7th 5th 7th and now 8th, the Sacramento Kings will have now selected in the top 10 of the NBA draft in all four years since making DeMarcus Cousins the face of their franchise. Although it was just made official with the 4yr 62million dollar extension he received it was long understood that Cousins would be the central building block of a then faceless organization, an on the surface his talent level dictates that he should be that guy. New Kings management and coaches staff have all made it very clear to the public that DeMarcus is the one they believe will turn this franchise around but to date it seems as if they will be the last to realize that their faith is laughably misplaced in a player with arguably the worst character and leadership intangibles in the league. Misbehavior has been the theme of his career dating back far before he was drafted in 2010 which is why he fell to the 5th pick an simply put it's just not improving at all, even after he promised the fans coming into this year that he would be better an how he understood the ways of his past an how it effected his teammates Cousins went out an led the league in technical fouls for the second straight year thus making it the forth straight year he's placed in the top five in this category (which may or may not make him the only player in NBA history to achieve this feat in their first four years in the league).
Even with the addition of new minority owner Shaquille O'Neal to be a voice in the ear of Cousins off the court someone who could teach him how to be a leader of men as well as channel that aggression towards winning champions an the addition of on the court help in the form of a highly skilled wing player in Rudy Gay it just has not clicked. With averages of 22pts 11rebs and 3ast the production side of Cousins appears to be a positive opposed to his attitude an temper, but he also averaged a career high 3 turnovers per game this year an though there isn't a stat to quantify the effect these turnovers from a non ball handler has on the team it's pretty evident from the slumped shoulders an bowed heads that it's a profound one. The league leader in fouls per game this year Cousins hasn't really improved defensively much an most believe his ferocious demeanor towards teammates causes resentment but i'd argue it's caused them to tune him out completely, the opposite of love is not hate it's indifference an i think this whole team has just grown old with the childish act an as a leader that's the worse possible thing your troops can do is not care. So it's time for a change an i believe that a better late then never approach is very much necessary at this point an i know the fans an the city is so desperate to restore great basketball in this town but dating the pretty girl with all the internal flaws is not the way to do it you deserve better.
Ok, so here's the fix DeMarcus Cousins needs to be traded an this team needs a new face of the franchise guy but trading him won't be easy because rebuilding teams won't take him because they've seen that movie with him surrounded by young players before and championship teams won't risk that shake up of chemistry so it has to be someone right in the middle who is interested in Cousins for beyond just basketball reasons an that leads us to the Wizards and a young star who we saw blossoming in the playoffs this year Bradley Beal. Of course that's not enough return but a solid big man Marcin Gortat an a future pick should just about do it, this would reunited former Kentucky wildcats Wall and Cousins an give the Kings a new base and one that is trending up also someone who has a squeaky clean image which is well needed. Next step is making sure Rudy Gay returns to the team because two athletic wing players who can shoot defend an handle the ball have proven to be the blueprint for winning championships and playoff success if nothing else, an now for the point guard position Isaiah Thomas is a nice player big heart an all that good stuff but he's best suited to be your spark plug 6th man energy guy an with that said the Kings should be looking for a sure handed point guard who makes sound decisions an who makes others better an there's only one of those in this years draft Tyler Ennis. You might think the number eight pick is a little high for Ennis but nothing is a reach when it works an Ennis will work, that would wash the Kings hands totally clean of the Cousins era an the start a young core of a pure point guard who's be praised for his poise an smarts a sharp shooting two guard in Beal who on his way to becoming the best in the league at that position an a super athletic Rudy Gay who would really benefit from Ennis playmaking ability it would cause him to play off ball more often something he's been heavily criticized for not doing in his career. Thomas would be super excitement when he subbed into the games an Mclemore would have time to develop into that shooter off the bench to stretch the defense for Gortat who showed he isn't afraid of high pressure basketball when he got the best of the defensive player of the year Joakim Noah in Wizards first round victory. This doesn't make the Kings a championship contender an nothing will overnight but this will give a clear vision of the future an what it's supposed to look like when your building towards a championship. Kings have a new arena being built and it would be sad to watch DeMarcus Cousin tear it down with his attitude, smarten up Sacramento you deserve better.
