So Ive been a psuedo lurker over the past year or so on this site but Ive been a fan since the team moved here in '85. Im the typical longtime fan. Suffering through the many down years and enjoying the prosperous times. My aunt turned me on to the Kings. Of all the games Ive been to she either took me or got me the tickets to all but 3. I remember how happy she was I got tickets to game 4 of the 1999 playoffs. Ill never forget my first game she took me to. It was versus the Seattle Sonics, hows that for irony...another team that was moved, and was a hard fought victory for the Kings. I remember waiting outside Arco 1.0 after that game for players to sign a mini kings basketball which I still have.
Ive lived in Southern California since 1995. So attending games has been reduced to a game if the Kings are in town while Im visiting family for christmas. Until Sundays game vs Portland I hadnt been to a game for at least 3 years and it had been at least 6 years since I attended a game the Kings won.
So now I have a son and my aunt makes sure there is only 1 team he knows. Though hes only 4 my aunt has purchased him his fair share of hats, shirts and even has his own Slamson. We have tried to coordinate bringing him to a game and were unable to for various reasons. He attended the game on Sunday against Portland with us. We got tickets in the section where my aunt is a partial season ticket holder. We were there in time for the lineup announcements which was exciting for my son. I looked down at my son right before tip off and had one of those waves of emotion that only a parent knows. I couldnt help but want for him to have the same experience I had growing up. Going to games and creating memories that he will have for the rest of his life. He quickly picked up when to cheer. He got an ice cream, which Im sure was the highlight for him. He loves trains and would get excited when the sleep train sound would play after a Kings 3. He was looking intently for buddy the elf and slamson and would always make sure to point them out to us. William Zabka who played Johnny Lawrence in the Karate Kid, was at the game and set 1 section over from us. Really cool guy and was more than willing to take a picture with my son between the 3rd and 4th quarter. And to top the night off the Kings easily won. This night was filled with many memories
So what does all this mean? I dunno I root for the name on the front of the jersey. So god damnit the current owners need to either shit or get off the pot. And by shit I mean decide whether theyre staying leaving or selling. Yes I know that is the sentiment shared by most everyone on this board at one time or another but after my latest game experience I have a renewed resentment towards the current owners.
In the words of Clark W Griswold "Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like The current owners right here tonight. I want them brought from their happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want them brought right here, with a big ribbon on their head, and I want to look them straight in the eye and I want to tell them what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit they are! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?"
