I'm writing this at 12:30am local time. I just finished being part of SB Nation's coverage of Game 7 of the NBA Finals. I read that previous sentence and I'm in awe. I got to make jokes on Twitter and help cover a hugely important game. And the game was amazing. The post game celebrations and interviews were amazing. The NBA is amazing. I love it all. And then I realized that we reached the official end of the 2012-2013 NBA season.
The draft is just around the corner, followed by free agency and Summer League and the preseason. The NBA is a beautiful machine that never stops. But this season is over. And my oh my what a year it has been, especially for Kings fans.
It feels like years ago that we were squabbling with the Kings organization about FTM night and training camp credentials. When we were signing Aaron Brooks and drafting Thomas Robinson. When Jason Thompson was given his new contract. And then we were thrust into the realm of "Virginia Beach can't possibly be real, right?"
And just as quickly as the Virginia Beach threat went away, the Seattle threat became all too real. So much of the past year was lost to off-the-court concerns. Seattle consumed us from January til June. Just a colossal concern.
And now we have our happy ending. We're looking at 35 years of stability. We have a new ownership group, an exciting head coach, and an exciting new GM. We're shedding the baggage that we've had to carry for so long and finally looking forward with a real sense of optimism.
It was a horrible year to be a Kings fan, but it might also be one of the best. For me, as a basketball fan and basketball writer, this past year has been the best I've ever experienced. And now we can look forward to more. I'm amazed and thrilled with the response to the Sactown Royalty Show, and can hardly wait to record each new episode.
I'm excited to experience the upcoming season as normal fans. To devote our time to discussions of the players, coaches, and match-ups. I can't wait. We had a tremendous season, and things are only looking up from here.
