The Kings, according to a source, will not be offering Thompson -- no longer starting in Sacramento and posting career lows in points and rebounds -- an extension.

The Kings may give Jason Thompson the starting role over JJ Hickson :-/

J.J. Hickson, Kings (19th)
The agent for both players, Andy Miller, said last week that he’d had “boilerplate” conversations with the Kings about an extension for Hickson, but had not made much headway. Hickson is hoping that Sacramento wants to keep him around after giving up a first-round pick and forward Omri Casspi for him last summer. The two sides will “revisit” a deal in the next few days, Miller said.

Have to say that I don't like this
Whatever his faults, JT’s a consistently hard worker, and his willingness this year to finish at the rim with dunks, rather than garbage flips that rim out, has been great. It’s a shame to think how he might have developed under different coaching, he’s always appeared to be someone willing to put the time in. I assume the motivation for extending JJ over JT is greater upside; good thing the organization has shown such remarkable player development over the years…
This saddens me
He has been the best player on the team this year. I really hope this doesn’t affect his effort he’s been showing so far this season. It’s even worse that they are considering an extension for JJ but not JT. Just terrible

This upsets me, especially when JT has been putting in the effort and showing improvement.
Asked if the Kings had any intention of trading Cousins, basketball president Geoff Petrie said, "No."
Devil's advocate
If the Kings do not tender offers to Thompson or Hickson, they go into next year with about $40m in salary. If they took the $20m that they will be under the cap (figuring a $2m bump in the cap) and made oversized offers to RFA’s D.J. Augustin and Ryan Anderson, would the team be better?
Of course, this will not happen, as it is predicated on the insane notion that the owners will actually spend more than the league mandated minimum. But if it could happen, what do you think?

Okay, I see your points on having greater salary flexibility. That makes sense.

JT would not take much money at all
I don’t see any point in keeping Hickson. I don’t think keeping JT or letting JT go would have much impact on said scenario at all. What worries me is that they are considering extending Hickson which I think is a bad idea especially since I think he’ll demand more and GP’s habit of overpaying returning players.

JT's qualifying offer stands at $4.1m
Not sure if they can negotiate an extension under that number or not.

I didn't think about just signing a new deal as a RFA instead
that would be ok with me. I’d just hate to see him go, he is a great role player. What would really urk me is if they kept Hickson instead just to protect GP’s ego

That would be great!
I’m fine with not jumping the gun on JT like we did Garcia. I would just be livid if we offered JJ an extension right now

Sweet, more money
So we can barely grace the minimum salary cap by squandering it on another dead fish (Salmons,Outlaw I’m looking at you – but mostly at Salmons).

I understand this more than I understand why the Kings aren't starting him over Hickson
JT is an obvious candidate for letting him test the market as a RFA, since the Kings will be able to match any contracts. He’s not good enough to get vastly overpaid, but if someone wants to, by all means let them. Otherwise, the Kings can give JT a 4-5 million a year deal for 4 years, which would be fine with me.

Agree. I'd also add both players are candidates to come back on a qualifying offer
Both JT and JJ have a lot to prove. No need to commit 5-6 million a year on one prematurely. Though it could cost us more in the long run if one (JJ particularly) breaks out.
Kings, where doing everything on the cheap...
…and somehow overpaying for worse players happens.
JT is the Kings current best big. He’s better than Hayes, he’s more talented than Hickson and he’s more consistent than Cousins.
By no means do I mean he has the most potential. However, when it comes to consistency and pure hustle. He’s the best Big the Kings currently have and have had in recent years. (yeah people would point at Sammy, but personally I never cared for his play and thought people overrated him because of his decent interior D.)
It’s easy for people to lay in on JT a lot of the time, I’ve noticed he tends to be the scapegoat for some fans. It’s funny how in the last 3 years his numbers have decreased, but so has his play time. Still, he provides the kind of spark that bigs should provide when he comes in. He plays hard, has a good work ethic and through all the BS he has endured has never been in ANY kind of trouble.
Petrie and company have failed time and time again to truly develop young bigs in Sacramento. Young potential tends to be wasted on this team and even the young talent that excels at first (Tyreke) tends to just stay around the same level because the team built around them is selfish and/or coaching staff is unable to truly develop them.
You sign coaches on the cheap, you get underdeveloped players. Even then, JT has managed to stay consistent and coming into this year the subtle changes in his game are nice to see and a pleasant surprise.
He whines less, he goes harder to the rim (and actually finishes, see posters dunks this season already), he attempts more backdown moves, his jumpers looks smoother, his D looks more solid and still hustles his ass off even when they’re getting blown out.
But no, let’s not sign JT because that would be over paying him. Lets let him test the market, because no team would want to sign a young Big who hustles and rebounds. (See Warriors, See Cleveland, See Orlando) Even if JT gets a low affordable contract, Kings won’t go after him, because the Front Office is cheap, because they don’t make sensible decisions anymore, and because Hayes and Hickson are priorities over JT for no reason, because I can’t for the life of me think anyone would actually think Hayes is better than JT. Hayes seems like a good locker room guy, but his talent on the court leaves a lot to be desired.
No no, Kings making any effort to build a team that makes any sense whatsoever is ludicrous…
Lets instead trade away Beno and get back a player no one wanted anymore and continue to overpay him.
Lets sign Outlaw, for the lulz.
Lets overload our backourt with shoot first players
Let’s not get any type of true PG
Lets not start the right guys
Let’s fire the coach in the first two weeks because the blow outs and bad play were his fault. (not entirely against the firing, but it’s also obvious the way the team was built by Petrie is the true problem)
Lets act as if the Maloofs and Petrie are competent
Let’s not sign JT because he might get over paid and we’ve had so much success getting decent bigs the last 6 years.
It was fun JT, hope you go to a team that will appreciate your skill set a bit more with competent coaching, and that you never have to sit in the bench enduring players like Crab Hands Moore and Hickson in front of you in the rotation.
