DeMarcus Cousins Becoming a Long Distance Shooter?

Richard Rowe-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

One of the more curious statistics from the Kings first pre-season game against the Suns was DeMarcus Cousins' three 3-point attempts, of which he made one. DeMarcus has registered totals of 18 and 14 total 3-point attempts respectively in his first two seasons, so it was a bit of a surprise.

After the game, Jason Jones talked to DeMarcus Cousins and Keith Smart about his long range antics, and both seemed to hold different points of view. Here's what Cousins had to say:

"Coach wants me to shoot the three ball, so I'm still trying to find my spots and where to do it," Cousins said of Keith Smart. "That's what this time is for, trying to find it."

Cousins isn't looking to become a three-point specialist. He said when his trainer, Keith Williams, encouraged him to work on the three-point shot in years past, he resisted the idea.

In his first two seasons Cousins has taken 32 three-point attempts, making five.

"I'm still not even comfortable being out there, but coach wants me to do it, so I'm going to try to get it down," Cousins said.

From Cousins' perspective, it is Coach Smart who is encouraging and wanting him to shoot three pointers. Something must be lost in translation, because Smart sees it differently:

"What he needs to do is work on his post game," Smart said. "I told him I don't want him hanging out too much on the perimeter shooting jump shots because in game No. 35 on the road somewhere, you won't be able to find that jump shot."

Now it is just pre-season, so if DeMarcus wants to experiment with shooting long range jumpers, I don't have too much of an issue with it, as long as he doesn't fall in love with it and has it carry over into the regular season. Fortunately, it sounds and looks as if Cousins knows this and is using these practice games as a way to try out new things. This will be something to keep an eye on as pre-season progresses.
