Once again, the NBA All Star Game starters have been announced, and once again I feel that the fans have gotten it wrong. In selected all stars, it is not about who is having the best season, it is about the most popular players in the NBA. No offense to Yao, but the only reason he made some of those all star teams was because the Chinese fans voted like crazy to have him in.
There really are a lot of great players, and it is a bit of a pity that not everyone can be starters, but such is the way in life. However, I truly believe that the players themselves need to select the all star starers, and leave something else for the fans.
The players themselves know who is truly playing good basketball and who is having a so-so year. Players like Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, or Lebron James could be having some terrible years, but will almost automatically be voted starters because they are the most popular, and people want to see them starting.
If the players were to vote, I bet this lineup would look a litte bit different. Perhaps Russell Westbrook would be starting instead of Chris Paul. Both have had fine years, and it would be interesting to see who would get the nod.
Marcin Gortat or Marc Gasol have also been playing well, and Andrew Bynum was still suspended for his flagrant foul to begin the year. I’m sure that would carry some weight with the players.
In the East, I doubt Carmelo Anthony would still be starting at the forward position. Greg Monroe and Andrea Bargnani have both been having great seasons so far, but the fans just do not look to Toronto or Detroit for starters, at least not right now.
Even though he has been injured, I feel like Bargnani has been slighted here. He has a higher PER, but with a similar point and rebound total, and plays for the Raptors! He doesn’t have much help there.
I don’t see this changing anytime soon, but I think the fans should have a little bit less to say in this.

We can only hope for them to play hard in the 2nd half, that’s what usually happens but not always and if it doesn’t we will lose by 20+. If we come strong in the 3rd and 4th we might win by a few points.
