With my excellent subscription to ESPN Insider, I have access to the exceptionally valuable and insightful "Rumor Mill". While looking at it today, I saw this blurb on Al Harrington:
"New Magic forward Al Harrington is signed through 2014-15 (three more years) and sounds hopeful of staying in Orlando, but Brian K. Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel speculates today that he "likely will be dealt this season or next summer in rebuild plan."
This got me thinking about a trade that could be mutually beneficial for both teams - and yes, it involves Al Harrington.
Sacramento gets: Al Harrington, Hedo Turkoglu, Moe Harkless
Orlando gets: Jason Thompson, Francisco Garcia, Jimmer Fredette
The trade wouid have to wait about three months until Jason Thompson's trade restriction period ends, but this could be a mid-season deadline deal.
The benefit I see for both sides:
Sacramento: We get a veteran PF in Harrington that can step out and knock the three down consistently, and a different type of player than Thomas Robinson. He would be willing to come off the bench if TRob is ready to go, as he's done throughout his career. I know 3 yrs at $21M left on his contract is kind of a stretch, but I think he can be worth it for two if not three of those years, and we can always look to trade him in year 3 to rid ourselves of his expiring contract. Hedo is a Sacramento favorite, and a guy that still can fill up the stat sheet and provide some value. And Moe Harkless could end up being the SF of the future for our Kings. He's young at a ripe age of 19, big at 6'8, which would complement our frontline, and can rebound (he averaged 8.6 rebounds per night at St. John's).
Orlando: First off, with the Magic being in full rebuilding mode, it would make sense to unload Hedo (2 yrs) and Al's (3 yrs) contracts. Yes, they would take on Francisco for the next 2 years, but it would be much less than what they would have paid Hedo. In the process, they would get Jason Thompson, a young formidable 4-man, and Jimmer Fredette, a backup and possible future replacement to Jameer Nelson. In conjunction with their youth movement, I think grabbing JT and the Jimmer would be smart.
I have nothing against Jimmer or JT, I just believe that it would make more sense to add a PF with a different game than TRob's, along with two strong SF's (one old, one young).
Go ahead and blast me, but I think it's semi-logical.
