I think back to all of the talent who once worked at KHTK and in one way, shape, or form covered the Kings/Monarchs, and I ask myself - How did KHTK let it get this far?
Think back at some of the talent that has come through here. Brian Wheeler is successful in Portland, Eric Hesseltine is broadcasting in Memphis and enjoying a nice playoff run. Jim Kozimor is at Comcast Bay Area. Frank Redd in my opinion had a hell of a show on Sunday Nights when he was allowed to participate - he was different and fresh, was deep in basketball knowledge, and a different type/theme of show never hurts. How many others did I miss?
Fast forward to this week. In what has to be the most ignorant decision they could have made from a timing perspective, KHTK has let go of Carmichael Dave. Yeah, that Carmichael Dave who could simultaneously be annoying and passionate, sophmoric and articulate, divisive and uniting.
It's your preogative to vilify CD, but he worked his ass off to get where he got going from caller to intern to fill in to talk show host. He was a true fan and never forgot where he came from. He cared about keeping the Kings in Sacramento and galvanized many in the community into action, building a formidable network in a short amount of time. Yeah, this former caller who broke into the business did not accept the inevitable and stood up to many corporate interests and somehow got a lot of people off their butts and very nearly pulled out a miracle, only to be crapped on by those interests at the last minute.
CD is now gone and we look to the future of KHTK, such as it is. They have Don Geronimo who will generate numbers. Dan Patrick is nothing more than a name-dropping joke, Jim Rome is on tape delay here in Sacramento and that speaks volumes as to how far his star has fallen. Grant Napear is the best of the bunch when it comes to sports knowledge, but has HUGE credibility issues (witness yesterdays rant vs. Sam Amick who rightly expressed his opinion on Twitter), and what the hell are they playing from 7PM to 5:30 AM? Is it too harsh to say that KHTK's programming is below average at best? Better question - will you listen to a station that has shows on tape delay, are borderline offensive, not allow you to get your point across about your own feelings on your own team and its management, and not offer a show with perhaps a dissenting opinion?
Many have said the voice of the fan is gone, but perhaps the question is - was it ever loud enough to get the attention of the Maloofs and KHTK in the first place? As passionate as we are, the answer is a clear and emphatic "NO!!!"
