First time poster, long time reader. I just had this idea and I thought it was maybe good enough to share. If others agree, perhaps the NBA would take notice. I sent the following letter to the NBA:
Hello,
I am an NBA fan, but my zealousness for the league is not what it once was for a variety to reasons (I'm a Kings fan), none of which is particularly relevant in this message.
When I watched the league religiously, I used to get excited for All Star weekend because I thought the events were exciting and while I can't put my finger on it, the events just don't excite me like they used to and that seems to be more of a trend than just a personal opinion. Not even the slam dunk contest seems to excite people like it once did, sans maybe Blake Griffin's recent involvement.
I just came across highlights from the 2012 All Star Basketball challenge and it was great to see some of my former favorite players lacing it up one more time and playing together again. I grew up on Mitch Richmond, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Jason Williams and others. So a thought occurred to me: wouldn't it be great to see nba legends do this on a regular basis during All Star weekend? But who would they play?
Personally, I think the Rookie vs. Soph game is a snooze-fest mostly because nobody cares about sophomores in the league. They aren't new anymore. But what if every year, the top rookies faced off in a game against all the legends they grew up watching and emulating?
A rookie vs. legends game would be the ultimate game of skill and experience vs. youth and athleticism. Can Pippen, Rodman, Shaq, and Gary Payton take out the games best young rookies in one, winner-take-all game? I'd love to know the answer to that. I'd love to watch that.
I hope you give this idea sufficient thought. I think it would be a huge draw for the weekend.
Thanks.
I would love to hear your feedback STR.
