Tyreke Evans... Is he still Sacramento's Savior? Yesterday's front page write up about the potential end of an era drew mixed opinions on what should be the fate of Tryeke Evans.
Many believe the sky is still the limit for this kid, while others question his desire and basketball IQ. Kings fans are tired of being in the cellar, and would like to see this team finally make that big step next season... but do we do that with or without Tyreke Evans?
Tyreke's rookie campaign was more than King's fans could have ever asked for. Tyreke won the ROY, and it finally looked like we had a superstar in the making, something the fan base has been desperate for. Tyreke's last two seasons, did not go as smoothly.
Was it the coach? Was it the foot injury? Was it the switch to SF? Was it a lack of desire? Was it the team? Questions, questions, questions.... Can he still be the superstar we want him to be? And if so, how much is it going to cost us? More than 4 years $42m?
I am still 50/50 on this Tyreke Evans trade. If you can move him for another star, sure why not. If you keep him, that's cool, as long as the price is right. My biggest issues are - the current starting lineup, and the potential cost of his contract. IT/MT23/Reke 1-2-3 is not my ideal lineup. I am very skeptical about Tyreke being able to play the SF position (well), mostly due to his lack of a jump shot. I would love to see him develop into an poor mans undersized Lebron type, but even that is a stretch (for me). Other than that I dont really know what kind of typical SF he would develop into (an Iggy who doesn't defend?). I think he would be better served at the 1 or 2, but I think IT and MT23 both play those positions better than him, so that doesn't really work (for me).
If we didn't have broke owners, I would say sure sign him, whats the big deal? But we dont, and every asset, and every dollar, is at a premium. So do we gamble with $10m+/yr on watching Tyreke try to learn the SF position? Or spend $10m+/yr to watch him move back to the 1 or 2, and have IT or MT23 become an underutilized 6th man? Or do we move him for someone similar in value, who already is very proficient at the SF position? Or do we just give up and trade him for a high draft pick??
This is a tough call. I want to believe he is worth the money, but with the Maloofs writing the checks, can we afford to guess wrong?
