Ranking the Top 50 Sacramento Kings, Pick No. 11
"Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Gooooooooo!!!"
Kevin Martin rounds out the Top 10 of the Greatest Sacramento Kings of All Time as chosen by you, the Sactown Royalty readers. In case you hadn't noticed, TZ was kind enough to put up a much asked for widget on the left sidebar of the frontpage that tracks the list as it is compiled, so everyone has a handy reference.
When voting feel free to use any criteria you wish in your evaluation, but only take into account a player's career as a Sacramento King. If a player you want to vote for isn't on the poll, feel free to mention him in the comments to be added.
Today's contestants: Lionel Simmons, Brad Miller, Metta World Peace*, LaSalle Thompson, Spud Webb, Jason Williams, Otis Thorpe and Corliss Williamson. After the jump, a statistical breakdown of their time in a Kings uniform.
*As of today, the player formerly known as Ron Artest has legally changed his name to Metta World Peace. In keeping with the times, I've updated our poll to reflect this. He's also changing his jersey number to #70, because, and I quote verbatim, "... it’s like something to do with the universe". Never change, Metta-Metta.

Between Miller, Williams and Simmons for me here
Williams I ended up eliminating first because I just couldn’t overlook his appalling inefficiency even though he was the most fun player I’ve ever seen.
Simmons was next because through no fault of his own, injuries killed his career and his performance suffered for it.
Miller, meanwhile, was the 2nd best center we’ve ever had and an All-Star caliber worthy one at that.

Jason Williams takes the cake here
As much as we give C-Webb credit for putting the Kings on the map but Jason Williams kicked off the glory era for the Kings and put the Kings on the national map. My family in Asia thinks of Jason Williams first when the subject of the Kings come about.
Children, before you go to sleep check under your bed for the BOOGIE MAN!!
Lather, rinse, repeat -
I’m going with Brad Miller here. Now, I fully understand that Brad went out like a punk. But he is the only remaining player on the list to make an all star team, and for his first three years here he looked like a tougher version of Vlade. Get a load of this recap of time served on the Kings:
Miller – 385 games, 13.3ppg, 8.6rpg, 4.0apg, 0.9bpg.
Divac – 454 games, 11.4ppg, 7.8rpg, 3.7apg, 1.2bpg.
My uneducated guess is that if Chris Webber doesn’t blow out his knee, the Kings win a title or two with Miller in the starting lineup, and there is a lively discussion as to whether the #52 should be placed in the rafters. Fate puts the rafter riff to rest, but it does not change the fact the Miller is really the best player left on the board.
If I were voting with my heart, B-Jax, Corliss and Joe Kleine would all get my vote before Brad Miller. But when I look at the on-court performance, Miller is the choice for me.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
That sums it up for me
Webber doesn’t blow out his knee – Miller’s career may have also been different. Strange.

OOOF!
I had a feeling you might call me on that… Ok you win.
Love the freaky ass NBA mash-ups by the way. And all your work on STR.
I never Metta World Peace I didn't like.
Now I’m torn. Sentimentality has me go JWill. But numbers have me go BMill.
Ah, I’ll just go with Miller today, so to remove him from all future voting and my sentimentality can dominate all future voting without need for subjective things like numbers or facts.
This.

If you are going to include Ron Artest this early, a) call him Ron Artest as he wasn't Metta World Peace when he was here
and B), Cisco should probably be included as well. I’d vote for all of those guys before I voted for Cisco, with the exception of Artest.
I'll take some flack for this
But I voted Metta.
Go for it all. You're a great champion.

Gotta be Miller for me
I can’t see putting anyone else above him. After that, I think I take a couple exciting PGs, Spudd first and then JWill.

Brad Miller is a shmoe, but he is the deserved #11 on this list, and no else comes close
Jason Williams has mad skills but the maturing he needed to do was not done enough during his NBA career and mostly done elsewhere. I place him further down the list above.
Had he been here for longer, MWP would be the MVP of the list above. One of the very in the League who could dominate play on both ends of the floor. As for Ron Artest vs. Metta World Peace – it is insulting to call Kareem Abdul Jabbar by Lew Alcindor? Should his UCLA records be changed? I can see the argument both ways. IMO, he was Ron Artest as a King and that is the proper way to refer to him for this rating.
Otis Thorpe was a double double guy, Lionel Simmons was runner up RoY. Tank Thompson had almost double double seasons (12.8/9.6, 13.9/9.4) and was a fan favorite. Spud was a joy to watch most nights and best known for his Welcome to Hell line, Corliss is pure class, if unspectacular.
But, Jason Williams – he was spectacular but had no class. He is a highlight phenom but a mediocre contributor. I don’t believe he was a consistent starter on any other team. I could go as far as to say that Jason Williams is an example of how SportsCenter changes the focus of the game from substance to style. But I won’t, because that would be unfair. When Jason Williams was on the floor your eyes stayed glued to him because he was a wonderful showman. I loved those highlights. I grin thinking about them (and that Nike commercial). But there is a reason that the Globetrotters don’t play any NBA teams.

Metta
Hey. was working the other night at Bubba Gump here in Hollywood. And Mr. Metta came and dined with his family. As an avid Kings fan, i extinguished my Laker hate and introduced myself. He was a nice guy. I did, however, refer to him as Ron. hahaha
Went Miller here. Will probably go Lasalle before I go JWill. I loved Tank in those early years.

…and by the way Eddie Johnson cannot be too far away from being a voting choice. The guy lite it up for us in the early years before the ill-advised trade for Ed Pinckney.

Miller is my vote this time around
Even though he quit on the team, he was still one of the better centers when we were winning. He was All-Star caliber for most years, a true reliable double-double guy, and a great passer. My most fond memory happens to be a regular season game against the Lakers where Miller hit a three to force overtime. Miller’s the guy for this spot
Never Turn Back - Crush 40
Being a Fan: 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name!
Its Miller
Anyone voting for Jwill over B52 is doing it because they like Williams – the Flashyness of his game, better than Brads soft jumper passing game. Miller was the better King though, and I dont think its very close.
He can be easy to dislike though, which is the reason he is losing in this pole.
Jason Williams was...
1. Dumb as dirt… or at least acting the part. Definitely speaking the part with some of the ignorant crap he was talking.
2. Constantly taking horrible shots as his .384 FG% reveals.
3. Turning the ball over, usually to the 5th row.
4. My vote for #11.
Webber and Divac were the reason we started to win, but J-Will was why I was taping games and re-watching plays over and over again for the first time in my sports-fan life. I loved that everybody hated him, friends of mine who were fans of other teams would actually acknowledge the Kings for the first time, tell me how Jason Williams is on Sportscenter too much… after years of loving a team most people didn’t even know was a professional sports franchise, suddenly they were on the map in a big way.
He truly was the spark that set the Kings off for that beautiful run that gave me enough payback for all the rough, hollow or mediocre years that came before.
Glad they traded him for Bibby and it’s true – Miller was fantastic – a better player. But… I can not only still see so many of those passes J-Will dropped, I can still FEEL them.
Or: I can still hear Gary Gerould going apeshit… if I was holed up in the one corner of my SF apartment that could get KHTK…
Damn, the memories.

You spoke too soon
Metta World Peace is still just plain old Ron Artest. Turns out he has some traffic warrants to clear up first. That’s the Ron Ron we know and loathe love.
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
Yep
Gonna revert back to Ron on Monday (was going to do so anyway as this was more a one-off attempt at humor).

changing your name doesn’t negate all past tickets?
I guess just changing my screen name and avatar on StR is the best I can hope for…

I was just going to post that
So perfect that the reason for the delay in an absurd name change is outstanding traffic warrants. I loathe Ron-Ron’s team but will never be able to dislike him.
Never change Ron/Metta. Never change.

Yeah
I think if I was a Pacer’s fan, I might loathe him. But I don’t. He was . . . eventful . . . while he was here. But he always seems to give his all, and I think he has a good heart. You just have to overlook that he often has the emotional and mental maturity of your average kindergartener.

Jason Williams about to win 11th of all time in Sacramento history
Wow. That’s all I have to say about that.
I voted for Brad but I understand why people voted for J-Will
But as for bringing attention to the Kings and bringing fans to the team? I don’t know if there have been many individual players that have had as big of an impact as J-Will did.
I can live with him at #11.

Start of glory years > end of glory years.
Hence why JWill’s wildness is beating BMill’s numbers.
On a side note: Do you know how many hours I wasted trying to do JWill’s tricks on court?
One hour. That’s when I knew I could never pass like him, but I could lose control of the ball and hit the guy sitting in the 2nd row just like him, and I was content.
I was JNeverWill and I will be signing autographs in the concourse. Thank you.
This.
According to Wikipedia,
James K. Polk is the 11th greatest President of the United States of all time. This would make J-Will the James K. Polk of Sacramento Kings, which means the best that Brad MIller can hope for is Zachary Taylor. And this is relevant, as if Miller isn’t placed on this list soon I may flip my Whig.

what a worthless, whining oafFor Miller’s first three years with the Kings, he was arguably the best center that Sacramento has ever seen. Statistically, you can’t even argue that he wasn’t the best center that Sacramento has ever seen.
Now, Vlade was also an off-court presence, and that is why is he is ranked #3 in this poll, and appropriately so. And Miller went out like a punk, and that has cost him some slots in this poll.
But Miller had three great years here, all for playoff teams – it is certainly your right not to recall that time if you so choose. But I choose to remember the year that he averaged a double double (14.1/10.3), or the fact that that he made an all star team (the last seven people listed in this poll have not), or the fact that he was a very good player for a very good team (and a not so good player for a rotten team).
And yeah, he was a whiner. But worthless? Not by a longshot.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
For what it's worth, Brad did always have the Steve Young/Brian Grant whining looking face thing going for him
not that it matters but can see how people have the visual of it.
