Free agency officially begins at 12:01 a.m. Monday. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the New Orleans Pelicans have secured a face-to-face meeting with Kings restricted free agent Tyreke Evans soon after the free agency period opens.
The Pelicans have a good chunk of cap space, even after trading for Jrue Holiday on Thursday. What the Pelicans don't have is space in the backcourt: along with Holiday, New Orleans has Eric Gordon on a max contract as well as solid young point guard Greivis Vasquez. The Pelicans could attempt to work out a sign-and-trade with Kings to guarantee they don't lose Evans, if they can find the right number for him. If the Pelicans sign Evans to an offer sheet, the Kings will have the opportunity to match, potentially leaving N.O. striking out.
if a sign-and-trade is in the cards, Vasquez might make the most sense for both sides. Gordon is pretty similar to Kings' draft pick Ben McLemore.
Word is that Evans is in Los Angeles to take meetings. The Kings' front office is due in Sacramento Monday morning to introduce the two draft picks to the media.
