Mustache Update: StR Community Raises $415 in One Week

Last week I wrote a fanpost calling all StR fans to join me in raising money for Sacramento and San Francisco Schools in need. I selected schools with high poverty populations that had projects that were totally unfunded. Thanks to some extremely awesome StR readers, a few fantasy basketball enemies, some friends and family of mine and one crazy ass martial arts studio, I've been able to raise $2160 in about 10 days.

$415 of this came directly from people I have never, ever met. I knew I needed to bring this here, though, and I'll tell you why: Kings fans really are the best. Truly.

When I first decided/was tricked into/accidentally agreed to grow a mustache and then go around begging people for money, I was mortified. Besides the fact that I don't get along well with facial hair, I don't like asking people for money. I don't. I know that some people out there are just fed up with "donations" and the non-stop barrage of needs that our society has. But something happened.

I signed up for the "SF Growers" Mustache campaign and was setting up my giving page with projects in need of funding at my children's school. There were three and all looked almost funded so I searched for other schools in SF and was able to apply a "high poverty" filter. Suddenly I found a multitude of needs: a rug for the floor, chairs to sit in, pencils and clipboards... I added in Sacramento to my filter. One class wanted to go to a museum for the first time in school history, another needed basic supplies, one needed storage cubbies... as you know, the list goes on and on.

I decided to go all out and see what I could do. Immediately StR came to mind as a place to start. I dug out my signed Shareef jersey (the only piece of Kings memorabilia likely worth anything at all...OK it's not worth shit but it's still cool!) and whipped up a dumb fanpost. The response, though not huge, was overwhelming in its sincerity and heart.

On top of that kfipp and Aykis16 hooked me up with a little extra StR help via twitter and by front-paging my post (against the wishes of the curmudgeonly section214 - this may or may not be a joke, section is one tough read).

I joined twitter and tried to tweet connected Sacramento Kings types like Boogie, Carmichael Dave and Leslie Moore which in the end was depressing. If anything, someday I may be able to write a book called Twitter: You're Doing it Wrong

So in two weeks, when this is all over, I will send this jersey to you, Kings fan out there with the biggest donation. I would send you so much more...but not my bobble heads!

I'm going to wrap up this thing up with BIG UPS to the following StR heroes who gave some lootcakes to the cause...

Kfan in Korea, adamsite, otis29, LaBradford, djrick, polotown and the mysterious Gunrock - you guys are the bomb!

I'd also like to give a shout to Paresh Martial Arts in San Francisco. The owner and my kids' instructor, Kristina Ohlson, blew me away with a cool $1000 bucks this morning which about doubled my whole total. Unbelievable. That donation fully funded 3 projects, 2 of which were in Sacramento. Plus there was $30 left over that went to a Placerville school!

I'll send any future updates in the comments section including the winner of the 'Reef jersey and a couple terrifying glimpses of what my mustache looks like as threatened. The pick above is from yesterday.

Let's do this Sacramento!!!
