Burkle did not bid on the Dodgers, but he might still play a part in the future of the team.

I know it's a bit of an odd quote pull

and yes I know someone can buy multiple major league sports franchises but given the extreme expense of the Dodgers, it is somewhat good news to hear that Burkle (even though he “might still play a part in the future” of the Dodgers, is in fact not in the current bidding for the Dodgers, especially considering the price could be anywhere between $1.2 and $2 billion.

This is a good thing for all of those who really like to Burklebate.

Either way

I think this is extremely good news. Seriously, I know the Burkle stuff is a long shot but there can honestly truly be something there. I think this is way more exciting then whether or not Sheedy is running for re-election.

The only thing that leads me to be a little optimistic

Is when this arena gets built, I’m not sure if the Maloofs can afford to stick around.

Wally I likes Your insanity!!!

Burkle up,everybody!!!

35 and 31. I'm calling it now. Reke and Cousins 1-2 in most improved award both All-stars. Jimmer leads rookies in scoring, passing and Ole's. Make 2nd round of playoffs and Salmons is not here by seasons end.

the bad side of my insanity though

is that it’s largely based on the fact I feel the plan that we’ve seen so far with the arena is likely a house of cards unless someone like Burkle is somehow involved.

Meeting between Stern and the Maloofs in the near future

Stern: Great news, boys. I just talked with Mayor Johnson, they’ve got some great funding sources lined up for the new arena there and the contribution from team ownership that they’re looking for is extremely reasonable.

Joe: Oh boy, Mr. Stern, that’s terrific. How much?

(Stern quickly jots down a number on a piece of paper and passes it to Joe)

Joe: Hooboy… that’s uh… well…

Gavin (grabbing paper): Hey, I remember that number! Been a long time, old friend…

Joe: Mr. Stern, we’re going to have to make a couple of phone calls…

George (looking over Gavin’s shoulder): Hogwash…

I have a hunch that you may be right, Wally

but of course we can’t really control that so I don’t stress too much about it. But I have similar thoughts.

Isnt there a minority Kings owner that went bankrupt recently?

I think it is a 7 or 9 percent stake too. Could the Kings dangle that to investors (like Burkle) for putting in up front money on the Arena?

Thanks Wally. I can't see any way that the Maloofs can continue long term as owners of the team

From what we’ve all read, the Kings and their holdings in Wells Fargo are their last remaining significant family assets. Even with the new CBA the price of poker has gone up with respect to owning an NBA franchise, especially one as heavily leveraged as the Kings. I hope along with you and many others that when the arena is built that the Maloofs will sell the team and retreat to SoCal to live a life of luxury off the trusts daddy left for them.

Anyone else reading this as Burkle helping to move the Dodgers to Sacramento, after he buys the Kings and builds them an arena?

No? Just me?

Honestly, I feel that they will drag the team down with them no matter what

You’ll have to pry the team from their cold dead hands (figuratively speaking) to get them to let go.

One thing you have to understand though

is that if they sell now it’s not because they necessarily love the idea of selling but because of their financial issues. People in that situation don’t come out and say “Oh yeah we are willing to listen to offers to sell.” It’s simply against their interest. These guys lost around a half a billion dollars and have a tiny fraction of the cash flow they saw less than 10 years ago.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 29, 2012 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

I think if the arena plan gets approved, there is a good chance they sell

But I just don’t see why they would sell the team now. The reason being that they are in financial trouble.

Wouldn’t make more sense for them to hold onto the team now and wait to see what happens with the ESC plan? If we can’t get it done, they get to move the team to Anaheim where they feel they have a better chance of being financially successful. Anaheim has already showed they would financially support the move with the bonds, the big TV deal, Samueli’s personal loans, the corporate sponsorship revenue, ext…

If the ESC plan does get approved, and the Maloofs honestly feel they’re stuck and Sacramento is not a viable market (not really sure how they feel about that right now), it would be the perfect time to sell. New arena, young team, cap space, lottery draft pick = $$$$$.

You could end up being right though. Best case scenario Stern and the city agree upon a deal that force the Maloofs to invest more than they can, or are willing too, and someone comes in (Burkle) that will.

by Crocoduck on Jan 30, 2012 9:27 AM PST up reply actions

The problem

is that if the money to finance the arena comes up short and it’s because the Maloofs cannot poney up enough and aren’t willing to because they are uncomfortable with the lack of revenue streams (for example, they ain’t getting much parking money and they are likely going to lose a chunk of game day income because of user fees) the ESC plan is fucked.

Yet, if the NBA says “Oh you don’t want to do it fine we will make sure to get the other owners all on board to block your move to Anaheim because of the Time Warner deal unless you have a couple hundred million laying around” then they are fucked and stuck with an arena where they owe much more in rent than most teams (because of the loan payments) which also has no revenue coming in from it’s naming rights and won’t because it’s not worth anything now to anybody after the whole PowerBalance disaster, and surviving on walk up ticket revenue sales. And even worse, none of their other businesses have revenue flowing in right now and that’s important to remember because even during good times they were propping the Kings using their cashflow from their other businesses.

The city is clearly trying to avoid selling any bonds either because (a) although they will never say it in public their lawyers do believe it will leave them more susceptable to a referendum or (b) they don’t have the bonding power because they are so broke, or a little of both.

What I am telling you is that if the ESC plan doesn’t work without Maloof contributions up front (as in the City, NBA, and AEG don’t have the money it takes to build this now. Not talking about financing here, I am talking about upfront money and it’s an important distinction) then this plan is fucked without another 3rd party player. And a third party ain’t just loaning us the Money without wanting something in return. And if it’s a higher interest rate than a municipal bond and it’s remotely close to a lot of money, that’s potential political suicide for any council member who votes for this thing. And no third party financer is going to lend the money for a low low interest rate.

And the Maloofs are never going to say “We’re in a tight spot we might have to sell.” They’d be idiots. Either they are going to have to go to war with the NBA or the NBA sees their side of things or they negotiate because they’re screwed. Either route they go, the best thing for them to say in public (and they’re saying it to the NBA too) is that they have no intention of selling and will work it all out.

And look, I am a pessimistic bastard. At the same time, I can’t see how the NBA would okay the move to Anaheim unless that rich bastard down there (and yeah forgot his name) was willing to take the financial hit with the Time Warner contract with the Lakers. And that’s a toooooon of money from what I remember. And I don’t see a situation where the Maloofs like the ESC here because they are giving up revenue streams that in the past they refused to give up and they will need to contribute money they don’t want to give up right now. And I see a city, an arena operator, and a league that are all working together on an ESC while the owners who might not like the deal happen to be out of the loop.
