In an attempt to free up cap space moving forward, the Minnesota Timberwolves have made Derrick Williams and Alexey Shved available and put them on the trading block. While Shved i'm not too high on, Derrick Williams i am very high on. I know many people are writing him off as a bust, but David Kahn drafted him a few years back and then a new GM comes in and clearly doesn't see the same in him as Kahn did. Also, as we know, Derrick William's isn't the kind of guy the Rick Adelman loves to play. He can shoot and is athletic and can slash really well, but he doesn't flourish at the things Adelman likes.
That said, how would you guys feel about making a move to get him? He would be somewhat of a rental as i believe his contract expires after 2014 where we could let him become a restricted free agent. He has a great shooting stroke, possesses great size at the SF position at 6'9, has elite level athleticism and plays with a high level of energy. I know that anyone would be an upgrade for us at the SF position, but i really think Williams can develop into a nice young player. Not to mention he can play the 4 for us in certain situations where he would be a huge mismatch.
I envision him being a high level slasher, being able to hit open jump shots, and can put the ball on the deck to create in a pinch. His ball handling needs the most help as he isn't a very adept dribbler, but we don't need a point forward. I think he can be had on the cheap. What do you guys think?
