I have already grown tired of all the posts about the Maloofs and their insanity. I follow the team because I love Kings basketball and all I needed to hear was Stern say it would be sorted out at the owner’s meetings, so any news from here on out on that issue are just rumors and will constantly change so why bother.
More relevant to basketball is the looming Trade deadline. This particular deadline is one I look forward to and fear at the same time. I look forward to it because there are so many teams that seem like they are primed to make big moves and I really believe we have a lot of good pieces to bargain with. Look at the teams that are heading in the wrong direction that have GM’s that are known for making bold moves. Ainge with the Celtics, Dallas, Lakers, Even Memphis has a lot of rumblings. This team needs a veteran leader and it seems to me we can pry a good one away and still keep a good core of young players. Our team can improve dramatically if we play our cards right.
Why I dread the trade deadline is we have Petrie still as GM. This is the guy that gave a first round pick for half a season of Hickson. The same Hickson that Portland is looking to now trade for a decent pick or player. This is the GM that has made bad trade after bad trade for years now. He gives away talent for undersized bench players. If can’t trade for them he signs them (see Chuck Hayes). I fear what moves Petrie might make with Tyreke. How crazy would we all be if Petrie traded Tyreke to the Celtics for Fab Melo and Avery Bradley? I would be beside myself. It’s not too late to get a GM that would make bold and creative moves. It won’t happen, to get someone competent in charge is not the Maloof way.
So we enter the trading period with a maniac behind the wheel. It’s that crazy uncle who used to drive crazy but it would be fun because his reflexes were good and his eyesight was 20/20. But we’re nearly twenty years removed from the Webber trade and that crazy uncle still drives crazy but his reflexes are slow and his eyesight is gone. It’s thrilling in a completely different way! Perhaps on his last drive (Uncle Petrie will not be driving again after this season) he will just get lucky and make it home alive. Something tells me he is going out with a bang, I just don’t know if it will be something fantastically awesome or fantastically awful.
What say you? What moves do YOU THINK will happen, and what moves do you DREAM will happen. Two different things. I look forward to talking basketball once again!
