Kings Fall To Warriors 98-88 in Final Home Preseason Game

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Sacramento Kings played their final preseason game at home today against the visiting Golden State Warriors and could not come back from a rough start, losing 98-88. Stephen Curry led the way for the Warriors with 19 points on 8-14 shooting to go with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in just 23 minutes before he fouled out. David Lee had a 16 point, 14 rebound double-double (but shot just 5-18 from the field, the only Warrior with a bad shooting night) and Klay Thompson added 15 points in 32 minutes. Rookie Draymond Green came off the bench to score 9 in 14 minutes, including two threes.

For the Kings, they were led in scoring by Isaiah Thomas' 13 points, but Thomas also was the team leader in turnovers with 6. The entire Kings team was sloppy from the very beginning, and had more turnovers than made field goals all the way until the final seconds of the first half. It didn't get better from there as the Kings finished with just 25 field goals to 23 turnovers. Coach Keith Smart will also be displeased with only 9 assists, as ball movement has been a focus of the team this preseason and an area they had performed well in the previous two games. The Warriors weren't exactly careful with the ball either, committing 20 turnovers, but they did have 20 assists to go with it. Jarrett Jack led them there with 8 to just 2 turnovers.

The Kings shot absolutely abysmally from the field, making just a third of their shots (25-75) compared to 45.6% for the Warriors. Aside from Thomas, the only other Kings players in double figures were Marcus Thornton (12 points) and Jason Thompson (11 points, 7 rebounds). Jason Thompson (4-8), Chuck Hayes (3-4), Jimmer Fredette (1-2) and Francisco Garcia (1-2) were the only Kings with decent shooting nights. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 8 points but on an atrocious 2-10 from the field, and Tyreke Evans scored 8 on 3-13. Thornton and Thomas both shot just 3-9. For the second straight preseason game, John Salmons did not play, although I wouldn't read too much into that, it being preseason and Salmons being a veteran. Smart knows what he has there.

Update on Salmons from Jon Santiago:

The refs also handed out fouls like candy at Halloween, with a grand total of 63 being called. That's 1.3 whistles a minute. The Kings were the big winners here as they were able to keep the game close in the second half by getting to the line. Sacramento shot 35-42 from the stripe to just 17-27 for Golden State.

The Kings now head on to the road for their final four preseason matches, and will not play at Sleep Train Arena again until the Home Opener on Nov. 5, against these very same Warriors. The next preseason game will be on Friday at the Lakers, their first of three meetings with the Lakers this preseason.

If you attended tonight's game, observations are encouraged, either in the comments below or a FanPost.
