Ranking the Top 50 Sacramento Kings, Pick No. 19

You don't get nicknamed "Tank" if you don't deserve it.
At the 18th spot in this Greatest Kings of All-Time list, LaSalle Thompson, Sacramento's first starting center and an original Sacramento King, won the vote.
When voting feel free to use any criteria you wish in your evaluation, but only take into account a player's career as a Sacramento King. If a player you want to vote for isn't on the poll, feel free to mention him in the comments to be added.
Today's contestants: Otis Thorpe, Kenny Smith, Brian Grant, Eddie Johnson, Walt Williams, Danny Ainge, Rodney McCray, Antoine Carr, Olden Polynice and Beno Udrih. After the jump, a statistical breakdown of their time in a Kings uniform. (As requested by twasserm, PER is now included in the statistical breakdown)
UPDATE (8:38 AM):
Due to an abnormally high frequency of votes in the past 30 minutes, almost all for one person, I am forced to conclude that someone is gaming the poll system. I have no reason to believe that this occurred for previous polls. However, from now on, voting will be done via the comment system. To vote, simply add a comment with the name of the person you would like to vote for. Feel free to explain your vote if you wish, or not. If you are a lurker who doesn't post much, this could be a good opportunity to create an account (it is super easy and completely free) and start interacting with the community. Voting ends at midnight (Pacific Time) so get your comments in before then. Any votes after that will not count.

I went with Otis Thorpe
Just plain better than Brian Grant at everything except blocking shots.

And he kind of screwed us over to go to Portland.
He was well within his rights to opt out of his contract and sign with Portland, but…still doesn’t sit well with me. I get the sense people are voting for Grant just because he was the most recent name on the list (after Beno, who clearly doesn’t belong in the top 20).
BTW, everybody should remember Thorpe’s 20 ppg – 10 rpg ’87-88 campaign. He was a top 10 big man in the NBA for a couple years there.

Thorpe!
It is time for the robot to rise.
Anyone else remember Otis throwing down the nastiest dunks with an expression on his face that looked like he was washing dishes?
OK guys whoever is screwing up the vote is not funny
Thorpe has gotten over 60 votes in just the last half hour and every time I have refreshed in the last two minutes he has received another vote or two. Also considering the fact that we’ve been averaging around 250 votes for the last few days and we’re already at 100 in the first few hours… someone’s farking with the system.
From now on, you have to write who you are voting for in the comments.

I have taken down the poll
From now on voting will be done via the comment section.

If you're going to fark the vote, at least do it for someone funny like Officer Polynice
Thorpe’s been deserving for a while, messing with his position like that is messed up.
Go for it all. You're a great champion.

Exactly
That’s what makes it all the more difficult. Thorpe had a legitimate chance to win WITHOUT shenanigans, and now the convenience of the poll is ruined for everyone.

I thought you could only vote once per username?
It’s never given me the option to vote more than once
by HeuristicLineup on Sep 7, 2011 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions
There are web browser tricks you can do to make the poll think you haven't voted
particularly if you’re not logged in or don’t have a username. Otherwise your vote is attached to your username. Unfortunately there is no way to limit voting to only people who have a username. Maybe that’s something SB Nation can take a look at.

Depending on how the comment system voting goes
I may or may not bring back the poll eventually, and perhaps the scoundrel who caused this problem will have learned his lesson then.

You can vote without a login
Then it’s just once per IP address. After that, all it takes is some douchebag script kiddie writing something that routes the site through a constantly changing proxy and you can manipulate the vote however you want.
Go for it all. You're a great champion.

My two cents
First, to the person that has nothing better to do with their time but screw with a benign little poll – go fuck yourself.
Second, I’m going with Brian Grant here. He played longer and harder for the Kings than Thorpe, in my opinion.

Might have played harder but Thorpe definitely played longer

i voted for Brian Grant
since I started watching the team in ’86, he was the first drafted player by the Kings that gave me hope. was a tough player, played hard and was productive.
also, is Sarunas Marcelonis going to make the voting list soon?
put me in, Coach
Marcuilonis will make the list eventually but not soon
I feel there are players that were here longer that deserve to be on the list before guys like Sarunas, Mobley, Bonzi, Thornton etc. that were only here for one season or less.

Kenny Smith
It’s probably best I fess up. I voted for Jason Williams twice. Who was the player getting all these votes?
The only reason why Donte' is still on the team is for his psychic abilities and that will only keep you here for so long "buckets"
Oh never mind
But why Thorpe of all guys? Haha I thought it was Beno.

Thorpe
Grant was close, but not quite there.
Also, Beno? At least get some Jon Barry action on here before Beno!
Poor Beno
If the team had been any good . . . .
I think some will find that they miss him more than they thought they would. I can’t vote for one season guys before him.

Thorpe
He was an original King on the first playoff team and one of the first real stars that developed in those early years before his trade to Houston.

Who are all these people?
Beno Udrih? Now you’re just making up names!
Add another vote for Otis Thorpe. I have to admit I don’t have any memories of him, but anyone who can shoot (near) 53%, score 16ppg and bring down 8+ boards, and we’re not talking about rookie DeMarcus here… that’s some good game.
This.
If DeMarcus shot near 50% I'd be thrilled
and he would if he didn’t take so many jumpers/fadeaways.

If DMC shot near 50%,
he’d average 20ppg easy. And if he ever got the mind to shoot 60%, hello promised land, hello MVP.
This.

Otis Thorpe Vote
I like the poll machine. Damn you poll killah.
And hey, if Cowboy Ron is out there, I miss you man.
Eddie - NOT "Fast Eddie" - Johnson
Better King, better Pro than anyone else (yes, even Ainge) on this list. I will put Otis on a dock in the Bay for the 19th spot.
He scored well and often for a team that needed all the help it could get. A second round pick for the KC Kings, his career Kings numbers in Sacramento are impressive but Johnson blossomed mostly as a Sun and won 6th man o the year while on their ‘89 squad and finished a 17 yr NBA career with over 19,000 points. I would place him higher on the All-Time Kings list but for his brief stay in Cali’s Capitol.
“Fast Eddie” Johnson was an NBA pro who was arrested for sexual assault on a minor and is of no relation to the class act referred to here.
Eddie would be a lot higher on this list
if we could take into account his 4 seasons (3 awesome ones) in Kansas City. Unfortunately we can’t.

Eddie was a great pro and probably gets my next vote next round. Two solid seasons for the Kings the first two years in town and put up some numbers that have not been duplicated frequently in Kings history. The guy could score. I add weight to Johnson, despite his short tenure, because that 85-86 season was true magic in Arco I and getting to the playoffs that first year. EJ was a big part of it. We had a pretty nice team that first year before that moron Axelson tore it apart….but I digress…

Thorpe
If only for the fact that he palmed my cousin’s head at Country Club Mall back in the day. Looked like he was holding onto a pair of shoulders, his hand completely blotted out my cousin’s dome. (He was maybe 5)
Plus, I think this is about the right spot. And I get pissed when I imagine Thorpe with the least little spark of fire in his personality. Always seemed like he was waiting in line at the bank when he played.
Mitch Richmond - All-Time leader in shots taken with a toe on the three point line. True Story...You can look it up.
Otis Thorpe
solid stats all around

I remember Thorpe
with the world’s biggest hands grab a board and go to throw a 1 handed baseball path to the outlet man, when he was just about to release he saw something he didn’t like and just held the ball. He held onto a full force throw of a basketball with just 1 hand!
I was stunned.
I vote for Otis
As a result of the NBA going dark and staging a lockout I plan on saying only depressing things until the season starts. If they put out the schedule I plan to also go and sit in the Arco parking lot on nights games would have been played. I will Tivo CSN on games nights. They can't stop me. Its my team and I'll cry if I want to, cry if I want to.

Otis Thorpe
Got to admit I’m a bit too young to have actually seen some of these guys play, but based on stats and the PER (nice touch Aykis) got to go Thorpe here.

Otis Thorpe
Top 10 big man in the NBA for two years as a King back when we needed something, anything to make the team watchable.
"Where hope goes to die"
Antoine Carr
I remember Carr as being one of the teams stars in 1989-1990, and that is when I began really watching the Kings. Him and Tisdale were always fun to watch.
