We need a center lets look at the possibilities:

Howard projected salary: 18M (would make us instant title contenders)
Nene projected salary:10M (would help our offense)
Chandler projected salary:10M (would make our defense relevant)
Gasol Restricted projected salary:12M(would help offense and defense and make us playoff contenders)
Lopez Restricted projected salary:9M(would help on offense, rebounding not soo much)
Duncun projected salary: Retired
McGee Restricted projected salary:7M( Youth and shot blocking I wouldn't mind him next to cousins but washington has a bunch of cap so he will be resigned for sure)
Dalembert projected salary: will only go to Miami .....

I may be crazy but I think we have a good chance at Howard he doesn't want to follow in any ones footsteps(Shaq),he wants to find a team that is ready to win a championship,with really good fans,and probably wants a GM that knows what cap space is.

Dwight does not want to have to always score 30 points a game he would be content to put up 18-20 PPG and lead the league in blocks and rebounds again.
a lineup of
Evans,Jimmer,Thomas
Thornton,Garcia
Miller,Salmons,Honeycutt
Cousins,Hickson
Howard,Thompson,Whiteside + 9M in cap space.
would be very tempting for D12 to say no to.
and if Superman doesn't sign in Sac-Town at least him being in free agency lowers the salary other Centers are going to take.

Then once we sign a Center we could go after a veteran pass first point gaurd like........
So our best case post 2012 Free agency lineup looks like
STEVE NASH,Jimmer,Thomas
Evans,Thornton,Garcia
Miller,Salmons,Honeycutt
Cousins,Hickson,ANTAWN Jamison
DWIGHT HOWARD Thompson,Whiteside

Thomas,Garcia(broken ankle),Whiteside on Injured Reserve.

and if the 10 % chance we have of getting Howard fails then we pay Marc Gasol 1M over what Memphis could give him.and sign a player like Afflalo or Prince who can play 2 positions to help fill out the bench.

2012-2013 Season once we get a Quality Center, resign our players,draft a good SF, and get a good bench player in FA we are set to make a deep playoff run.
then looking past the 2012-2013 season Geoff Petrie has been a genius with our cap. Once Evans rookie contract expires Garcia's Contract has a team option which we could decline. That gives another 6M in cap space plus Evans 5M rookie contract that gives us 11M to pay him without hitting the hard cap.
Demarcus Cousins and John Salmons have the same thing once Cousins Rookie Contract is over Salmons has a team option too. Decline that 8M in cap plus 4M from his rookie contract. 12M for cousins.
Give Cousins and Evans both 10M and save the 3M from their contracts and save like 5M from the hard cap to pay Jimmer.

Why exactly would we want Gasol?

Is he a good match with Cousins? Gasol averaged only 7 rebs per game and 11.7 pts in 32 minutes per game. DeMarcus did better, 14 pts and 8.6 rebs in only 28.5 minutes. Sammy was 8.1 pts and 8.2 rebs in only 24 minutes. Adjusted from minutes played, Sam 0.9 ppg less then Gasol at 10.8pts and 10.9 rebs. DeMarcus would average 15.7 pts and 9.7 rebs. And, Sams blocks would average 1.9 to Gasols 1.7.

Gasol ranked 35th among centers in shooting percentage, just ahead of Kwame Brown, Haddadi, Mosgov, Noah, and just behind Chuck Hayes. They are all still ahead of Sam or DeMarcus, but with our guards and wings, scoring isn’t going to be a big part of what the center brings. So, what does Gasol bring that we don’t have and need?

I’m not saying Gasol isn’t good, but with DeMarcus already being one of our core players and capable of playing center shouldn’t we be looking for someone to play along side him who brings something that he doesn’t bring. I don’t see where we need another big body that leaves us with no one who can defend quicker PF’s.

Just adding stars isn’t the answer if they can’t all contribute and bring something unique to the team and play like a championship team together. Sam worked because he could defend the other players PF’s like Aldridge where DeMarcus couldn’t and probably won’t this year either.
