Batum To Test Free Agent Market
Since no extension could be agreed upon, Batum is likely to walk at the end of the season from Portland. This could definitely make him a tradable asset. Pick up the phone Petrie!

I'm definitely rooting for Batum to be our starting 3 next year...
He plays good defense and has a good jump shot as well.
If we can get him, plus maybe get Hinrich or Mo Williams by the trade deadline or during the offseason, that would be great. Let’s hope some Petrie magic is still available.
Sign Batum and amnesty Salmons
That is the first step for Petrie to redeem himself.

When was the last time GP actually went after a player that every fan on earth wanted?
(Chis Webber voice) Good luck. This GM has no freakin clue. Maybe he’s getting old & senile on us or something. Who knows?!

At this point I have no hope this organization will make a good move
I hope they prove me wrong but I won’t hold my breath on that one

Before or after we lost him?
I wasn’t excited when we first signed him but after his contract was voided I wanted him back
by Allbenji on Jan 26, 2012 7:39 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
No
Chuck Hayes was the FA target I wanted the Kings to go after from the start of the offseason. I knew he could be had for cheap, and was almost as good defensively as some of the other free agent bigs that would get max deals.

Batum would be nice
I’d be more excited about Eric Gordon though

Aren't you worried about his knee?

if the Kings really wanted to trade Reke
I think they can get a better player than Batum in return.
formerly what_the_crap
Relax fellas
A bit of a chasm.
This actually happened though
I would love to get Batum
He would be a perfect fit on this team
He would fit perfectly
So that means they would never consider acquiring him. If we overpay for him it would be possible, but Portland is pretty good aboutv keeping their players. Since he’s a RFA I say they should offer a big contract to him, something a little more than what Salmons makes, and if Portland matches we go after Gerald Wallace.

4 years, 32 million.
He’d be perfect at SF. Great shooter, good defender. Would love to have him.

Maybe not. I could be persuaded to go higher
But I’m not sure the Maloofs have that much money.

I get this move. They want to get an extension for Wallace first.
Signing Batum before Wallace would likely offend his Wallace’s agent, and risk Portland losing both guys.
"First we get jobs, then we get the khakis, then we get the chicks."
Wallace is a lot better IMO
It doesn’t make a lot of sense paying both big money. Even though we pay 3 terrible SFs $20+ million their FO is obviously head & shoulders above ours.
It would make the most sense to trade Batum now. Unfortunately a team that’s not the Kings will jump on that while GP is in a deep slumber.
by Allbenji on Jan 26, 2012 10:17 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Ya, I would be highly surprised if Portland keeps both,
which means Batum is probably going to be gone unless he takes significantly less money to stay there.

I’d add that the difference in owners is even larger.

Especially since they lost two GMs during the time this team was being put together
Actually think the coach plays a huge role too. McMillan has been fantastic. He keeps getting results regardless of the personnel. Too early IMO to judge Smart, but Westphal really had the opposite effect.
They need Camby's interior D this year to go anywhere in the playoffs. No way they trade him
by elSAVinator on Jan 26, 2012 10:45 AM PST up reply actions
No, but I wonder if they would have any interest in Hickson or JT for Batum
If they still think they are going to resign him, I would guess not.
If they are legitimately concerned they will lose him, it starts looking like a better deal. Gives them an additional big, which they need with Kurt Thomas and Marcus Camby as two of the four bigs in their rotation.
That's what I thought.
They could use JT. Camby is hurt every other game and JT would complement Aldridge nicely.

Rather give up JJ then JT..JT and Cuz work well together..I dont see that as much in JJ
Founder of team Omté Caspeen
I think they would rather have JT for that reason.
Also, he can play C, so they can avoid having to play Aldridge there.
I would like to keep JT, but with Hayes and Cousins in the fold we can at least afford it.
And certainly the drop from JT to Hickson is <<< Batum to Salmcialaw
JT, JJ, Chuck Hayes are all 3rd bigs anyways IMO
I don’t think any of them are the answer for the future starting next to DMC. Out of the three though, Hayes would be my favorite for being the 3rd big

Fair point
This draft is shaping up to be a good PF draft. I know we want a SF, but we may need to get it from FA or trade. Only 2 in Ford’s top ~15 on the big board. But it is littered with PFs.
Who are the guys you want the Kings to draft this year?
Best case scenario for me, Anthony Davis. After that I like Barnes, Robinson, and Lamb. If we happen to trade our pick down to acquire a good player plus a lower pick, then I like Terrance Jones and Rivers.
Honestly, I haven't researched enough yet to have an educated opinion.
We’ve been playing badly enough though that I glanced at the Big Board to see if there were many SFs for us and just saw PFs the whole way down.
I’m not the hugest Barnes fan at this point though. He does one thing well and it’s not exactly what we need.
Is there any reason you don't care for him?
He seems to be pretty solid in every aspect of his game. The thing I like most about him though, is that he is a lock down defender against PG’s, SG’s and SF’s.

Maybee we can get Rodrigue Beaubois too and get a couple french guys.

3 way trade
Kings , Trailblazers and Jazz
Trailblazers get Hickson, Whiteside
Jazz get Salmons and Jimmer
Kings get Devin Harris and Alex Burks from Jazz, Batum and Chris Johnson from TB
There also might need to be some money/picks thrown in here or there, but I think it would be a solid trade for all parties involved (That and you can tell Salmons and Outlaw are both not happy about being here)
Founder of team Omté Caspeen
you missed the part where the Kings facilitate a trade so the OTHER teams get the good deals
Not the other way around

That's a pretty good trade
Nothing assinine about that! Of course that just means it will never happen. Batum isn’t even on Petrie’s radar.
Who is on Petrie’s radar? Who’s the most mediocre & cheap player in the league? We can trade him for Tyreke.
by Allbenji on Jan 27, 2012 5:43 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Damn you Hollinger
In a few cases, there were some interesting cap-management issues that helped prevent players from signing. Lopez, Batum, Hibbert and McGee play for teams that could or should have lots of cap space this summer, and, as late first-round picks, each has a cap hold that is less than his likely market value. In practice, that means their teams didn’t have a lot of motivation to pursue an extension unless they got a great deal.
I like this guys take a little better
Timothy Varner, 48 Minutes of Hell: Nico Batum. His negotiations with the Blazers went sour early, and one wonders if Batum’s relationship with the team isn’t permanently damaged. Batum’s agent is already warning that his client will make himself available to anyone other than the Blazers this offseason.
His agent also said they
would talk to all the other teams before talking to the Blazers.
I like that
Batums agent:
"When Batum becomes a restricted free agent, we’ll look at the other 29 teams before we talk to the Blazers,"

FA list just got a little bit better this year with all the RFA's
Brook Lopez, Eric Gordon, Michael Beasley, Nicolas Batum, Rudy Fernandez, O.J. Mayo, Jason Thompson, Roy Hibbert, JaVale McGee, J.J. Hickson, Brandon Rush, Ryan Anderson, Courtney Lee, George Hill, D.J. Augustin, Darrell Arthur and Marreese Speights all will be restricted free agents
There is a couple guys on this list I would like, even though RFA's usually go back to their team
Gordon is awesome (if his knees check out), Batum (of course), OJ intrigues me (only if we lose Thorton VIA trade), Hibbert would pair with DMC very nicely, Anderson’s game is nice (not sure he fits with us since we have Hayes), Hill and Augustin are some nice PG’s. I would be surprised if we couldn’t at least snag one of these guys.
Most of us would be surprised if we DO.

Lol, same thing I was thinking
Think of everyone you would obviously want & scratch them off your list because they’re not on Petrie’s list.

Interesting
TNT’s David Aldridge on NBA TV on Thursday regarding the Portland Trail Blazers failure to extend forward Nicolas Batum…
-————————————-
“He was not happy. I can tell you that. They never really got close on the deal. The problem with Portland is that Gerald Wallace is also going to be up. Right now it’s going to be difficult to pay both of those guys. By not offering Batum the deal that he was wanting, I think they told him the guy they want to keep, and that’s Gerald Wallace.
“He’s still restricted. They can still match on the offer but I think a lot of teams will be lining up to put decent offers on Batum.”
We should put an offer to the Trailblazers. This is an iron Petrie needs to strike.
Batum is a good fit for our team. We should be able to acquire him for a reasonable price.
If Petrie can swing something along the lines of JT for Batum, it would go a long way in restoring faith in his ability to guide us forward. And would plug a gigantic hole at SF.
by SPTSJUNKIE on Jan 26, 2012 4:56 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I agree
I wonder if our SF production, is the worst production for any one position on any team in the NBA?
For some reason, I think it would take more then JT to make this happen
I wouldn’t be willing to do our 1st rd pick this year, maybe next years. I don’t think we have any other players we could just throw in either, maybe DG to replace the loss of a SF on their team, but that’s a big maybe.
by elSAVinator on Jan 26, 2012 5:08 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I don't like the idea of giving up this year's 1st rounder, especially in a deep draft.
Can’t fail to mention that we have a pretty good shot at a top 5 pick they way we are playing.
I still don't think we can commit another first rounder till we pay the Cavs one
The good side of putting protections on a first round pick, is you don’t wind up giving away the first pick in the draft like the Clippers.
The down side is you don’t have it locked into a specific year and since you can’t trade away your first rounder in back to back years (with few exceptions if you acquire another first rounder from another team) we can’t trade another first rounder.
Yep
This is really my main problem with the Hickson trade. Unless Petrie swings another first rounder in a different deal, we can’t offer any future first rounders until we know we are retaining them.
Sacramento Kings - helping feed NBA fans across the country since 2011
Why would it take more than JT or Hickson?
The Kings would be trading for a player that is a restricted free agent that is looking to leave. It’s clear Batum isn’t happy with the way negotiations played out, and that the Blazers are going to sign Gerald Wallace. Batum is probably tired of coming off the bench behind Wallace and wants to start and get starter money. That makes me think Portland might be interested in getting something for Batum before he accepts a big offer as a restricted free agent that they don’t want to match (i.e., if you are paying Wallace 10-11 mil a year as a starter, it doesn’t make sense to match an offer on Batum for 8-9 mil).
I would try to trade Hickson for Batum and then match any offer. Portland gets a solid young player at a position of need (Camby can’t last forever), and doesn’t lose Batum for nothing.
Furthermore, I would approach Charlotte about DJ Augustin. They didn’t extend him and could lose him for nothing if they don’t want to match. I would offer them Jimmer and then match any offer for Augusitne that comes in as a restricted free agent. We have the cap space to do it. Especially if we were to amnesty Salmons.
Of course, if the Maloofs aren’t serious about adding payroll and improving the team, this is all a waste of time, but if they are serious, this would be a way to get control of the players that would help our team. Most of these guys wouldn’t sign with the Kings as unrestricted free agents. It would cost us some young assets and we would probably have to overpay, but that is our cross to bear as the team is not attractive to any free agents right now.
Ryan Anderson is another guy I like (and he’s local), but I wouldn’t give up anything for him as Orlando is trying to resign Howard and most likely can’t use cap space on Anderson, so we could simply offer him a decent contract and get him without giving up any assets.
Hickson and JT arent good enough for Batum
They could probably get a way better player than those 2 for Batum if he were to be traded. Hickson has no skills besdes athleticism, Thompson is like a chicken with his head cut off on the court. Batum is a good/grat defender and can hit jumpshots. To be honest I don’t think they’d be interested in anything we have, although Thompson has shown a little improvement so maybe him. I like your idea about DJ Augustin though, they would probably take very little for him since they are going to hand over the reigns to Kemba. C’mon they took Joel Pryzbilla for Wallace, Jimmers not getting traded, they would probably take Hassan Whiteside.
by Chent on Jan 27, 2012 9:48 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
I would trade Jimmer for either one of those guys
I don’t see Jimmer as a starter on this team so if we could get a legit starter for him why wouldn’t you do it?
by Allbenji on Jan 27, 2012 5:54 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I dont see Jimmer
As a starter right now either. I don’t think the organization would consider trading their prized marketing machine rookie this early in his career.
