talent and I will blame the state of the Sacramento Kingdom at that time for some of it (but not forgive it) was a coaster for the most part. His stats and games played are to be applauded but – and that is the big but for me – his level of performance knocks him down a spot and I would put Reggie in his place. HangTime’s stats are marvelous, the guy was a gutty player the biggest knock on him in the Sac Era is the lack of time he was here in the River City.
I may be extremely unfair here – this is all my impression of his game and his easygoing manner and disarming smile may have tainted what was really hard nosed grit. I just didn’t see it and can’t pretend to overlook it. That’s what makes opinions – fair or unfair as it is.

by betweentheeyes on Aug 20, 2011 8:39 PM PDT reply actions

not extremely unfair. good points

i remember one of the local TV sports anchors breaking a story about “Kings players not giving 100%” or something like that. Wayman was one of the players they interviewed to get his take (he thought the story was BS).

If I remember correctly, the sports anchor had overheard (or one of his sources) overhead Kings players talking and didn’t seem to take the game very seriously.

The Kings were really awful at this time, so part of it probably was that the players weren’t giving it their all, Wayman included.

And yes, good point about Tizzy’s smile. It is such a friendly smile that it can be mistaken for a lack of ambition.
