This will not make Webber apologists happy

Grant Napear annoys me just as much as the next guy and gal, but he had every right to rip TNT for their irresponsibility last night. And, I'm sorry, but I was over Chris Webber's act 6 or 7 years ago, so forgive me for not wanting to relive the drama that follows him everywhere he goes. When has he *ever* been held accountable for his actions? Every time he does, he somehow twists things around and becomes the victim. The resolution to the b.s. from yesterday is to acknowledge your error and apologize. How hard is that? The only kind of person that can't make amends is a coward, and that is exactly what Chris Webber and the rest of the TNT broadcasting crew exuded: cowardice.

Again, I will be the last person in the world to blindly defend Grant Napear, but Chris Webber can now officially exit stage left. Go away.

35 and 31. I'm calling it now. Reke and Cousins 1-2 in most improved award both All-stars. Jimmer leads rookies in scoring, passing and Ole's. Make 2nd round of playoffs and Salmons is not here by seasons end.

And people wonder why Sacramento is still considered a cowtown

who thinks it’s a cowtown, where do you hear that? Everyone I know thinks it’s a government town.

This about the city counsel vote thing I'm assuming?

Honestly, that’s not really a big deal considering they live nowhere near Sacramento, and he did admit he got it wrong. Other than that all they did was gush about the city and fans, I thought it was a good telecast.

Yeah, I watched it and didn’t even know there was a problem. The Kings came out looking great and the crew more than once said that the league should not let the team move.

With all due respect,

if someone is a fan of Webber’s, you think that a dust-up with the Scarlet Douchebag is going to change their minds?

Agreed. And bonus points for the nickname "Scarlet Douchebag".

Grant can get way under anyone’s skin. I’m certainly not going to throw C-Webb under the bus for getting pissed at him, especially after all he’s done on and for the team.

I think

Grant said something to the effect of “what is with you guys at TNT not getting your facts straight…” in his typical ass manner.
And Chris took exception to that and seemed to get defensive with how Grant has treated him overall.
Honest mistake by C-Webb. Coward? No.

Grant’s a dbag and he got treated like one.

This ESC is still going to take a lot of work by KJ and crew, we should worry less about what the commentators bungled in the past and more what we can do to help our future.

I went ahead and flagged this as "Troll"

maybe it’s not actual trolling, but it sure as hell isn’t a Fanpost. This is weak ass comment buried 5 columns in a 300 comment thread at best.

"when young kids go to shootaround at the park, they shoot followay shots and buzzer beaters and pretend to be Kobe and Lebron…but what they don’t realize is that when they shoot more than 50 shots they are actually pretending to be John Salmons."

I might be out of line here, but I'm going to make a broad generalization.

Anyone that labels a person as an “apologist” for defending someone else is a douche bag.

This presupposes that even the “apologists” believe that Webber did something wrong but isn’t man enough to apologize for himself, so the “apologists” think that they need to apologize for him. That isn’t the position held by most people that would defend him, and I think you know that.

And also, I give points for Webber

For being so pissed off and not swearing, even once. If I was ticked off at Peaches after he ranted at me, there would be a few choice words thrown in there, albeit milder ones.

Webber was right to be outraged at Napier for Napier's unremitting

condemnation of him for what appears to be a genuine, innocent and unfortunate mistake most likely caused by the producers of the telecast who neither understood the vote nor explained it to the “talent” before broadcast. It apparently did not cross anyone’s mind that getting it bass-ackwards would touch a political nerve in Sacramento. But then, that’s TNT for you; the worst bunch of slobbering knuckledraggers on television. Grant at the very least got what he deserved.

At what level do you discount the surplus and benefit of good will?

For all of his picadillos and worse, Chris Webber is a key part of the Kings family. His jersey hangs in the rafters of the Sacramento arena. He is not immune from criticism, but as treasured part of Kings history he has earned and deserves every benefit of the doubt first and foremost. To deny him that is a slap in the face that did and should sting in a most hurtful way.

Chris Webber calls Sacramento his professional home. Home is where we go for comfort and understanding not disdain.

what

Asking for a correction on a random (and very unnecessary) mistake during an NBA broadcast isn’t quite in the same league as explaining why you wouldn’t go to authorities when you had good reason to believe one of your coaches was rapping children in the university showers? Hmmm.

My uh wut was for the guy above you

But if all sandusky did was rap in the shower, that would certainly have been weird and awkward but likely not criminal

oh sorry I know it was for the person above

and I would join in a laugh at my error if I didn’t feel so awful about the reality of it. But yeah I do suppose if he just liked to rap in the shower that’s not much of a crime.

Why is an apology too much to ask for?

Obviously paraphrasing but…

Should have got this:
“You know what, Grant, I need to apologize for our mistake last night. We were not completely aware of the situation and so we ended up misinterpreting the outcome of the vote. I can only speak for myself, and you know that I would never do anything like that intentionally. There is nothing more that I want than to see the Kings stay in Sacramento.”

Instead got this:
“Grant, how dare you make me out to be the bad guy! After all I’ve done for this city and for the Kings, why do you always focus on the negative! Kings fans, follow me on Twitter! Good night!”

Pfff… whatever. I’m still waiting for the apology.

That was my point

I did not make my original post to in any way diminish Webber’s contributions to really the only successful era of Kings’ basketball.
The point that may have gotten lost is that this was another case of Webber being incapable of taking responsibility for an action. And so it was right of Grant to ask him about this and for Webber to provide an explanation for the absolute laziness and irresponsibility of the whole TNT crew.
My second reaction to some of the responses to my original post is this: What does Sacramento owe Chris Webber? Chris Webber was a critical part of a great Sacramento Kings basketball team. That is undeniable. But Sacramento, as a city, has a life before and after Chris Webber, and if anything, Chris Webber owes Sacramento. This city gave him a chance and he took it, and for the most part, thrived while here (with some exceptions). So his whole act about being Sacramento’s savior is, quite frankly, nauseating.
Finally, for some perspective, were human lives lost in this TNT debacle? No, of course not, and so I don’t want to overreact and I want to keep this in context. However, this arena process is at such a delicate point that any emerging meme that could potentially work against us should be systematically and thoroughly dispatched. I think that also, as an aside, this debacle just highlights a broader problem with “journalism” today, the problem of course being that there is no more journalism in “journalism.” I digress…

I don't think a lot of people here heard the tape...

C Webb was definitely the antagonist here, I know we as kings fan have the jaded c Webb is amazing Napear sucks deal but honestly listen to it. I showed it to non kings fan friends and they think c Webb is way out of bounds here.. Unless of course so what’s up with you guys at TNT is such a wrong Q to ask, wording not the best? Yes. But c’mon now

I heard the tape this morning

I think Grant for the most part is a complete tool, however in this case I think Webber is in the wrong. He seems unaware that he did anything wrong and that we in Sacramento should be pathetically grateful for any mention or attention he gives the city of Sacramento. I don’t doubt the C Webb has great memories of his time here, I also thinks he wishes that the Kings stay in Sacramento.

But after saying he was in touch with the powers that be and he had the insides scoop he could not have been more inaccurate in describing the situation regarding the situation.

When Jodie Bacon contacted him I’m sure she made Webb well aware of why he had been asked to appear, for him to still misprepresent himself seemed odd. Its almost like all fans in Sacramento should be grateful for our one game on national TV. For once I’m with Grant, Kings fans deserved better

exactly, grant asked him a simple question. and C went off. and people are saying hes the victim here...

I'm not seeing a ton of "C-Webb's the victim" here

What I am seeing is that (a) Peaches is no innocent, and (b) there’s no need to throw out the Webber with the bathwater. For loss of a better word, I am seeing a call by many for some perspective.

Webber tweeted today...

My take on the setup – coming up on “The Chris Webber Show” SiriusXM Foxxhole 98 today @ 2pm – 4pm!

Is he talking about the incident with Peaches or something completely different? Too bad I don’t have Sirius.

by Tom A~! on Feb 14, 2012 12:09 PM PST reply actions

I think it's about Peaches.

I saw him tweet someone yesterday that asked him if he enjoyed his visit to Sac, and he said something like “I did! do you think i didn’t? Except I got set up by a whack radio host on a whack show”
