Draft time has been one of the most exciting times of the year for Kings fans for the past 4, 5, 6, 7.... for a few years now unfortunately and this year looks to be the same. Their is some very good prospects available around our pick and I believe we will come away with a player who will contribute immediately, while having the potential to be a stud on the team for a long time... at least 4 years until the renewal of the contract becomes neccessary and The Maloofs have a powerpoint on why the player doesn't make sense for the team or the city. Anyways, I would love for Thomas Robinson, MKG, or Anthony Davis to slide a few slots because of red flags, but let's face it, Those are the top three picks in the draft. I'm going to break down the 3 players I feel should be worthy of being the 5th in the draft by the Sacramento Kings.
Let me first say that we have to figure out what were going to do with Tyreke Evans. A great talent like him has to either be the 2nd fiddle star or traded for a more complimentary player with roughly the same value. I can think of 3 players who I would trade Reke for and in my opinion be good for all parties involved; Derrick Williams, Danilo Gallinari, Rudy Gay, but any trade involving more salary coming this way is a no no, bad for the city and the team. If he stays Thornton has to come off the bench and Salmons, ( our heftyist contract), becomes a backup 3/2, Terrence Williams most likely isnt back, and Garcia needs to lift more weights on an excercise ball and hopefully break his arm. Why do we have so many 2 guards?
Harrison Barnes is a perfect complimentery wing to Tyreke Evans, if the Kings keep Tyreke I believe he should be the wing selected if a wing is selected. Barnes was over-rated a bit at first but now I think he is a bit under-rated as a top prospect. Harrison will never be a super star but I like to call players like him superstuds. They do what there coaches ask, play hard, play within their abilities, and don't seem like ego-maniacs. He will eventually be a knockdown shooter, good scorer, a decent/good defender, and seems to have leadership abilities. The skills that he does not posses right now are shot creation, Explosive first step, creating for others, and he's not much of a rebounder. Those weaknesses are not something you like to see in a top five pick but I think our team as is can overcome them. Let me know if 1 of you think I am way off base.
Terrence Jones is a special talent who really gets overlooked, partly because he played on a star studded team while also playing 3rd fiddle, albeit extremely well. If the team decides to go in another direction by trading Reke, He is the small forward I want playing next to MT23 and IT2. He's got great size, very good rebounder, very good defender, can create his own shot a little bit, and can knock down a few jumpers. Essentially, he's everything we want Donte Greene to be. He's not a great scorer but With MT23, Jimmer, Cousins I dont think we really need that. A few things he's been bashed for are bad body language, not as aggressive as he should be, not a great shooter. I think he's worthy of the pick.
Now to Andre Drummond. What can I say, He can be Dwight Howard or Kwame Brown. I really dont like picking players who didnt produce in College but He has that "P" word attached to him. His potential is off the charts, he's an athlete, a shotblocker, and sort of a rebounder. To be Honest, I think any big playing with Cousins is going to look better than they really are. If he comes this way, He is going to need major developing but he can still contribute right away in my opinion. You know what though, we have nothing to worry about if Drummonds the guy because The Kings have their very own developer, He's developed alot of stuff, and you can trust him. He's part owner, part developer, while also running part (2%) of the Palms, Theres no way we can go wrong with this guy on our side.
