In Vivek we trust: on Ranadivé's endorsement of Pete D'Alessandro as Kings GM

USA TODAY Sports

Pete D'Alessandro was introduced as the Sacramento Kings' new GM on Monday. But the most reassuring words came from his boss.

Pete D'Alessandro said a lot of things on Monday. At the press conference introducing him as the new general manager of the Kings (see the video here), he unveiled himself as a real talker, as someone totally earnest about his job and the team's goals. He was a bit awkward and in ways pretty funny, but this is a huge moment in his career and no one will blame him for being nervous. (Also, there was a birthday cake, because it was Pete D.'s birthday. This franchise is becoming amazing fast.)

D'Alessandro said a lot of important things: about having a small but diverse staff, about the importance of analytics and technology, about avoiding building an echo chamber, about leaning on Michael Malone's presence at recent draft workouts when the choice is made next week. But I think the most important thing said at the press conference came from Vivek Ranadivé himself.

When I evaluate people to join my team, I ask three questions - who's the smartest guy in the room, who's the hungriest and who's the most passionate? In the final analysis, there was one name that stood head and shoulders above all others, and that was Pete.

When I hear an endorsement like that from someone as successful, eloquent and smart as Vivek, I don't need to hear about Pete D.'s experience, expertise or other endorsements. That's all I need to know: that this guy blew Vivek away. Right now, that's plenty enough for me.

The fact that Pete D. also has endorsements from Chris Mullin, Larry Coon and Masai Ujiri doesn't hurt. But he is smart enough to blow away a guy who surrounds himself with some of the smartest people in Silicon Valley. I'm on board.
