Amidst relocation rumors and end of the season stresses one thing has become clear and that is if the Kings stay or go Keith Smart most likely wont be asked to come back to either city. Although Smart has made many questionable decisions and at times spoke as if he is watching basketball for the first time (such as saying Demarcus is bad with his basket to the hoop and should primarily be a stretch bigman), you only fire a coach if you think you have a better replacement. And when it comes to coaching vacancies in my mind there is one person and one person only who should take the job if interested.
Despite being possibly the most recognizable assistant in the NBA, Mike Budenholzer is shockingly under the radar to the average basketball fan. Hugging the hip of arguably the greatest basketball mind ever in Gregg Popovich for 17 years, Budenholzer has been Pop's right hand man for the duration of the Spurs Championship runs, and has been a key piece in the adaptations the Spurs have made countless times. He has established himself as an equal to a coach who has none in Popovich.
Despite applying countless times for head coaching positions in the league, Budenholzer is consistently a finalist never the choice. However there is no denying the possibility of him being the next Tom Thibodeau shock to the average NBA fan.
Budenholzer might be the most overly qualified, non head coach in the NBA but that isn't why Sacramento should hire him, they should hire him for the possible mirrors both the Spurs and the KIngs have as franchises. They are both small markets, relying on the draft and building sub par players into subtle game changers. In the Kings glory days they built a team that was highlighted by all stars but glued by the bench and players who reached there potential. The Spurs have done the same but over a decade opposed to a couple of years and Budenholzer has been a key reason why that success has been sustained.
At this point Budenholzer might be looking at the head coaching seat that he has been sitting next to for so long, considering Pop's days might be numbered but if the Kings still have an ounce of intelligence left in them they would do whatever it takes to get Bud in the door. He cant be worse then the the last five.
Still suggest any other coaching options that might be able to turn around this kingdom. Or even if you think Smart should stay in the comments below.
