Tyreke Evans trade: Withholding judgment until the next move

USA TODAY Sports

Tyreke will reportedly be traded to the Pelicans for Greivis Vasquez and Robin Lopez. The Kings still don't have a passable starting small forward. What's next?

I should really have a strong opinion on the reported trade sending Tyreke Evans to the Pelicans for Robin Lopez and Greivis Vasquez. Evans has been the Kings' best perimeter player for four years, and had the franchise's best rookie season in Sacramento history. When he arrived, he was a legit star. Things went less well for the following two years before he found his lane as the team's starting two-guard, as a versatile, smart player in 2012-13.

Now, he's gone.

The Kings still have plenty of cap space after picking up Vasquez ($2.1 million) and Lopez ($5.1 million) -- just under $10 million in cap space remaining. (So yeah, Andre Iguodala is definitely out barring a trade of a Kings player or a sign-and-trade with Denver.) But more than that, I just don't think Pete D'Alessandro is going to let this be the final major move of the offseason. The point guard situation is now pretty out of control -- Vasquez and Isaiah Thomas are both potential starters, and hopefully Ray McCallum can be a rotation option in Year 1. Without Reke, the two-guard is a bit gnarly too: you have a young rookie in Ben McLemore, who at this point might be backing up Marcus Thornton. Small forward remains a gaping hole. If the Kings keep Lopez, you have five rotation big men led by DeMarcus Cousins, Jason Thompson and Patrick Patterson. (Chuck Hayes could sneak in there, of course.)

If Iguodala is really off the table at this point, Pete D. may look at the trade market to acquire a new small forward. Andrei Kirilenko is the other big name free agent, and one assumes he'd sign for $10 million or less. But he's also older than Iguodala and not renowned as a locker room leader. So we'll see.

If New Orleans does stick Evans into a Manu-type role, I'm really excited to see how it works out. I've long thought that'd be a great role for him, but it never would've worked here due to lack of talent.
