Fox 40 calls out City Council! #GetItDone
CHECK THIS OUT: Fox 40 is trying to #GetItDone! Tonight their general manager came on the air and officially supported a new ESC in Sac. They called out the 4 city council members who are almost killed the ESC last night (especially Sandy Sheedy) and committed to airing commercials encouraging city leaders to get this done.
Will other local businesses follow suit?

I love the gesture
Although I have to laugh that they mixed up Darrell Fong and Robert Fong by showing Robert’s picture for Darrell at the beginning.

I suspect what some are saying about her is probably true.
She is a twisted piece of work. If this is all about her dislike for KJ, then just think of all the time and effort she has put into thwarting his efforts as a mayor. That is a lot of hate. This isn’t about the voters she is representing. If Sacramento doesn’t have the means to fund an arena, as she argues, then that will become apparent down the line regardless of the City Council’s vote. I hope this piece by Fox40 gives some transparency to her personal agenda. I don’t know what the other council member’s views are since they do not seem to be as available to air them.
So many people have worked for an arena, it would completely change the face of Sacramento, bringing vitality to the area, new jobs and prosperity; but this pompous self-inflated woman sits on her high horse, trying to keep the mayor from enjoying some success at the cost to everyone. She is a cancer that unfortunately got into a position, which provides her some power to pursue her personal agenda, no matter who it may hurt.
Yes, Harvey, she is a piece of work.

Was'nt Sheedys pole from last year full of speculation
and half truth’s? She looks like she is really sour , hard to get along with. Lets hope that last nights spot on Fox will be a smelling salt to the community and the other 3 council members.
I hope they're listening
because after the latest 5/4 surprise, my confidence is frankly shot. I went from being about 95% sure this gets done back to about 50/50%. That bad feeling is starting to come back to the pit of my stomach that this is still Sacramento and they’ll find a way to eff things up and torpedo this thing somehow in the end. Not trying to sound negative, that’s just my fear.

I haven't read any comments in the thread about the 5-4 vote, so maybe this has already been mentioned
but I wouldn’t be surprised if Pannell and McCarty had “pemission” from KJ to vote the way the did on the June ballot issue so they could have some political cover with their constituents while still allowing the arena plan to move forward. You see that kind of stuff all the time in politics, particularly in Congress, where each party essentially decides beforehand what the vote count will be like and divvies up the “yes” and “no” votes based on political implications for each individual member.
I know that Mayor Johnson would love for every vote around this to be unanimous, but ultimately it doesn’t matter and in the long run nobody will remember or care whether every vote was 9-0 or 5-4. Pannell and McCarty (and D Fong, for that matter) could still be persuaded to vote next week to move forward with the parking asset plan because at least they are then in a position to state to their constituents that they were willing to put it on the ballot, but that having failed they had to make their own decision on the plan. Forcing a vote to put it on the June ballot was a tricky way to get council members to “vote against democracy”, but I think we have to realize that the politics around that vote are very different than the politics around any further votes.

McCarty has always been pretty anti-arena.

The reason I (embarrassingly now) didn't vote for KJ the first time
was that due to the weak Mayor nature of the City Charter I thought Fargo was getting too much blame. That was both true and silly. Thankfully my wife balanced me out.
Sorry KJ.

Yeah, I don't think they discussed beforehand how they were going to vote
Pannell might have voted the way she did realizing that it wasn’t going to affect anything, but I doubt it was pre-meditated.

This vote was crucial.
I can’t imagine that KJ didn’t talk to some degree with each member (other than Sheedy and Fong) well before the meeting to get a sense of how it was shaking out. If it wasn’t looking like he had 5 votes, he would have been busting his ass to either flip one vote or prepare for the fallout of losing it. There may not have been any explicit “permission” requested or given, but I think the mayor knew exactly who the “No” votes were going to be and why, and I think he and his team are doing their best to carefully manage the politics of every vote the best they can.
The next vote is also crucial, and I’m sure KJ has already been all up on the other council members about their thinking on it. There is way too much effort going into this thing to let the council politics play out on their own. The only reason why this is all progressing differently than it has in the past is because of Mayor Johnson’s aggressive leadership on it. It just wouldn’t make sense for him to not be as aggressive with the political side (without being counterproductive) as he is with the business side.

I'm not so sure
He doesn’t seem to have a super great read on the pulse of the council given that he’s thought that he had just enough support in recent meetings to get his strong mayor agenda through. At the least he expressed that he had confidence in it passing. You also have to wonder how that initiative is now affecting this arena vote.
@dampania | Section 103 Row V
It serves two purposes for him, one being an exit door on the arena issue if it goes south
his reelection is already tied to the arena and the previous strong mayor initiative regardless so there’s no point in backing down at this point if he actually wants it still. If the arena stuff falls short he can grab the exit door saying “If only I had the strong major capabilities we could have stopped the gridlock in this city.” It’s his only real play to cover himself if the arena goes south. Would it actually work, personally doubt it but don’t really see what other way he can spin that defeat to his advantage.
by wallywagon11 on Feb 9, 2012 11:32 AM PST up reply actions
I'm not tuned-in to the strong mayor stuff at all, not being local anymore.
But, a double-failing of an ESC plan and a strong mayor plan would be a pretty depressing omen for the future of Sacramento as a legitimate city. If someone like KJ can’t overcome city politics to get big things done, I don’t have much hope for much positive change in that town for the forseeable future. We’ll have a Wal-Mart and a Bass Fishing Superstore at the railyards and the “cowtown” slander will be truer than it’s ever been. It’s particularly frustrating for me now that I can look at Sacramento as an outsider who has lived in a couple of other places around the country, to know that Sacramento really is a great place with amazing potential, if they could ever stop being so damn timid about risks or trying not to piss anyone off. It really is a great town that deserves great things.

That’s illegal
I would like to point out that “permission” makes it sound like the conversation was “Oh we got the votes, you can do now what you’d like to cover your butt.” That’s not the dynamics here if that is how you were thinking. Now, could he have a somewhat unofficial “staffer” who makes some back channel illegal communications with someone else’s “staffer” perhaps but no way he’d have enough control to give “permission.” If he really can only figure 4 votes though then yeah there might be some illegal negotiations or talks going on backchannel I suppose but not with those types of dynamics, much more of “shit what do you want I’ll give you anything you need.”
by wallywagon11 on Feb 9, 2012 11:27 AM PST up reply actions
It's illegal for the mayor to discuss matters before the city council with other council members?
My thinking was more along the lines of:
KJ: “Hi, Bonnie, what’s your sense on this ballot issue coming up”
BP: “It’s tough, because I don’t want to kill the ESC at this point, but I feel like my constituents would want me to vote ‘Yes’ on allowing them to decide”.
KJ (knowing he has 5 votes): “Yeah, that Sheedy is a sneaky punk. But you do what you need to on this vote, you know I’ll be voting against it and I hope that we’ll continue to be able to work on this as a council”.
…as opposed to how the conversation would go if KJ didn’t know that he had the 5 votes. If that were the case, I’d expect that he and his team would be doing whatever persuading they could. My point is that I can’t imagine KJ not being just as occupied with the city politics side of all this as he is with the business side, because I think he understands that none of the business efforts matter if the politics don’t play out the way that they need to. Then again, I haven’t been to any of the council meetings or feel like I have a good read on any of the members other than Sheedy, so maybe I’m just reading the dynamics the way that I am due to fear of the alternative. Because the thought that KJ isn’t being as aggressive as he possibly can to get the council to vote this thing forward is terrifying.

They aren't going to go to war with the league
he probably only gave the “no comment” because they’ve had talks about an extension if everything goes on track on February 28th.
Sickening
To actually believe there are people out there that do not support this arena deal. Glad to see there are additional voices and businesses stepping forward to make the final push. I am anxiously awaiting the vote next week to finally secure our team, in our region.
I also want to personally thank Sactown Royalty for being the go to regarding the arena issue as well as the members within this blog that have gone above and beyond to get this thing done. Final stretch, keep at it, you have the support of many more than it seems to be.
