It looks very likely that the NBA will be presented with two viable, competing proposals. One from Sacramento and one from Seattle. Rather than a fight between 2 deserving cities, why not create a pathway to a WIN-WIN solution, namely expansion. Expansion solves multiple issues, it avoids a messy fight, and saves the League from having to make a hard decision. Even if the NBA denies relocation , will the Maloof's really negotiate with Sacrmento.
Most comments to date on expansion say that we keep the Kings and Seatlle gets an expansion team. The alternative for us (Sacramento) to get an expansion team. I personally like the idea of an expansion team in Sacramento for several reasons. Foremost amoung them is that I simply don't like the Kings team, not the players (excepting Thomas, JT and Jimmer), not the way they play, and not the fact that they are the Maloofs team. The fee for an expansion team would be less, enhancing the prospects of a Sacremto deal for a team and a new arena. Starting over fresh is appealing: new team , new name, new arena. Sure the team would not be great at first, but neither are the Kings.
By going to the NBA and saying we'll pay the fee for an expansion team and build a new area, we present them with a solution to what is otherwise a vexing problem of choosing between Sacramento and Seattle.
