Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Jan. 1, 2012 -- "Whenever a new season begins, in any sport, there is great hope that everything will progress in only a steady, upward direction. As we all know, it seldom happens like that in this life!

As coaches, we can only ask that our players do everything they can to improve themselves as individuals and teammates. If they do this with all their hearts, we live with the results.

Everything that happens on a team does not become known to the public. This is how it should be. However, when a player continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely.

DeMarcus Cousins has demanded to be traded. In the best interest of our team as we go forward, he has been directed by me, with the support of management, to stay home from the New Orleans game tonight."

Official Statement from Paul Westphal
This team is a mess right now. Jason Jones and Sam Amick are both reporting that DeMarcus did NOT demand a trade. Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that DeMarcus yelled "Trade me now" after the NYK games in a heated exchange with Westphal. And Westphal himself is saying that DeMarcus has asked to be traded twice.

If he doesn't want to be a King

goodbye Cousins…hope we can get someone who wants to be a team player in return

by victory0901 on Jan 1, 2012 4:11 PM PST reply actions

that's a little short sighted

The whole thing probably as more to do with DeMarcus not wanting to be in the difficult situation he finds himself in know and is probably longing for the days when his best was good enough and where seemingly everything he does is wrong. I think both Reke and DMC are stuggling with the demands of becoming a high level NBA player. I don’t think either of them were prepared for just how they were going to have to work to get to the level any team would expect to work hard to reach.

Who is in charge of Kings PR? What the heck is this? Why would they release this statement?

by wabut on Jan 1, 2012 4:12 PM PST reply actions

The Kings want to move, remember?

If you want to keep the fans home (and the arena empty), you put out a statement like this. You let the team go down hill. You bank on the fans getting fed up with the team and any hope of a new arena deal squashed.

well

if it was so heinous as to the point of no return where he is an absolute cancer and everyone is tired of his shit, it certaintly could create a sense of teamwork and togetherness with all the other players as Cousins is just utterly cut off and too much of a cancer no matter what and had to be shunned publicly for the good of the team.

Would I bet on that though?

Right now this is a black eye for the team, but in the long run it’s not super meaningful. We have Cousins locked up for as long as we want. He has no power in this situation.

To be fair I don’t think Petrie wanted to part ways with Adelman. Also I don’t think the Kings have been able to hire the coaches Petrie wanted, they either did not want to come to Sacramento or the owners did not like/want to pay.

That Martin has been a polarizing figure on The Dreamshake. One camp has been sure that he’d be worthless with the difference in foul calling this year. And to be fair, he’s not even gotten reasonable calls, when he should have.

Another camp has thought that he’s a scorer and will find a way to score. Absent the Orlando game, that looks good right now.

Demarcus is to blame for this incident

but I can’t really blame a cornerstone of the franchise for not buying into a coach like PW. PW needs to go – this is the last straw most fans have been looking for.
Demarcus needs to grow up. He knows he’s not going to get traded and for the Kings to trade him for anything other than a knockout package would be ridiculous. Who does DMC think he is? Maybe I need the facts about what actually went down, but demanding a trade? Cmon man thats too weak. PW had no choice but to send him home honestly.

by jadams12 on Jan 1, 2012 4:28 PM PST reply actions

It's not necessarily his fault at this point.

If you privately ask to be traded, that’s not a franchise melting thing to do. The GM can shop you around and have the upperhand in negotiations.

This statement basically ties Petrie’s hands in any sort of trading negotiations.

It makes me wonder about the front office. Last year in Houston, I’m pretty sure it was a cold war between Adelman and Morey, but you didn’t hear a whisper, except for Adelman grousing a bit about no contract extension. As if he was going to get that while never ever playing the guys Morey traded for.

Unfortunately it’s the same one that feuded with Don Nelson before getting sent out of town to the Wizards/Bullets in his second year.

by ResetSmith on Jan 1, 2012 4:41 PM PST reply actions

Hey

Just sayin

Basically I like these players as comparisons to Cousins. They had their "Swagger" and were very talented. For the most part they had successful careers but they also burned a lot of bridges when they were younger. Cousins, like these high profile bigs before him, is under a media microscope and everything he does and everything that happens around him, he will be judged (regardless of whether it’s fair or not). I hope he can handle it, but hey he’s a kid and it’s not easy. I just hope he doesn’t end up burning bridges early on in his career like Sheed, Coleman, or Webber. I would hate to have to look back 15 years from now thinking "Hey Cousins had a pretty nice career. Too bad the Kings had to move him out of Sacramento after only 5 and a half years. He turned into a really solid veteran."

by wallywagon11 on Jan 1, 2012 4:48 PM PST up reply actions

Well written.

I said previously that I’m not sure how much this matters in the short term, Cousins is locked up whether he likes it or not, but it is depressing to think that he could be following in the footsteps of those former greats.

I guess it’s going to be awesome though for whichever team comes up third or fourth in line.

You never let it come down to the choice if at all possible, it's no win.

In the midst of Tracy McGrady’s “comeback” season he started telling the media what his minutes should be – that was the very end. This situations, if they get out, are always just horrible. If there’s grumbling like that it’s better to find a minor player and make an example of him. Trade him for a bag of peanuts.

The Rockets survived a whole year of grousing from Hakeem though, and went on to win two titles, so don’t despair.

by Josh L on Jan 1, 2012 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

That is a ridiculous take.

DMC is a kid.

Westphal is a bonafide idiot as a coach.

DMC needs to be managed. Are you not the least bit curious why Phil Jackson and Chuck Daly could manage notorious head-cases? How about Rick Adelman? Do you think DMC is more difficult than Dennis Rodman, the Kobe/Shaq relationship, Ron Artest, Chris Webber, Isiah Thomas?

Westphal is terrible. Managing personalities is part of being a good coach.

by Hoops Mike on Jan 1, 2012 5:34 PM PST up reply actions   3 recs

Yes, I think DMC is worse than all those. 2 years, isn’t this the third incident reported?

by bignerd on Jan 1, 2012 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

???????

I think your take is wildly misplaced.

Cousin’s agent is denying that DMC even requested a trade. Cousins is 21 years old. He has shown nothing but passion on the court – that is ALL that matters. He isn’t having issues because of his play on the court, he is having them because the front office seems incapably of addressing personalities off the court. That is a front office problem.

There is NO WAY that DMC presents more challenges than did Dennis Rodman (at his best). Remember the Shaq/Kobe debacle? How are you comparing DMC’s minor issues with these guys? Give the young man some guidance.

by Hoops Mike on Jan 1, 2012 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

He's not right to

Still doesn’t change the fact that I think it would be far more beneficial to the team to fire Westphal than to trade Cousins.

by Jimmy Martin on Jan 1, 2012 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

two different issues though

Causing problems with Westphal

I don’t really think any of the players are siding with Westphal right now.

And it may not be worth it now, but I just don’t think you give up on a talent like Cousins four games into his second year.

Guys can and do mature all the time.

I was completely different at 20 than I am now.

by Jimmy Martin on Jan 1, 2012 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

I'd be so frustrated as a player

to be running a horrible version of the Princeton offense and never scoring on designed plays. I’d be frustrated as a center to have both my guards not getting back on D because they don’t know which one is supposed to be back. He’s right to confront the coach and question him a little bit. These were the same problems they had last year. AND his designed spacing is so aweful.

by VenomySnicket on Jan 1, 2012 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

He’s right to confront the coach and question him a little bit.

We have zero clue right now if here merely just confronted the coach and questioned him a little bit. Heck for all we know Westphal could have blown his lid and ripped into Cousins for no reason. Just saying you don’t know that he was right to do what he did.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 1, 2012 5:07 PM PST up reply actions

But doesn't a press release imply at least some support for Westphal in the FO?

Why would they release a press release unless they were damn sure it was Cousins who was out of line? I think if we can say anything with some measure of certainty it’s that Cousins went at least a little nuts, whether it was justified or not is debatable and something we probably can’t know for sure because we weren’t there but that Cousins was the aggressor I have little doubt.

by ResetSmith on Jan 1, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

no sorry wasn't saying what I thought happened

my point was just we don’t know who crossed what line at all so I don’t see the point of saying DMC was in the right. We are at the Mike Tyson zone here. At this point if someone told me DMC slapped Petrie in the face and proceeded to dry hump him, I am not sure if I would be surprised. Anything and everything is on the table short of unicorns sprouting out of Bobby Jackson’s butt.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 1, 2012 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

I understand it was a hypothetical

and that you weren’t saying you thought Paul was at fault. My only point is that I think the greater (much greater) chance is that Cousins was the one who was out of line.

I just think that the FO allowing a statement like this to be put on the team website, means that they to a huge extent back the coach’s narrative, which to me at least gives some support to his claim (certainly more than DC has at this point).

But you are certainly fair in making the point that nothing is going to be a surprise at this point. Anything can happen and it’s almost guaranteed to be ugly.

I don't take that as a direct trade demand

From a really emotional player, yelling “Trade me now” seems like just a yell of frustration, not a formal trade demand. Apparently it’s happened more than once (Jones Tweet) but I still don’t think they are formal trade demands, just showing frustration. Westphal is throwing DMC under the bus to cover his own ass and is making more of these “Trade Demands” than is based in reality. Just my two cents though

I'm not even sold on Cousins as a player

We should trade him while he still has perceived value around the league. The guy has absolutely no awareness about game situations as well as his own game. It’s ok if you don’t have any hops, but at least get crafty around the hoop with pump fakes and head fakes. Cousins gets his shot swatted more than any other big in the league right now when he does his little jump hooks.

He should be playing like a better Vlade, but in reality he plays like a crappy Webber.

by CrimeD on Jan 1, 2012 5:34 PM PST reply actions

Exactly.

The question now is this:

Is management smart enough, savy enough, and have the green light to go out and handle this like they should.

Eventually, this whole situation will end revealing more about the FO and the organization as a whole than it will Cousins or Westphal.

I don’t embrace losing either. Sorry but I’ve been to every home game and am sitting in arco right now and our offense is paramount to “do what you can and see what happens” We’ve had advantages inside the past games and we jack up 3’s… The Knicks had their 3rd string center in because of foul trouble in the 2nd quarter and we make Outlaw our big man?!?!

could be made public without a few days of cooling off and rehashing between player or players and coaching staff. If there was no way of resolving the conflict, well, ok release a press statement. It has been quite evident that the players have been unhappy with the losses and team coaching. It is hard to deal with players that have been pampered all their lives and when one becomes disgruntled, he is unable to handle it and the result is “trade me.” The handling of this was piss poorby management,

The ONLY rational answer is to fire Westphal.

Look – it is quite likely that Cousins didn’t handle something well. He is a hot-headed kid, who sometimes says the wrong thing. That is NOT why this franchise is in shambles right now.

That distinction goes to the Maloofs and Paul Westphal (maybe to Petrie also depending on what constraints he is under).

What rational reason is there for retaining this coach aside from him being cheap? Personally, I don’t think the worst owners in the NBA (currently) care one iota if the team implodes as fan lethargy will just diminish their problems in moving the Kings – something they CLEARLY want.

Paul Westphal is a TRAINWRECK as coach. We are awful. He has no control of the locker room. The players have largely quit on him. There is complete confusion. There is next to no player development. What has he done worthy of retaining this team? Now he is wrecking the relationship with a very young, potential franchise big man……

What is the confusion?

by Hoops Mike on Jan 1, 2012 5:44 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Before the game, Westphal elaborated on the Cousins situation, "He can only have so many chances and something has to be done. And it’s time something has to be done." Westphal is not sure if Cousins will travel with the team on their two game road trip that begins on Tuesday in Memphis. He did say that Cousins needed to do some "soul searching" and that he hopes that, "DeMarcus has a change of heart and joins up with full reinstatement, that’s really up to him and I hope that."

Specifically

I 100% don’t think the Maloofs would stoop so low as to orchestrate the press release that went out today in order to ruin the arena plans here. And I 1000% don’t think the NBA would play that card here.

Now, the fact that they kept PW this year on the cheap and hired a bunch of questionable assistant coaches and kept salary at the minimum to me is a good sign the organization is limiting expenses to keep flexible with the whole potential moving process and probably have zero commitment to staying unless they get their socks blown off in the negotiating. So in that sense, I could see the arguement this is about Anaheim: the fact they’d rather keep expenses at an absolutely minimum than try to compete and that in turns lets this lockeroom stuff get worse and worse.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 1, 2012 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

This is my conspiracy theory:

The fans are going to get fed up with the losses, the horrible (and orchestrated) mismanagement by Westphal & Co., and the NBA’s corruption in general. Ergo, the arena situation will derail. Only an exciting season (and playoff subsequent playoff berth) could have saved Sacramento.

So far so good.

Without an offseason or camp he’s having to figure out player combinations in games, which has its problems. Some decisions are puzzling, but I’m happy he’s willing to play his bench.

Also, he seems very player friendly and has a simply amazing group of assistants.

Adelman wouldn’t play the young guys much at all, so far McHale seems more than willing to do that. He rode the starters hard last night vs Atlanta, but with 2 days off (which is a lot this year I guess) coming up before a trip to LA for Lakers/Clippers.

If the Rockets come out of their first 10 games with a winning record, look out for them.

That DMC and Westphal are either in on this and pretending to blow up OR the Maloofs are purposefully making DMC mad and apparantly think it’s worth tanking his trade value or his ability to be anything here long term and his progress all in the sake of wrecking season tickets

I don’t think the press release wasn’t written specifically for the purpose of leaving town. That’s not what I meant. It’s just one small spoke in a much bigger wheel.

Believe it or not

but I am actually not being literal.

But I am basing my exagerations on the fact that they decided to build two luxury towers in Las Vegas and dive 100% into the luxury condo business right when everyone knew it was a disaster.

But more importantly, even if they were much more sophistcated then I give them credit for, I don’t think they are that super smart to know exactly how to play the Conspiracy Game here appropriately. Now if they end up funding a referendum vote group, and somehow the last game DMC comes back from a season long suspension, and goes all NWA and rips off his Kings jersey and he is wearing an Anaheim jersey and shakes hands with Westphal and everything is all good it was just a rouse and DMC is totally committed the Kings of Anaheim, I might agree with you.

You mean it's game four and we have a different starting line up?

And it’s not due to player injury? Welcome to the world of Westphal, the man who likes changing his line up every four games, because why not? After all the NBA season is an 82 (I mean 66) preseason game schedule right?

G-man just asked Westphal if he still enjoys coaching

Westphal will be given the boot before DMC does

Hes just acting like this because the team sucks and/or he doesn’t like Westphal. However, anyway we can package DMC for D12 and then trade for another “star”? Does D12 consider Rondo to be one of his boys?

I think this puts the onus directly on Geoff Petrie.

If he trades Cousins, it’s because he agrees with Westphal. If he doesn’t trade him and/or Westphal is fired, Cousins was in the right.

Even if Cousins was in the wrong

Which he probably was, I don’t think that means Cousins is gone.

Hopefully, Petrie sees the bigger picture, and I think he’s been around long enough to.

by Jimmy Martin on Jan 1, 2012 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

For whatever its worth.

By releasing the above from Westphal as an “official statement” the front office and ownership have already picked a side, and its the coach. Unless Westphal completely wigs out he won’t be fired.

Now one of two things can happen:

1. Cousins manages some sort of apology that reestablishes Westphals authority.

Why does Cousins want to do this, since management made his trade demand public? By making the demand public they give it credence. Cousins is now in a position of strength. Will Sacramento really leave him at home all season, complaining to the media and asking for a trade? And if so, for how long, if they keep losing?

If you wanted to work things out you make a statement like “Cousins will remain a King. If he wants to play NBA basketball this season, he knows what to do.”

or

2. Cousins is traded.

I think this is more likely, given the handling of the situation. And I’m very sorry for Kings fans that this is happening.

This is one of those occasions

When you have to debate “who is acting like a bigger idiot”.

I think we now know a bit more of the impetus behind Cousins’ post game comments last night. He’s lost weight, but hasn’t gotten any smarter, clearly.

Westphal and Kings’ management thought it would be fun to make a public spectacle of the whole thing, which only adds to the stigma of this franchise being run by the Keystone Cops. They should just add a laugh track now whenever Petrie, Westphal or the Maloofs speak.

And when it boils down to it, if you HAVE to choose one party to go – it has to be Westphal. While I think Cousins skills are heavily overvalued by many here (he was the fourth best player in a weak draft and is having a miserable early season this year), he’s still got more potential than Westphal.

Time for Petrie to get off his ass, make sure this stuff stays private in the future, and get some time with Cousins – let him know that he’s valued by the franchise and his ass isn’t being traded. Then wait a few weeks and dump Westphal.

Psychological chess match

I think that the reason Westphal goes public with this is to send a message to Cousins. I don’t believe that there is any real chance that DeMarcus gets traded. It’s disciplinary showmanship. Cousins argued with Westphal, and, in the heat of the moment, disrespectfully blurted out the words “trade me now.” Westphal has had enough of his shit, so decides to suspend him for a game, then decides that it would make a better point if he made the reason public.

If you want to suspend him for getting into a spat with his coach

That’s fine. But why completely ruin the trade value of a guy who regardless of how serious he was (not very, in my opinion), says he wants a trade?

It was dumb.

by Jimmy Martin on Jan 1, 2012 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

Because you have no intention

of trading him.

"Minimize excursions to the basket" - Paul Westphal on defending Derrick Rose

by Biscuit on Jan 1, 2012 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

If that's the case

Then why put out a press release like this that is completely unwarranted and would only alienate the guy more, further burning the bridge that you need to cross again to make it right, IF you don’t intend on trading him.

I don’t think the Kings intend on training him, I just think the press release does not really accomplish what you said it was supposed to.

Call Toronto, try to get Ed Davis and a pick

Call Detroit. Try to get Greg Monroe and a pick. Either of those scenarios are more appealing than JaVale McGee. Andray Blatche has his own issues. Jordan Crawford is another high usage/low efficiency scorer, who, if you haven’t noticed, we have plenty of.

Are you kidding me? Greg Monroe + a pick? Good luck with that one!

First of all, Monroe is already the better basketball player. Secondly, he’s pretty much the perfect teammate and has already shown himself as a leader (albeit on a mediocre team).

You guys won’t get a player + a pick for Cousins unless that player is significantly less valuable than the potential Cousins has. Ultimately, you’ll be lucky to get a high draft pick OR a player. As a Pistons fan who had to deal with a lockerroom cancer for a full season last year, you’ll be lucky to get much of anything for Cousins. Sure he doesn’t have the salary implications that Rip Hamilton had, but the biggest thing keeping Rip from being traded was his “buffoonery” as Tayshaun Prince put it.

Cousins has so clearly shown himself to lack a willingness to play team ball that most GMs won’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. All you can sell them on is potential and so far there is little guarantee that the potential will ever surface given the character issues.

Honestly, McGee for Cousins alone is a little too much for the Wizards to do.

You do realize that other teams are doing you guys a favor right?!

Greg Monroe and a pick

This is insane. If I’m Detroit, I wouldn’t trade Greg Monroe for DeMarcus Cousins and Tyreke Evans. Cousins is a headcase, a terribly efficient scorer and a turnover/foul-machine. By contrast, I wrote this about Monroe last March:

How many starter-level rookie centers in the history of the NBA sport a lower turnover rate than Greg Monroe? Two: 1984-85’s Sam Perkins and 2004-05’s Emeka Okafor.

and Monroe also averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds (with 2 steals) while shooting 58% after the all-star break last season.

Monroe isn’t flashy, and you could watch him play and not realize he’s at 20 and 10 by the end of the game. He was the better player than Cousins last year and he’s the better player this year.

Why Paul Westphal?

Why is it Paul Westphal who is making this official statement? Normally, when an official statement is released, it comes from the front office. The only time this isn’t the case is when you have a franchise head coach like Jerry Sloan or Pop.

What if Westphal came to Petrie/Maloofs and said “I want to bench Demarcus for yelling at me in practice” and the FO said “Sure, but you’re going to have live or die by it. If you want to do it, your face is on the move, not us.”

And generally when something like that happens, it is because the superiors don’t fully believe in the decision.

Thoughts?

by nobodyinparticular on Jan 2, 2012 2:32 AM PST reply actions

My guess is because the nature of the press release was personnel related which generally is the responsibility of the coach
