Kings final score: Spurs brush off Sacramento challenge 108-102

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Isaiah Thomas scored 22, but the Kings couldn't rebound in the closing minutes and fell to the league-leading Spurs.

The Sacramento Kings had a horrible shooting night against the San Antonio Spurs, but somehow found themselves within three in the final minute. But an inability to rebound late and a critical blown coverage on Tony Parker ended any hopes of a massive upset as the Spurs improved their league-best record with a 108-102 win.

The Kings trailed 103-98 with two minutes, and actually forced two misses ... but couldn't get either rebound. That allowed the Spurs to drain time off the clock. Jimmer Fredette gaffled the ball from Tony Parker with a minute left and fed Marcus Thornton for a lay-up to close the gap to 103-100. But the Kings needed more stops. They got Kawhi Leonard to miss a three ... but couldn't pick up the rebound. On the second opportunity, the Kings blew a switch and Parker got free for a lay-up. The gap was then five with 19 seconds left, and that's all she wrote.

Ironically, the Kings were only in the game because of their rebounding and lack of turnovers. Sacramento shot terribly, just 38 percent from the floor (.428 eFG). Isaiah was the only guard who shot at a respectable clip (22 points, 6-10 FG, 8-8 FT). The other combined to shoot 16-47 (34 percent), though Tyreke Evans did end up with 20 points on 19 shooting possessions thanks to 7-8 FT shooting and Marcus Thornton did go 4-9 from long-range. (He shot just 6-16 from the floor, but those threes helped him get to 16 points on 16 shots.) The Kings only turned the ball over 10 times; the Spurs committed 17.

Jimmer Fredette played 20 minutes, for those keeping track. Thomas Robinson played just 10.

The Kings are now 19-36 overall and 14-13 at home. They begin a five-game road trip on Friday at Atlanta.
