There is only one player the Kings should covet above all else. We know Davis is gone at #1, MKG is probably gone at #2, Beal or Robinson will probably go at #3....all speculation till draft day but that scenario leaves Harrison Barnes and Andre Drummond. Now even though i would be happy with either as a Kings fan.....Drummond is who we should target and PRAY TO GOD WE GET.....and here is why.(obviously if he goes earlier, im completely fine with MKG, Barnes or Robinson...and in that order)
Drummond has "UNLIMITED UPSIDE". Scouts and NBA experts have indicated he could be the next Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, or even better. I even read somewhere that someone said he could be the best big man in the league for decades. They say a physical specimen like this guy with his "gifts" comes along every 10-20 years. So with that said, what do the Kings have to lose.
I see two scenarios
Scenario A: Drummond lives up to the expectations everyone has of him and he and Demarcus become the best 4 and 5 combo in the entire league after 2-4 years of development and dominate for the next 10 years. The Kings become perrenial playoff contenders with two of the most talented big men in the Western Conference.(Thnk Robinson/Duncan, Parrish/McHale, Charles Oakley/Patrick Ewing....except Ewing and Oakley all those guys won titles) Oh and by then, Dirk, Nash, Kobe, Gasol, and Duncan all are likely retired. We also get to call them 'The Double Ds of Destruction".....now who doesnt like that moniker. Finally who wouldnt want to hear Napear yelling " ANNN DRAAAAYYY DRUMMOND!!!!!!!!" followed by a comment by Reynolds that completely kills the moment.
Scenario B: He becomes Kwame Brown/Olowakandi/Greg Oden/Hasheem Thabeet PART DEUX and the Kings are exactly where they are right now. Think about it, our worst case scenario is where we currently are at anyway. He becomes a bust which is a common occurrence with this team and fans are terribly disappointed. However, he was the fifth pick so no one really cares.
Petrie might as well be a river boat gambler, say "f' it", and take Drummond. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
