All Star Game in Sac?

This could be really far-fetched or just wishful thinking on my part, but assuming we can get a new ESC in Sacramento, could the NBA decide to reward us with an all-star weekend in the capital city? Obviously, there are a lot of things that would need to be a lot of other things to consider (not enough hotels to hold all the members of the press, etc.). But this relocation drama has gotten national attention, and I feel like giving Sacramento a media blitz to showcase its new arena would be an amazingly satisfactory ending. Almost too good to hope for? What do you all think?

If you build it, they will come.

By it, I mean arena/hotels. Look for something around 2017? 5 years is not too long to wait.

I would love to see some All-Stars playing on the court in Sacramento

preferably wearing Kings jerseys (last King to wear an All-Star jersey was #16, 7 seasons ago)

The issue was and is...

…hotels. The NBA requires at least a certain number of rooms within X square miles of the venue, and Sacramento never met that criteria. Of course, with a new arena and possibly more hotels than the time of the last estimate, might not be so far fetched. They could rent out all of LeRivage for that matter.

If Orlando can host an All-Star Game

So, too, can Sacramento. Just need a few more hotels…give it 5 years. Another boom is looming.

We can also look forward to the return of the NCAA Basketball Tournament…who knows, maybe we can even pull a regional final this time around.

Um, Orlando has a few tourist attractions that generate a fair amount of hotel traffic each year.

You know, 50 million, give or take.

You know, I think the Superbowl MVP has visited there once or twice.

I'm familiar

But the demographics are so uncorrelated that it doesn’t impress me much. Disney World should have little to do with NBA All-Star Game appeal. Now, in terms of hotel magnitude/traffic…sure.

I’d love to do study on how many of those 50 million visit anywhere near downtown Orlando…usually you hop right onto Rt. 528 and head to the resort, or you stay in Kissimmee. Orlando’s proximity is a bit of a coincidence.

This isn't about Disney World.

It’s about people needing someplace to sleep after they leave Disney World.

Orlando has 115,000 rooms available. The Sacramento Hotel Association cites over 5000 rooms available.

The issue of proximity to the arena is kind of beside the point. I don’t think people assume that they’re going to be able to walk from their accommodations to the event. Orlando and most other cities have us crushed in this regard. Sacramento just isn’t a tourism-based city.

I totally agree with all of that

We need to build some hotels, and we need some demand to do it first.

Our best bet will ultimately be to convince folks that this is the most efficient jumping-off point for wine country and/or Sierra exploration (if the region had any sort of a budget for national advertising of this kind, it would be money well spent…but we are a bit short on pocket cash at the moment).

Thanks for providing the actual disparity in available rooms…that is a mind-blowing differential!

over 5000 rooms available.

at 2 people per room that would be 10,000 fans, I’m pretty sure local residents could fill up the rest of the seats.
I’ll drive over and stay with my son if it’s necessary to free up one room :>)

Agree with your point. I am sure many of us at one time or another...

have gone to an area for a sporting event, conference, etc. where there is an inadequate amount of hotel rooms to accommodate the visitors. This is especially true if there are one or two big events which just happen to compete on the same weekend. Could be poor planning on the part of the City to allow this to happen. At least in Sacramento there are a lot of outlying cities which would gladly take the overflow. There are plenty of accommodations in the area to house everyone within a 40 minute driving distance, which no more than a morning commute for many of us.

I think and have often said

that Any NBA City that builds a new Arean should get the All-Star game within the first couple of years.

It just seems right and costs the NBA nothing.
