My hate for Bill Walton started around 2000. I remember him announcing Kings-Lakers games and being frustratingly biased. Of course, Bill was behind the 8-ball already with his putrid-playing son Luke and my hate for the Lakers. Shaq this, Kobe that - disparaging comments about the Kings. I couldn't stand the guy!
My hate started in 2000. But it ended a decade later. When Bill signed with the Kings in 2010, I decided to give him a second shot. Upon going back and watching "The Greatest Tragedy in Sports" on YouTube, I realized Bill wasn't as biased as I remembered. He did notice Shaq's blatant fouls and Kobe's elbow.
Before he started announcing for the 2010-2011 season, I was mostly indifferent once again. But once he started announcing, I loved him! Bill Walton is fantastic!! Now some disclaimers:
- Yes, he says some stupid things.
- Yes, hyperbole is his middle name.
- No, I'm not sure he knows what he's talking about.
- No, there's nothing wrong with a big man taking a charge.
- I think Grant and Jerry are the best announcers in the league.
- I could not care less for the Grateful Dead.
But Bill is entertaining. He is captivating. When he speaks, I listen. To every single word. Not because he's a basketball wizard, not because his color-commentating skills, but simply because the man is a fun life-loving master of entertainment. There is no one else like him.
I will legitimately be disappointed is Bill Walton does not announce some games this year. I watch every Kings game. I love Grant and Jerry. But having Bill pop in every 10 games of so makes my
"But Bill Walton doesn't know what he's talking about about". Yeah, well that doesn't mean you do. Get over yourself and let's welcome Bill back!
