One of the things I always thought I was blessed with in my career was that I played with a lot of guys who got along well – we had a great group of guys. People always ask me, ‘Do you miss the game?’ I never miss playing, but I miss being around my teammates. We had Eddie (Johnson), Woody (Mike Woodson), Reggie Theus, Otis Thorpe – I love Otis like a brother to this day – Carl Henry, Rich Kelley. We had all these guys who were close and liked each other, and were willing to make sacrifices to make the team better.

I love me some LaSalle
But that team that he is talking about – the one that was “willing to make sacrifices to make the team better” – had one winning season (‘82-’83 in KC). They did make the playoffs in ‘83-’84 and ‘85-’86, albeit with losing records.

They did a lot without a lot of topline talent
And no superstar. They played hard, and they played well. And a better group of guys I don’t think we’ve seen in Sacramento.

I do agree
that however many wins they got, they could not have gotten much more. That squad used every bit of their talent, and effort was never questioned.

Just saw Thompson
On one of those ESPN-classics-style (I think it was ESPN) documentaries. I think the focus was Reggie Miller — This was about the Pacers early 90s Larry Brown-era team.
It’s still heartwarming to hear Tank talk about those early Sac Kings teams with revere when he was actually a part of a team whose glory run may be comparable (numbers-wise) to our own King’s early-noughties glory run.
