This is it. Tomorrow we'll know. We all know that the final vote is at least 7 days later, but tomorrow we'll know.
We'll know if we get to keep our team. Finally.
And I hope with every cell in my body that the Sacramento Kings stay the Sacramento Kings.
And I'll be thrilled to hear the great news. I'll be proud of everyone who stepped up to make this happen. To save this team, back when it was so bleak two years ago that Napear cried on TV because he knew it was over. But it wasn't then and it still isn't now. I'll be proud of our mayor who showed what it means to never ever give up. I'll be proud of Carmichael Dave and everyone involved in the grass roots efforts. I'll be proud of everyone who stepped up to show the NBA that Sacramento is not just some other city. I'll be proud of Burkle. Proud of Mastrov. And proud of Ranadive who all stepped up when we needed them to.
But in spite of all that, we all know it might not go our way tomorrow.
But I'll tell you this. No matter what happens tomorrow, I'm just as proud to know that we left it all on the field. We gave it our best shot. There will be no "If only we had done this or that." There is nothing else we could have done.
If they take our team tomorrow, it will be a very sad day. But everyone who stepped up should hold their head high no matter what happens tomorrow. Because we can all take pride in the fact that we stepped up big time. We showed the NBA how a city and its people can mobilize against ridiculous odds.
I was at the game on April 17. I screamed until I had no more voice. I hope it wasn't my last time going to a Sacramento Kings game.
But if it is, I'll never forgot how we all pulled together like never before.
So no matter how it goes tomorrow, I have a lot of pride, but no regrets.
I'll wear my purple shirt to work tomorrow. I'll write "SAC-RA-MEN-TO" in large letters on the white board in my office. I'll hit the refresh button on my computer about 500 times.
I may be thrilled. Or I may be crushed. But I'll be proud no matter which way this goes. And I hope every one of you will be too.
