I was born and raised in a small town in Alaska called Fairbanks. Back then there were about 35,000 people in the area and we had very little in the way of sports to follow. Goldpanners Baseball was about it. Certainly we enjoyed watching up and comers Dave Winfield, Tom Seaver, Graig Nettles & later Barry Bonds, but after summer not much else to do. Except... watch the NBA on our 2 tv channels (no cable). I admit at the time I was a huge Lakers
fan, but this wasnt Kobe & Shaq, not even Magic
& Worthy. No, this was West, Goodrich & Chamberlain. But they got old, father time caught up with them and I lost interest in the NBA for about 10 years.
Then in the middle 80S I got married and moved to Sacramento. My employer was a huge Kings
supporter ( still is) and used to give tickets to Kings games & we went whenever we could. I was a fan again in a big way, as this was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
Well, kids came along & eventually we realized that we could not save enough to purchase a home for our young family & we decided to move back to Fairbanks in 92.This was not a happy move for me. It felt like I was saying goodbye to a good friend forever.
Since then the kids have grown and I have learned that forever is a long long time.
Over my lifetime I have heard many promise that they would give their best effort,& most of those were broken promises.
The citizens & fans of Sac can be very proud of the political, financial efforts & faith of KJ Ron, Vivek, Mark & all those involved in the current bid to retain the Kings in Sac. You truly have a wonderful city , one to be envied by many in the country. How refreshing it is to see a politician make a promise & follow through with all his being.
You also can be extremely proud of Ziller, Aykis, Weis, Kfipp & others for making STR accessible, informative, educational, entertaining & thought provoking.
I would like to thank the many posters here at STR who have shared their insights, including but not limited to A68(for keeping me grounded) JLV (for allowing me to soar) pookey & prowse & the many others who I dont always agree/disagree with but know that its all in the spirit of being a true fan in the best sense of the word.
This is not a Seattle vs Sacramento post, as I believe this will be one of, if not the most difficult & complex decisions the NBA has ever had to make. I believe that both cities have incredible strengths known, debated & argued by all who come here.
This is not a goodbye letter either, but rather a hello letter, a Thank you to you all, regardless of the outcome of all of this.
Im nearer to the end of my career than the beginning & my thoughts have turned towards retiring.I have decided on a place in the area that will allow me to return to my good friend Sacramento, and I am looking forward to sharing many regular season games, playoffs,Championships,All Star games & much more with all of you in the new DTP arena in the coming years and forever.Because I have learned that forever is a long, long time
