Kevin Love steps on Luis Scola's face.
I know this isn't directly related to the Kings but I did think it was newsworthy. It'll be interesting to see what kind of fallout there may be, it sure looks intentional to me.

Wow what a POS move. Love should get multiple games for this
and I would be shocked if he played against us on Tues, which is great news. We need to be able to beat Minn without their best player, but they do have a lot of weapons that can step up on any given night.

True but a second night of a back to back in Minnesota in February
I’ll take their best player being out. We need all the help we can get.
Maybe Kevin Love had shampoo on his foot
and was doing Scola a favor.

haha, not intentional
Just trying to get up court fast and he’s kinda clumsy.

DEFINITELY intentional.
If you look at it in slow-mo, he first kicks him then steps down. Not a natural motion at all. He was also looking at Scola right before it happened. Also, he doesn’t even look back or anything after the fact? Don’t you think if you “accidentally” kicked and then stepped on some dude’s face, you might look back and at least see what happened?

Not in a fast paced game with the ball heading the other way. Things look different in slo mo than in real time. If players had the luxury of playing in slo mo they would turn their ankles by stepping on other guy’s foot. Looked like there was a foul when love threw scola down though but maybe the refs just thought they got tangled up.

No.
If he cared at all, he would have kept hopping on his right foot until his left was clear. He was watching what he was doing…

Didn't look like a kick
But he definitely gave a little extra pushoff. Definitely a dirty play.

Just a little Love tap
More importantly, why can’t Scola stay on his damn feet?

People make cheap shots in a physical sport
and against people who nailed them in the nuts recently? Wow, who knew!
No doubt. But given what we've seen in the past, the commissioner needs to take action
At a minimum a fine, but really wouldn’t be surprised to see him suspended for a game or two as well.
Oh they have to do a suspension, they can't play around with it
I watched the game and listened to the announcers absolutely freak the heck out like they have never seen that type of stuff. That’s all I am responding to really. It was definitely dirty and he has to be suspended but just saying not really terribly shocking is all.
This kind of reminds me of the stomp to the face in college a couple years ago.
My stupid brain can’t remember the players or the teams involved, but I do remember Sportscenter doing a bit where they actually traced the stompers eyes. You could see that he looked directly at the stompees head, and then directly and conspicuously up before stomping.
This isn’t as egregious as that play but it does seem somewhat similar. Certainly you can tell that Love knows where Scola is about a second before the stomp occurs.

He knows scola is on the floor but love is leaning toward his own basket by then and just trying to get moving. If it was intentional he’d be concentrating on scola instead of the ball.Much like a border collie herding sheep he stays focused on the job at hand.

Agreed. I'm a bit surprised how many people are trying to let Love get away with the unintentional excuse. Every athlete who stomps on another player says something about just stepping down or they didn't see them or something.

and every guy throwing the ball at someone's nuts says they just were trying to save the play
cause they usually are. it’s a natural reaction to try and throw it off someone if you are going out of bounds and there’s no time to think about where to hit him , one just goes for the easiest area.Basketball played properly is too fast to think about other motives.

First of all, that was most likely unintentional, considering how often players hit other players in the balls when falling out of bounds and that he immediately went to help him up after and see if he was ok.
Second, EVEN if it somehow was intentional, it would still be a BASKETBALL play. I wouldn’t recommend throwing the ball off of someone’s junk because it is a bit unsportsmanlike, but it is completely within the rules and part of the game. That’s why you have to protect yourself in that situation. When someone is on the ground and you stomp on them, it is a completely different situation.
by vikinginferno on Feb 5, 2012 8:39 PM PST up reply actions
and all I'm saying
if someone threw a ball at your nuts and the next time you see them they are raking you and flopping all over the place and tripping you up, you might do something really stupid to send a message.
It’s absolutely a different situation. He should be suspended given it’s dangerous (I would actually suspend him a game if there wasn’t convincing evidence it was intentional). Having said that, don’t feel terribly sorry for Scola and don’t think much of it other than “go sit Love.”
but watching the replays, he looks down at him, then steps.
Don’t watch it in slo mo, watch it in real time. He looked and saw scola was on the floor but he didn’t have anywhere else to step as he was already leaning to move down court. Love is too focused on the game to wanna take time to stop and stomp the guy. Look at the previous play where he banged into guys going for rebounds , that’s just the way he plays with total abandon. Guys stepped on all the time but usually they are not laying down on the floor. Last year DLee got bit on the elbow and who thought that was intentional? Curry and Montay both got hit last game but no one claimed the kings were dirty.

And I don't think Love is dirty for knocking Scola down
But he saw him there. There’s no defending it. Accidental elbows and blows happen all the time. But not looking directly down at another player and making not effort to avoid stepping on them. If Love had hopped awkwardly on one foot and grazed Scola, then yes, I would agree. But he just planted his food down and made no effort to miss him.
here's Love's recap
“He was kind of right there. I just have size-19 feet. I had nowhere to go. It just happened to be his face, just like in Houston it happened to be my groin.”
If that doesn't tell you that he was bitter about Scola throwing the ball off his junk and he stepped on him intentionally, I don't think you would think it is intentional even if he said it outright.

he's getting a suspension regardless
that would set a bad precedent suspending a guy for being a clumsy klutz. Then you hafta suspend anyone who accidentally elbowed someone or stepped on their foot. Too many random contacts in a game to single one out just because the announcers make a big deal of it. The refs didn’t think it was a foul so respect their decision and move on.

it's not setting a precedent, you get suspended for stepping on a guy’s face
no you don’t if it’s an accident. I’ve stepped on lots of things playin ball and never been suspended. You can’t suspend a guy for not being able to avoid someone layin under his feet.
I’ve had guys bang me in the face with their elbow that I’d like to suspend but no such luck.If I fell down in a game under scrambling players feet I’d expect to get stepped on just like it wouldn’t surprise me if someone thru a ball off me trying to save their possession. I don’t like it but I know it’s part of the game.

It wasn't an accident. It's a great precedent.
Make not motion to avoid stepping on a guy you see on the ground and you get suspended.
It wasn't an accident?
Here’s the quotes from NBA website. They are saying the exact same thing I see on the tape.
" A Wolves spokesman said Love apologized to Scola in the Rockets locker room after the game.
"He was kind of right there, and you know, I’ve got size-19 feet," Love said. "So he just happened to be there, I had nowhere to go. I got kind of tripped up, and I just had nowhere to step."
Scola said he was more angry that Love wasn’t called for the first foul.
"I have no way of knowing," he said when asked if he thought it was intentional. "If it was intentional, they didn’t call it. At this point, I don’t care."

What do you expect him to say?
“I saw his stupid face and stepped on it in retaliation. I know this line will earn me a longer suspension, but it’s totally worth it. I hate Scola and now he’s got my footprint on his face.”
The way that NBA (and MLB) suspensions should work
The player should have to sit the next time that the involved teams play. He stepped on Scola’s face. If the NBA should deem this a suspendable offense, he should have to sit the next time these two teams meet.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
And what happens if they don’t meet again that season, would that be really fair? This is a punishment for players.
So now that it would be a precedent, all these top end teams could tell there players to do it to a lower tier team, where in the next game they wouldn’t necessarily need that player to beat em, and the players get to relax for a game.

Not sure if that's the best idea
you don’t want to start handing out suspensions as anything more than a punishment for the conduct. The last thing you want to do is start applying it as some form of retribution. Can lead to all kinds of trouble.
This was nothing like the Suh incident...
Scola clearly wasn’t trying to untie Kevin Love’s shoelaces.
"First we get jobs, then we get the khakis, then we get the chicks."
Scola does have a reputation as being a gentelman
So maybe when Love looked down Scola shouted “Hey Kevin, you have something on your shoe. Let me scrape it off with my face.”
people are looking over
the fact that in that game the refs weren’t calling anything at all (that is until they got word at a stoppage of play that they completely missed this) and it was getting really physical all around.
I didn't see the game, but how is that being overlooked?
From everything else you’ve said in this thread, I don’t believe you think that excuses what Love did. I believe you it was a physical, hard fought match. Just don’t understand how that element is being overlooked.
crap
sorry, I actually didn’t mean this as a response to what you wrote
